Here are 5 secrets in the code of Paper Mario: The Origami King, including hidden exp in the battle system, strange things in gameplay, secrets about Bobby/ Olivia, hidden partners, Zelda references in the game's code, how certain things in the game work, and more! Let me walk you through what I've found :)

I've been digging through Paper Mario: The Origami King's files/ code, exploring all of the bosses, strange things that happen with Bobby the Bob-omb, the hidden Sombrero Guy partner, and experimenting with editing the game's save data, and here are some interesting findings/ secrets from the game's code!
You may have heard there's a hidden battle exp system in Paper Mario: The Origami King, or that exp points might have been originally planned in the game. Well, there's also Fishing Experience that is kept track of in your game's save file! You get experience when you catch more fish. And with some testing, I've found that the Legendary Cheep Cheep and Legendary Blooper appeared immediately once I increased my fishing experience by hacking the game. The same thing happened at Shogun Studios with the Lord of Shogun Studios Cheep Cheep, and at Overlook Mountain, with the King of Overlook Mountain Cheep Cheep!
There are a few Zelda references in the game's code/ save files as well: there are parts where Olivia is referred to as "navi," the little fairy that follows Link and gives hints in the Legend of Zelda games, similar to what Olivia does. There are also references to the Deku tree from Zelda.
We also take a look at how running away from battles (escape rate) works, if you can run away from every boss in Paper Mario: The Origami King, character models, how characters like Bobby work compared to other followers (Professor Toad, Kamek, etc), and some partners don't appear in battles (Sombrero Guy, Luigi, unfolded Bowser).

About Olivia’s hints that the game tracks: The very first time you use olivia’s hint, she’ll say this is my first hint! Thing is this can happen at any point in the game as long it’s your first time asking her for a hint. So that feature probably retrieves it’s data from that counter.

That's a really good point! There are a few things in the game like this where it keeps track of if it's the first time you've done something Normally, once you leave the Earth Vellumental temple after completing it, Olivia will suggest that you try jumping on the goombas to take them out in a single hit. But if you already have 70 HP (by hacking) when you enter Picnic Road for the first time, Olivia will give you this suggestion right away! For some of these values, booleans are used, so I'm surprised that sometimes integers are used for these other values - it makes me think that the value might be also used in some other way, but who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Other thing to note: If you talk to Olivia on Diamond Island after you beat it, she will say "Mario, you have a lot of Power, Courage and Wisdom! But I guess that's a secret to nobody.". That being a reference to the iconic line from the Legend of Zelda series "It's a secret to everybody".

One of the sombrero guy companion's sprites looked like he was tripping, sorta similar to bobby's miss animation. maybe they wanted him to be an attacker but they didn't program it fully before it was scrapped? also i think the battle exp would work like you would get an ammount based on the enemies, if the puzzle is completed and if it was a wave battle. i doubt the no damage bonus would function the same for coins. maybe there could have been bonuses exclusive to the exp?

That's really interesting! I've looked through the sprites for the sombrero guy, and he has some that aren't used (other characters also have unused sprites). Sombrero Guy has a throwing his hat animation if I remember correctly, and I don't think he does that anywhere in the game normally

Things must seem pretty strange to Bobby though: we're in this cold, icy cave, we're with Olivia, and suddenly, she disappears. I don't know why his first thought is to go to a cruise ship, but hey, I'd be confused in that situation too!

@@fattytan1377 They did, Ceave did some investigation and found (though not confirmed) that Nintendo has banned progression and reward systems, which is why you never get any more abilities after the tutorial in recent Nintendo games, and why Super Mario Odyssey has 380 more moons than are needed to unlock the Darker Side and the potential to get as many as you want. It's also probably the reason why only one sidequest in Breath of the Wild outside Kakariko Village and Gerudo Town gives any tangible reward beyond vendor trash (the one that allows you to get diamonds easier)

Zelda fan here! Did you also notice some musical similarities in this game to the Zelda games? Like the Diamond Island theme having a part that sounds like Fi's theme, the first Sweetpaper Valley theme sounding like Hidden Village, etc.

