Sadly you don’t learn swimming by watching youtube videos. I know it sounds obvious but very often we watch youtube videos of things we wish we did. For me, those are amazing GoPro videos, for you, it might be this channel or another. We even feel a little accomplished when we watch someone do what they are good at because that’s how our brain works. So at the end of a cool surfing video, for example, I might not feel exactly how the surfer felt but I do feel excited and almost feel like I know how to surf better. But I’ve only been surfing once and I doubt that I’ve gotten better just by watching a video. In fact, there are so many hours of practice and little details that I don’t see that make me feel that surfing is easier than it really is.
To be fair, I might be intellectually learning new tips on what to focus next time when I practice, but especially in something physical like swimming or surfing, if we don’t work out our other type of intelligence, the kinesthetic intelligence, we will not improve.
All of this to say that I wish you are not just watching our videos, but that you are actually inspired to practice what we share.
We have been doing swimming videos on youtube for three years and we read almost all the comments but I am sure that most of you have not given us any feedback. So please, this time let us know if our videos have helped you swim better or if you feel more motivated to go swimming. I look forward to reading your comments!

I’m trying to build my endurance to swim 500 meters and then a mile. Some more videos on building endurance for beginners would really be appreciated. How to breath when resting between laps. How to swim to conserve energy. How to do flips in shallow pool. How often should you practice in a week. Would really be helpful to me
@SkillsNT
@SkillsNT 5 лет назад
I wish I could tell you to breathe deep and calm between laps but I honestly can’t unless I am doing a sort of breath control set. To swim and conserve energy you need to improve your technique in every way. Specially the horizontal position of your body. To do flips in shallow pools you need to brings your knees to your chest as much as possible. It depends on your goals, but as often as you can. The best swimmers swim between 20 to 30 hours in a week.

Wilson, I am actually doing this as a warm up; 500 non stop every time. It was more of a mental thing really because I used to only warm up at 100-200. I told myself: "This is the standard, 500 non stop, if you cannot do it, get out of the pool, no one will ever know." Conquer the mind. My goal is a constant 1650 and my longest has been 2000 non stop several times.

@@SkillsNT Hello, your videos are awesome. I have a problem. I move very slowly when I do a dolphin kick and I have been swimming for five years, but I still cant do my dolphin kick corectly. My coutch says that I'm doing my dolphin kicks from knees. I need my dolphin kick for better results. Maybe you can give me some advices. Can it be that i will never be able to do a dolphin kicks because its not for my body or that is not true, bacause every swimmer can do it? For 25 meters I need about 24 - 25 seconds to do with my dolphin kicks. So that is really slow. I would be very happy if you would say me what is the problem and how can I solve It. Maybe its because of my ankle, because it is really unflexible? Thank you.

I discovered your channel almost six months ago, but since then I've "fallen in love" looking at your sinuous and hypnotic strokes in water: this encouraged me to re-start swimming twice a week and I am trying to put in practice your drills, although I often feel clumsy and I would need someone providing personal hints. Your weekly videos are spurring me to try re-learning swimming backstroke: it is a stroke I quitted swimming after learning freestyle, many years ago. I have still a lot to practice before doing it decently, but I am resolute to improve it: it is one of my goals for the next season. This year I have improved my freestyle endurance a lot: 1.5 hour almost no-stop. I am trying to improve my stroke-per-length count: every time I enter in the pool I feel it will succeed, soon! Thanks a lot for inspiring!

I watched the videos in slower speed and observe the different body position and movement to learn.

