There's an out of bounds/ inaccessible piranha plant in Paper Mario: The Origami King that leads to a very interesting and slightly glitchy battle. If you start a fight against this piranha plant, you fight against 4 toads in an arena with a blue background and 5 rings. We explore this battle and glitches associated with it in this video!

In this video, we test out Olivia's hints, items, and some battle mechanics to see if this fight is glitched. As for why we get this specific fight if we run into the piranha plant, something similar happens in the original Paper Mario game, as seen in the clip at 1:40 - in the original Paper Mario game, "800DC4EA" is the address for battle ID, and some of these unreachable enemies default to a certain battle ID that corresponds with fighting a regular goomba. the reason why there toads named (goombas) is because goomba is the default/placeholder name and toad model is the default/placeholder models

I remember that something similar happens in the original Paper Mario also, where there's a default name for enemies, and in some battles there are enemies that aren't named correctly! I think it might be tutorial battle with Eldstar? I think he might be named Goombario if you edit the game's battle ID to face him if I remember correctly Thank you for the comment :D

@@ZXMany it's not a placeholder, the 5th ring mirrors the first ring, and is used to make the shift animation smoother Edit: note how when you shift a lane it's segment moves foward with the rest of the rings and then a new one appears

Yes! Looking at the geometry of all the other battle areas, the game has geometry covering where the “5th ring” normally is. I believe the 5th ring is present in every battle in the game as a part of animating the ring moves.

@@michaelbecker7288 Yeah, that fits with all of the other battles that I've seen! That fifth ring seems to be covered in all of the battles by other textures/ backgrounds that are above it, so the fifth circle remains hidden for every fight

This is hilarious! The fight seems like some weird, interdimensional parallel universe where everything is just not quite right. Almost like something right out of a dream. Also, it's interesting that the Piranha Plant disappears if you defeat it before the Chain Chomp eats it. I didn't expect the cutscene to use the actual model of that Piranha Plant, I assumed it was rendered as its own separate thing. Keep up the good work!

Agree is just so many strange things happen in this battle like there are 5 rings, toads are enemy, they shrink when they are attacking, using the fire flower just goes to enemies turn, it plays red streamer sound track battle, using the POW block dosen't hit the toads it seems like toads are like flying and got enemies strike on you first or jumping the enemies with spike on it, it just damage the toads instead of Mario got damage.

I think the five rings are actually normal, and they are just covered in normal battles. I think they are used for the animation when sliding the rings instead if rotating them. They are used so that the rings don't visibly disappear. The visible ring moves to the hidden rings location and the hidden one disapeares instead of the visible one disappearing.

7:00 the reason why it happens is because you actually knocked off the sticker, then you damaged it a few times before killing it. The sticker is present on all paper macho enemies, but it's invisible on the chain chomp because you aren't supposed to get close enough to knock it off with out being torn to shreds!!! That is also the reason why the chain chomp doesn't scatter confetti when you damage it or have animations for knocking off the sticker, taking damage, or dying, The game never expected you to get behind the chain chomp!!!! (I'm not 100% sure about this but that's what seems most likely)

Sometimes I make my HP values 420, or very low, or other random values because I've been testing stuff on other save files! I usually keep my HP/ coins at whatever they are in the save file I'm using is unless there's some reason to change it

I'm honestly surprised that the Piranha Plant isn't a normal battle. Maybe that's a specific battle for the developers to test how it would work, and figured they'd just assign this battle to the Piranha Plant since it's normally unreachable. Anyway, Nice video as always!

Thanks so much! My guess is that the same thing happens in this game as the original Paper Mario: every enemy is given a battle ID, and since this piranha plant is an enemy (it shoots out fire balls at you), it has to have a battle ID! Instead of creating a brand new battle with a unique lineup/ puzzles for an unreachable enemy, they just used the default battle ID that leads to the test battle, and that shouldn't matter because the enemy is unreachable I appreciate the comment and the support, have a great day! :D

I think you actually defeated it but it had no confetti to scatter and no animations when you damaged it or knocked off the invisible sticker because you weren't supposed to get behind it in the 1st place.

My guess: The fifth ring exists in the normal game but is covered up, and is used so that there is an extra grid available, so that pushes/pulls don't look weird.

I don't have that good programming experience, but with my small experience and knowledge that I have, I think that the toads are placeholders, and the fifth ring is for viewing purposes because you can see that the fourth one becomes the fifth without having an animation. Edit : I think the fight had to stay because of the game's engine, so they put the fight somewere you *shouldn't* be able to get to it.