There's also a Zelda refrence when Olivia picks up Luigi's hat and she says *He's met with a bad fate*. That's refrencing the Happy Mask Salesman quote from Majora's Mask. Which is "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw it pop up! How easy a part of the game becomes depends on what part of the game it is: some things will only become easier once, other things gradually become easier (like the tiles that light up when you enter the Fire Vellumental temple, they'll start to glow for longer, and then they eventually don't turn off)

Okay, so in tanabe's paper mario trilogy the player actually gets stronger the more hearts upgrades that you get? I knew there was a reason why the weaker enemy went down before we even went to battle. So props to him for that kind of process. But now I'm wondering why he could do that in a paper mario RPG. It's not impossible to do so right?

Hmm, I know in the original Paper Mario, there's a badge that lets Mario defeat weaker enemies without entering a battle It's also interesting that there might be a limit in The Origami King on which enemies you can defeat without entering a battle: I tried first-striking some of the enemies at the end of the game, and even with 999 HP, I still entered battles

The "exp" in the files could either be something they thought of at first but then scrapped the idea for whatever reason, maybe restricted by some higher ups. Or it could've been a last minute addition (possibly in response to AlphaDream going bankrupt, meaning no more Mario RPG games) but they didn't have enough time to implement it. If the latter is true, I wonder if they would've had enough time if this whole situation didn't exist...

You are amazing. My son and I have followed almost every paper Mario The Oragmi King video related to editing and fun ;) on Yuzu and have enjoyed every second. I spent two days saving in front of where Mario becomes Star Paper Mario for about 15-30 seconds and I could not for the life of me find something consistent in the save file during those moments to activate that sprite/power in the overworld at all times :(. I'm not sure if this is not possible or just a lack of my eyes and attempts. Always something I have been curious about.. Just stopping by again to say that you're one of the only channels I'm comfortable letting my son watch on RU-vid by himeself and I send good vibes your way. I also love your content! Best, -Alec

Maybe Bobby was the first partner developed, and there’s some old unused code triggering from an older partner system they worked on. Then they redid the partner system to make it dynamic and easier to convert any NPC into a partner, but remnants of the old system remain

That's a really great idea, I'll test that out! I was testing out if we can skip to Olly right from the start of the game, and I was surprised to see that the vellumentals you need in the fight still work!

I'll have to do some experimenting with it, I know it's one that can really frustrate speedrunners! I've heard people say you can tell what you should do by looking at the hand, but I wonder if there's anything else useful that we can extract for speedrunners

That's an amazing idea that I can imagine would be really hilarious! I'll test it for sure! I think this will happen: the game will likely crash because the game will try to load Bobby's dialogue, but Bobby isn't present as a partner. That's usually what happens if the game tries to load dialogue from a partner that you don't have with you

I hate to burst the Zelda reference but ‘navi’ is actually not a Zelda reference. A bunch of Nintendo games tend to use ‘navi’ as an internal name for guidance related things (Pikmin and Pikmin 2 come to mind), as its technically not unique to Zelda, but rather just short for Navigation or Navigator.

Yeah, that's right! Do you think that's where the origin of Navi's name in the Zelda games comes from? It would make sense if Navi has traditionally been used in games because it's short for "navigator," but what's more interesting is if this is where Navi's name comes from in the Zelda games!

I wonder why they would put the extra effort in to make bobby that complicated. Isnt the goal of efficient coding to make everything kind of consistent? There is no reason for bobby to not just work like every other partner

I haven't looked into the scripting yet, so I can't be 100% certain, but I have a few speculations: I actually just wrote up a long explanation of why I think this is happening, but then I tried something different and now Bobby works 😂 I have to do some more testing with this. I was thinking at first that it's because Bobby is scripted to be a partner in some parts of the game but not others, but it's because there are different folders for Bobby (mostly Bobby sprites, regular Bob-ombs with some Bobby sprites, and Bobby's ghost have 3 different names)

Is there a particular reason you often recite the whole name of the game (or at least say "in the Origami King") when gameplay of OKing is being shown anyway and the title of the video says what it is anyway?

That's a really great question, and yes, there are a few reasons for it! I'm guessing the auto-generated CC might play a role in SEO, and if that's true, then that's a huge reason to do it from a content creator's perspective, and there are other reasons for doing it in the video itself :) Hope you enjoyed the video, have a great day! :D