I have health issues and was unable to swim farther than 25m without feeling like I may pass out from shortness of breath. I was determined to improve my health, so I signed up for swim lessons. Overtime I was able to swim a bit further but my technique was bad. I started watching your videos and practicing what you suggested 3x a week - religiously. It’s been 15 months and I can now swim 1500m in an hour and I’m still improving and gaining strength and endurance. I’ve lost 20lbs and have improved health. Thank you for sharing your expertise. yeah your videos really are inspiring! what I like about them is that you deliver your ideas in a casual, accessible way. What I don’t quite like (and that’s my problem, and mine alone :D) is the slogan “Swim fast!”. Dunno why, it just doesn’t feel right... to me anyway 😬 Otherwise great channel, I’ve been doing swimming for about half a year now, and have mastered my freestyle only recently. Thanks to your videos, esp. the ones with workouts and stretches, they really boosted my own warm-up and stretching routines. So keep it up folks! Looking forward to further content

I am the leader of swimming in Korea. Korea has a high swimming population but still tends to teach swimming in an unscientific way. So I study and research and try to teach comfortable swimming, efficient swimming. Your videos are helping me to make an ideal swim. Ideal swimming I think is logic, training, and proof. I would appreciate your steady upload. I do not speak English, so I make comments with translator. I do not know if the translation worked well.

I used to be fit, but lost 12 years to significant injuries and ill health. I wont bore you with the details. Coming out the other side after 2 open heart ops., I felt I had to get into swimming (cleared through my cardiologists) to gain control of my heart. Your videos have helped me do that in many ways. Every time I get in the pool, it is exciting, interesting and challenging. And to improve, I have changed my dry land exercises and stretching. Your videos have been and continue to be a significant part of my recovery. My goal was to get back to sub 1:00 100M long course. Yes I'm delusional, 40 years places my body in a very different place. Where did the strength go? Don't talk to me about swimming endurance. Does anyone else get the chills when pushing yourself in the pool? Thank you again for the inspirational help.

I figured out your channel 8 month ago and I was amazed. I appreciate the hard working and enthusiastic job you're done in each videos by watching all your videos, contribute Vietnamese subtitle for some videos (now I am busy or lazy 😖, sorry about that). If you could do more about common fault in swimming (freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and especially butterfly), I would appreciate. And more butterfly drills too, hihi😊😊😊. One more thing... I watch your video before go to swim to make sure I am training in a good way.

Hi, first of all i want to thank you for all of your videos that you have shared with us and say that you are doing amazing job and if you ever feel like giving up, please dont forget why you have started. For me it was at a start of collage 3 years back when I was 20 years old with 115 Kg weigh with absolutely no idea of swiming and only PE lesson that i had time during semester was for swimming. At start I couldnt even swim 100 meters . As a time past i developed a habit that becomes a passion and feels like a drug to me. Now i swim 6 times a week (50min practise+/-) and i couldnt feel better about my self. I want you to know that you have made a better man of me and with your help i could become a someone else than i have been long time ago. I want you to know that behind every 6:00 AM morning practise that move me forward and sometimes drive me crazy, you have played a major part and i want you thank for it. Now i am 23 years old and regurely swim around 2km breast /free and i have managed to lower my weight with to 74kg. Once again thank you for inspiring me and giving me a passion and opening a new way of possibilties for me. Without you as my personal coach i couldnt achieve good technique, endurance and love for chlorine. Swim fast! :)

My main problem is the try to focus on a limited number of changes and try to see if those do improve my endurance and/or speed. I liked swimming when I was young but I didn't have the chance to practice it by chance at the age of forty I started to learn swimming but as an adult coaches don't focus with you I took level one with a coach and started to ptactice with you everything breathing, strokes, kicks, body positions , posture in all swimming types freestyle , back swimming breast and butterfly everytime I had the chance to stay at the pool I stay I learned swimming by my self of course with your great help now I am learning my child how to swim and with all proud and happiness I am a lifeguard now at the age of 45 . I thank you again and I consist that you're doing a great job so keep up and I am sure that I'm not the only one who gets the benefits from your vlogs your techniques video were the most important made me learn fast I was writing your workouts on papers and take them with me to the pool I still do that till now and train it was very hard at the beginning but it changed my swimming alot . Your videos are very informative and I'm really glad that you organized some of them sequentially in a playlist in order of most basic and fundamental to more complex skills. Even though I've been swimming since I was a kid through the typical swim lessons offered in my city and have swam in a Masters club for a couple years, I haven't reached the competitive level I want to compete at and your videos along with other successful swim channels on youtube are gradually helping me get there. I just wish I wasn't held back by my annoying shoulder injury but at least it's just impingement and a partial tear and nothing severe. Despite not being able to swim yet, or at least I haven't yet because I am being cautious with my injury, I'm still doing a lot of stroke technique research on youtube and am still passionate about the sport. So to conclude, thank you for helping me keep motivated with your guys' impressive skill and talent for the sport!

