Styling my hair on and off I've found that a wax based pomade, cream or paste are the juggernauts of product. Almost any style can be achieved, maintained, and reworked with relative ease without the need of some crazy haircare regiment. Clean hair, a half decent brush, and slightly less product than you THINK you need and you can work wonders with your hair.

I use wax powder. I got into it as my barbers' used it once so I went and looked online. I comes in a container that looks a little bit like a salt/pepper pot and you shake the powder on to your hair and it congeals as wax, from where you style it. You can also shake it into your hand if you want to avoid getting some of it down your top or on your face (that's probably the only drawback) but I don't find that method as effective and it brushes/cleans off easily anyway. I like it because I've been going for the matte quiff kind of look for years, almost as if I don't have any product in, but have never really managed it successfully until now! I used to use something called Fish Paste putty but it was discontinued. The brand is still around but they don't seem to stock the particular type of product I liked anymore but that worked quite well too.

I prefer pomade - it has to have a stronger hold and be moisturizing. As I’ve gotten older, my skin is much drier than it used to be. So now my fine hair dries out if I use gel too much, which used to be my go-to styling aid. Not all pomades are created equal. Some are more like clays and those do NOT go well with my hair. Pomade is the only thing that acts like the gel I used to use, but without the drying effects of alcohol they put in gel.

I used many different oil based pomades for a few years with strong to extreme hold. It was a great experiece in the matters of hold and restyleability, but you must be aware. Some of those only wash out with the help of oil, or special shampoos, a few just don't wash out. I never found anything water based even close to their styling possibilities, but still got rid of them because of their inconvenience.

My barber suggest Gibbs beard oil for my beard one day. Decided to try their styling clay. Awesome scent. Awesome hold, but still soft enough I can put a little water on my hands and style it anyway I want mid day. Water will dissolve it immediately but I wash mine everyday because of what I do for a living. I use their body/hair wash as well. Gibbs is a Colorado company and 95% of their products smell amazing.

I find that combination of products works for me. A common problem is that people use to much product in their hair & it either gets to heavy & falls down or gets hard like a helmet. Using a dimes amount of gel & then touching up lose hairs with some flexible hold hairspray works for me. Of course if I'm going for a pompadour, since I have straight hair, I usually will use a volume increasing shampoo & then a polmade or fiber