I noticed that if you slow down the video to the slowest speed when mario uses the fire flower ( almost at the end of the video ) it says for about a half of a second shiny mushroom instead of fire flower or shiny fire flower

I think the 5th ring is there for when you slide the board vertically to create the effect where the tiles come back from the other side and that the 5th ring is present in every battle but is usually covered up

What a curious situation! I wished I could fight it during my play through of the game, I figured that it would be similar to the out of bounds fights in 64 like you showed off, definitely very bizarre. Also, since it doesn’t crash after fighting the piranha plant, how does this affect progression in the Musée Champignon enemy display? It isn’t normally factored in, so does anything change? Can it count towards the trophy?

I was thinking maybe it uses toads as an original tutorial battle idea but then with bolivia said your friends are here to help, it sounds like she means the toads, probably after you used coins to call them out, some coming on the field, and if you line them up or place them near enemies, they help in some way also maybe there could have been a harder mode unlocked post game where there is 5 rings making lining up and causing damage much harder and allowing for more combinations and moves

Basically the unreachable piranha plant is not supposed to be battled so when you manage to interact with the piranha plant they must have just made a default battle that was not really thought out since it wasn’t meant to be battled

I tried this! Fighting my club was funny lol. I also noticed a folded soldier chain chomp when going out of bounds. Probably an unused fight for the chain chomp chase I’m guessing. It’s in the origami castle out of bounds. Same with a weird platform and Bobby flying out of bounds of the area he died in. Pretty weird

Hey, I’m coming from the Origami King glitch hunting discord. I’m assuming you used similar value editing tools to ZXMany. I was curious on how you managed to find the out of bounds origami chain chomp? We’ve been trying to figure out how to manipulate the camera using value editing tools, so if you did something like that and know what values to target, please let me know!

@@zaku28 I don’t exactly remember. It’s been 4 months since I did this. My best suggestion is trying the mod “Noclip And Exploits” which lets you noclip into areas

@@zaku28 it will take you a minute (or 2. Probably 12) to find it. But is very very very very hidden in some corner of the void. I actually went to explore the void again today and see if I could fight it It brought me to a fight with king Olly. But when I beat king Olly it took me to handaconda. And it would keep taking me to bosses until I reached the end. It then took me out of the Boss Vr Thing in battle lab. Going to guess it was a possible boss rush mode for the boss vr

I’m pretty sure that the five rings are always present and the fifth ring is there for when you scroll the tiles up so you don’t see nothing

Yeah, exactly! I'm thinking the fifth ring is there in every battle, but there are visuals that cover it up so we can't see it there

So far there's no way, but if we ever discover something like Thudley jumps in Super Paper Mario, or jump storage in TTYD, or Kooper super jumps in the original Paper Mario, then maybe it could be possible! Right now we have to edit Mario's vertical position or use a moon jump

I've played around 65 hours with it and it exceeded my expectations by a lot. In my opinion it is a much better game than what the internet discussion suggests about it. Even most of the reviews are "it is a fantastic game but it is not RPG and the combat does not give XP, 7/10", which is really strange to me, like most people cannot simply measure this game on its own but looking at how it differs from a 16 years old game. It is mainly an adventure, puzzle, collectathon game with beautiful graphics and music, clever and funny writing, charming story and characters and tons of unique ideas. I personally loved the logic puzzle aspect of the combat (especially the bosses) and never got boring or frustrating to me but I can understand if someone feels different about it because it is really unusual and definitely not for everyone. I am honestly sad that this game gets so much hate on the internet and there isn't really any discussion about it on r/papermario, only memes, because according to my experience with it it definitely does not deserve that. Not the best game of all time of course, but definitely something that adds much value to the Switch library and it's easily worth its price.

Hey there! Different languages were used for different parts of the game, and even the number of languages used wasn't consistent! There are 109 languages currently on Google translate, and most of the time I used between 10-20 different languages If we do English -> Random language -> Random language -> English, there are over 11,000 possibilities, so we can see how quickly these possibilities go up as the number of languages increases 😂 Hope you have a great day!

I belive that the first hint that Olivias gives you in the battle is the same hint she gives you when you fight a enemy on the bowser castle with Bowser minions spread through all the rings, and also if you enter other unreachable fight, would it still be the same fight as the piranha plant? Maybe you should test it out

Huh that is interesting, maybe that has to do with the Toads being paper rather than origami, with the Bowser's Castle battles being the only other instances of that outside special modes?

No, I don't think it has to do with toads being paper since they are treath like Origami Goombas and you can actually damage them, you can jump and hammer Bowser Minions but they don't take any damage it seems

I think if we coud keep this Battle System in the next Paper Mario, we coude make more Rings to make it more hard. Z.B. The Ice Vellumantal with 7 Rings and Ice Mace!