I have been watching your videos for a year or so, can't remember. I have maybe 3 others that I like. You do a good job of explaining, and have a funny sense of humor. From my days of taking Wing Chung, and Tai Chi: "Teacher, am I doing this right?" "10,000 more times." But Teacher, that is what you said last time." "Well then, 10,000 more times." Sadly for me, no one else swims the over arm side stroke any where near like I do (I will do a video on it eventually...) so I can't observe some one else swimming it, but I can watch others swim and adapt to what I am doing. Getting back into freestyle again. Maybe a video on linking the hip and shoulder rotation in freestyle. Lots of videos on the necessity of hip and shoulder rotation, but not how they link together to get you moving efficiently through the water.

In the last couple of years, I’ve learnt to swim all five strokes (altho’ my backstroke, fly & sidestroke need a lot more work) purely from RU-vid videos including your own, and have gradually got faster using all the tips from here & similar programmes. I don’t go swimming v.often and do zero cross training, but have nevertheless graduated from nearly drowning to the slow lane to middle lane to fast lane of my local pool, predicated on swim tips. I am yet to start learning the Trudgeon stroke, as I wanted to try to perfect my crawl first.

Everyday I check the youtube menu on the left looking for a blue dot on your channel to check if there is something new to see... On youtube there are plenty of swimming related channels, but most of them are dedicated to front crawl (in the anglo-saxon world called freestyle, why? :D ), but you guys are trying to cover all the main 4 swimming techniques and I must admit you are doing it pretty well. Nice videos and a lot of useful materials (strength training and anatomy related videos are great) and tips for improving our swim techniques. Keep the nice work. Thanks and greetings from Croatia!

Of course ! Your videos have helped me immensely. (Please don't say that you are going to stop making videos or I will cry.:() I started learning to swim 3 months ago. I haven't been taking any group classes or anything. I get private lessons from a swim coach albeit not too often. Thus far, I have only had 9 one-hour sessions. I know how to do the breast stroke, freestyle, turbo kick, dolphin kick, and back stroke. I started swimming in the deep end a month ago. In my opinion, I have learned fast. I could never have magined myself as a confident swimmer and having these skills several months ago. I feel so free in the water. It has changed my life completely.I watched a lot of your videos many times because I needed technical swimming instructions and modeling of the strokes and kicks. Your videos were like having a friendly swimming buddy (since it can be lonely learning to swim by oneself every day), giving easy to understand instructions (your voice is calm, kind,and you speak slowly), creating a friendly atmosphere, and motivating me. At the end of the video, I always wait for you to say: SWIM FAST. I hope you continue to make more videos. This video here is what I really needed. Much success for your channel. Swim Fast!

One of the freestyle vids made me swim so much faster I almost couldn’t handle it 🤣 trying to slow down and focus on form and breath. Just saw the 5 tips for free styling and definitely planning to apply them during my next visit to the pool at my gym.