Saltwater spray is great to get more texture in your hair, even sometimes enough for shorter hair or you normally just want a messy hairstyle without a sticky product. Personally I comb my hair with some let it dry naturally or use a blow-dryer if available then apply a product.
@Siberius-
@Siberius- 2 месяца назад
Sea salt spray is what I'm currently using, but I'm going to also try a paste. I like to wet the hair (down to the roots), and then towel pat it, and then spray a good amount of it in the hair, and rub it in with the fingers, and then blow dry the back forwards with a comb so as it's in check; blow dry the front backwards with a comb so as the fringe goes back properly. Then bend over upside down and dry the rest (much quicker, and doesn't over-dry parts of the hair, and gives more volume), mostly in the direction of backwards and to the side. Then when it's dry and in the right spot, I do like, 2 sprays from far enough away (don't weight it down with wetness) and don't touch it for a while. Currently my hair has gotten too long for it to hold where I like it, so I'll give myself a haircut soon. Usually it holds better. It does stay off the face a lot nicer than it does without it though, so it's better than nothing. I like sea salt spray in how it feels like there's pretty much nothing in the hair, it's just salt. You can also put your fingers in it, and it doesn't break the hold per se, it's just like, grit in there. The REAL winning combination though, is sea salt spray and chalk powder! chalk powder is incredible, that's where it's at. So much more hold. It's like getting in the ocean, drying off and then getting back in the ocean 50 more times. Although I suppose that is essentially what I do when climbing and fixing my hair a bunch of times. Adds up. Going to have to experiment with this lol. Edit: Wait... hair powder is a thing. Okay fuck the paste, I'm going to try hair powder! and sea salt spray works as a great pre-styler for that, so... this is all falling into place nicely. I like hair that you can run your fingers through, and feels like almost nothing, just more grippy on itself, and matte and dry, and like there's nothing in it. When you add a lot, you can't even get your fingers through the hair, so it's scalable and pretty cool. Also easy to get it into the hair, and hard to fuck up. Some hair products are like trying to disperse a strong glue throughout your hair. Sorry for all my typing, it's how I organise my thoughts. But maybe you could try the same if sea salt isn't quite enough hold for ya, particularly if your hair gets a bit longer. Oh wait you use a product after the sea salt... I see.
@nattvaktenphotography
@nattvaktenphotography 2 месяца назад
@@Siberius- Very informative. Yeah I use a product on top of sea salt sometimes when my hair is too long/thick or I want a stronger hold. But when it's newly cut and short I usually just need the sea salt. I mix my own spray too, using Cerulean seas salt.
@Siberius-
@Siberius- 2 месяца назад
@@nattvaktenphotography - Oh that's cool. I should look into that, because I wouldn't mind making a way saltier one. What's your method and measurements? Why do you use Cerulean Seas? I use "Toni & Guy Casual Sea Salt Texturising Spray 200ml" (haven't tried anything else). I'm going to buy "Slick Gorilla Hair Styling Powder 20g". Then after trying that I also want to try "Kevin Murphy Powder.Puff 14g", because it's apparently better to some degree, but mostly because it's really cute. Just more expensive.
@nattvaktenphotography
@nattvaktenphotography 2 месяца назад
@@Siberius- I simply add water and sea salt crystals into reusable pump spray bottles that used to hold something else before. I clean them out, add fresh water and just "go on the feel" on how much salt, to get a strong hold and gritty texture use a lot of salt, you notice when it doesn't dissolve as easily anymore, then it's salty! Well tbh I just happened to have them at home for cooking and I tried them they worked awesome. And it sounds fancy 😉😎 I used to buy premade salt spray from the hairdresser but they took like $10-20 a bottle! And it's really just water, sea salt and some coloring in some to make it look blue. I figured making my own was better. I've never tried hair powder, I use wax, gel, pomades, and paste. I like pomades quite a bit even if it's s bit greasy.
@Siberius-
@Siberius- 2 месяца назад
@@nattvaktenphotography - Oh so you just make the water as salty as you possibly can within reason lol. Only stop when it won't properly let you continue. That sounds pretty salty. Good thing salt isn't too expensive. Cerulean does sound fancy, yes. Also reminds me of Pokémon. My sea salt spray isssss water... salt (makes sense), 2 moisturising ingredients, a preservative, an ingredient that creates a film on the hair to provide some shine, detangling, and de-frizzing (sounds protective), then mostly fragrances. HMMMMM... yea nah, you've inspired me to create my own sea salt spray! as a pre-styler before powder. I think I remember people adding a bit of certain oils or something to their concoctions, but my hair is short enough that my own natural oils can easily do the job. Just like how people with straight, regular thickness, non-ponytail-length hair don't need conditioner under normal conditions with regular reasonable weather. Actually no, seems 1 table spoon per cup of water is the baseline, so I'll try that and then probably step it up. Then yea a bit of argon oil or some shit seems to be ideal lol. If I must. I should get jojoba oil, because it's good for the nails. 👌

I think there are also two types of straight hair. 1a) Thin: What you expected. The most common for a lot of people. 2b) Hard: Common for Asian people. Best way to explain this is that if you cut your hair short, it’ll start to stand up and you look like a porcupine. I have this problem. Clay/wax tends to work to flatten the hair on your scalp, but it never last for a whole day, so ultimately people like me have to deal hair that sticks out like needles.

Pomade is the way to go fella's.. use probably three fingers of it and rub it in hair. Last all day and holds good and can keep styling it..

I have a question and was hoping someone could help me out. First off I have loved using gels in the past, but my real question is what hair products can I use to style my hair that aren't going to reck my hair if I have them in every day? I do shower every day at night so it all does come out. But also I was wondering if almost every product is ok in your hair depending on what brand you buy? Like I know when I was using gels only once in a while did I ever use a better brand like crew. But other wise for the most part it was what ever was cheapest from walmart with a steong hold. Oh and sorry I do have to rule out wax I have tried it before and I have such a tough time taking it out and putting it in I ruled it out. Thank you for any one who might be able to help me out with this problem.

How to get a wet hair look?

Never been a fan of the barber shop to much to maintain and have to keep going back every week to keep it in shape. When I had hair I did the slickback look, water or gel is all you need, but I tinkered with the style for over 20 years and found out that using oil puts a nice weight/volume to hair, what oil you might ask, Coconut oil works good and if you mix it write to wet hair you dont need much and it saves a ton of money on products.

Yo , anyone know if there is any scent free clay or wax? When I use wax it leaves a strange smell that lasts all the day and I would like to use wax or clay without having that smell throughout the day.

Head and Shoulders makes a clay that has a very light smell. You can smell it when you put it on, but I never smell it throughout the day the way I do when using a cream.

I’m trying to go for a natural slicked back hair style. I’m thinking Obi-wan Kenobi in attack of the clones or Christian Bale from the batman movies. Does anyone have any product suggestions?

Scent and quality of product are two attributes I value too. Not going to buy a product that smells bad. You can tell the difference between cheap and quality products. Cheap textured paste feels like cement.
