@@VCGConstruction Yeah, you see all kinds of crazy shit go on, on the jobsite and in the shop...we once paid a guy something like $12 to eat a 6 month old piece of Little Caesars pepperoni pizza (refrigerated most of that 6 months), and he ate an order of fried shrimp we left sitting on a toilet seat box in the shop for 1 month...I think he got around $30 for that one, because he had the month to negotiate, lol. So yeah...you never know if someone might chomp that gum up. Besides, if they're dumb enough to eat something off the shop/jobsite floor, they deserve the consequences, lol.

Great hack, I have one of my own that you should try. When using hole saws in heavy steel or stainless steel wrap the holes on the sides of the hole saw with electric tape then fill the hole saw with pellet ice or crushed ice. Drill at a medium speed with moderate pressure. The ice will keep the hole saw and the material cold (important with stainless steel since it will get hard if it heats up), the melting ice provides plenty of lubrication as well as helping to flush the chips out. Also cleanup is easy compared to using oil (I work in lots of restaurant kitchens where they can’t have lubricating oil residue). This will greatly extend the life of your hole saws as well as cutting a “cleaner” hole. I’ve been using this method for more than 10 years not only drilling stainless steel but also 3/16” to 3/8” steel and occasionally 1/2” steel. To keep the hole saws and arbor from rusting just spray it with WD-40 after you are done.

Im in the metal building business and all you deal with is 5/16 or 3/8 Nut drivers when fastening walls or roofs. And with every metal building theirs butyl tape aka mastic. Its what you use on your roof sheet laps in order to waterproof. It comes in rolls so just cut a piece of roll. Roll it up in a ball and press your nut driver into and clean. Same principle. Also if you're in a jam just use a fasteners your using stick it inside the nut driver on angle and run your tool in forward and reverse upside down so shrapnel doesn't come flying at your eyes

I have been using the reversible Malco driver bits for two or three years . Before that I still would only use Malco driver bits. And in the world of HVAC the magnet does get quite dirty quite often. Chewing gum to clean it I used Silly putty. Silly Putty might sound silly but it will clean your driver bit magnet and it will clean your hands and it will clean your other tools as well. If for any reason I didn't have used up ,lost ,or stolen, I would just clean it out with pressure. An air compressor, or my drain gun, or my oxygen tank from my oxy acetylene torch, my nitrogen tank that was used for clearing out line sets and pressure tests, I'm not going to actually say that I would clean the magnet off with freon sometimes, because y'all weren't there, you didn't see me do it, so you can't prove nothing. But mainly it was the silly putty.

In our industry, sheet metal workers. We usually use mac-tac HVAC sealant. We grab a bit of the roll and stick it to our toolboxes or cart and use that to clean the inside of the driver. But when the driver is no good we just throw them away and get a new one. But I am definitely looking at the removable malco brand driver as my replacement.

Now that’s an awesome tip! Definitely looks like it works better (and cheaper) than the detailing clay from the local auto parts store. Lol, it never occurred to me as I don’t chew gum but I do happen to keep it stocked along side the mason jar of spearmint life savers on the shelf over my bench for my ‘assistants’. Funnier still, it is Trident as that’s what they prefer. I’ll have to tell the boys they’ve increased in value yet again 🤣 I was unaware of the double sided sockets let alone the sockets in the Makita gold kits. Great information as usual. Thanks to Joe Shearer (sorry if misspelled) for the hack tip and Vince for resharing it here. Love learning something new every day. Stay safe.

Awesome hack! Everyone may not have this available to them on the job but being an ironworker and usually sheeting when im using the nut drivers, we have mastic (caulking tape) available to us. Thats what I use on the job. It does stick probably alot worse than your gum hack but ive never had any problem with it actually sticking inside the bit and having to dig it out. Just another hack if you forgot your chewing gum or dont chew gum and have the mastic available to you.

Already knew about the Malco so I've had no need since for the gum trick. I've been carrying the Malco for over a year now. All I have to do to clean it is pop it off the shank and pinch the shavings off the end of the shank. Only broke one but it was extremely abused and had sunk 1,000s of screws (many into concrete, about as abusive as you can be to a nut driver). Even then, all that broke was half of the magnet chipped off. So now that's my back up bit because I'd rather have a nut driver with half a magnet than no magnet at all and worse yet, no nut driver at all. And as soon as I get rid of my spare I'll lose my main one of course so I guess it's cheap insurance.