I am a 29yr old black South African female who steered clear from the water mainly because 'duh black people don't swim' and 'duh I can't get water in my hair'. After being a 'Google swimmer' for over 3 years I decided to take the plunge, let go of my deeply ingrained stereotypes and fears and got a swim coach. It's been 8 weeks now and the only thing I can say to you is I've gone from not being able to even float in water to learning to swim freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke in 8 weeks - my coach says I'm a ''natural swimmer" and I say bulls**t. Your swimming tutorials and workouts have me looking like a boss in the pool AND I've saved a lot of money I would have spent on lessons and more coaches. Now I just have to keep getting in that pool, watching your videos and perfecting my technique. I'll try the butterfly stroke thereafter. Your passion has made me more comfortable in the water and willing to learn. Keep up the excellent work..! Love & support all the way from South Africa. :-)

I think the best time to do foam rolling is when you feel that your muscles are tight or when you have been sitting for a long time. That’s when I use it anyways

Hi, I do watch your videos, currently most of the video's are beyond my skill level. When I was 8 I was playing at the beach and my mom walked me out in the water and this scared me so I ran back to shore, but what I did not know was some one dug a deep hole in the sand when the tide was out and now the water covered it and I feel in. By the time I could stand back up gasping for air and trying to make my way to shore it scared me real bad. That was the beginning of being terrified of water. I stayed that way for 50 years. Last fall I got a private instructor to help get over this fear. I still struggle with jumping into water, from a standing position. I jump in like a pencil , sometimes, I remember to breath out my nose and when I do that bring back the fear of that day. Doing a vertical bob also bring the fear on. I keep trying even when I feel bad...... Can you do some video's on how to jump into the water with out going down so far along with the vertical bob. Lots of details and tip and trick would be nice. I am working on learning the front crawl. But I still need lots of good advise as I have no base line to draw from.

I have definitely improved. I need to practice a lot in order to make the exact movement, though. It's tough!!!

Sorry for retroposting. I’ve been wanting to comment but only recently have had the time. I’m an adult who’s been trying to learn to swim with little or no success for the past 7 years. I commented on your video 2 Reasons Why Learning to Swim is Hard. I know full well that just watching RU-vid videos isn’t enough to learn to swim or anything else. You have to go to a pool physically and put in the hard, tedious practice. One problem I have is something I call “pool anxiety”. I’ve heard of the problem of “gym anxiety” and I suspect it’s a lot like that. Swimming pools and their environment just aren’t inviting places for me. I feel self-conscious at them, especially when just about everyone but me, including children and old people, are jumping into and swimming in the deep end, and I’m flailing around clumsily in the shallow end with a buoyancy belt on. The young life guards have cold, worried, bored, or disgusted looks on their face when they even bother to glance at me. Unlike with my running, in which I feel a reasonable competence and solidarity with other runners, I just don’t feel part of the swimmer culture, the scene. Of course, this is my own problem. More videos won’t help. As for giving you feedback, I think your channel is aimed much more at people who already know how to swim and are aiming for excellence. I’m not in that class or even trying to be. I’m aiming for basic competence, and as I’ve just said, that requires some consistent real-life practice. I’ve tried finding swimming buddies, but nobody’s been interested. Lessons are a bit out of my price range. Professional psychology is much too expensive, and I reserve the right to doubt its theories. I’m not the only one. What some swimming teacher or teachers need to do is start some program that addresses the hardcore of hard cases like me. People who can’t seem to float, tread water, panic in the deep end, etc. Most of the videos just repeat each other and don’t really address our hard case problems. I’m not saying you should do this. It may not be your thing, and that’s okay. But it’d be great if there were some kind of support group for swimmer wannabes who’ve tried but haven’t succeeded. Just a thought.

I hope you keep your promise and read my comment: Your videos are great for thinking about your own style and improve it in the next training. But I have one unanswered question (or its answered differently in different RU-vid Videos). When do I have to kick with which leg? I do one kick on the other site while pulling, then two not so powerfull kicks, so that I can start again with crossed kicking and pulling. Is it right? Or is there no such thing as wrong and right?
@SkillsNT
@SkillsNT 5 лет назад
Thank you! The best way to think about it is that one leg should be down when the opposite arm just entered the water and it is stretched in front. If you are swimming distance then you can do one or three kicks per stroke, but going fast you need 3 kicks per stroke (2 kicks with one led and one leg) That would be 6 kicks per stroke cycle.
