A new viral TikTok filter, which has been used more than 8.5 million times, is stirring conversation on whether it is creating unrealistic beauty expectations. NBC’s Valerie Castro got the un-filtered view from people on the streets of New York.

Nothing has changed the only difference now to back in the day is social media, phones, instant change back in the day you saw it on TV or in a magazine and to get the look you had to make a effect which most would pass on because it's too much work and want come out the way it is on TV or in a magazine

In one of my psychology classes in college, it was brought to my attention that people are actually more likeable when they aren't seen as too perfect. Your quirks and uniqueness makes you more desirable to others. Don't buy into unrealistic beauty standards. Those standards will most likely change with time anyway.

I would consider if I were you, practical real world experience and what you see people do in reality and perhaps the thought that what you're being taught in class may not be based on the factors I mentioned above. How are people that are attractive usually treated from your observation? How are celebrities treated? There are more examples. I'm not telling you that you're wrong but I don't agree with what you're being taught. Good people get free things from retailers sometimes, get into clubs easier and earlier, get preferential treatment in legal situations sometimes, etc. It's not in all ways nor all times but it's truly a natural human behavior.

yes and all psychology classes will teach you about the halo effect, in which people are treated better and have better life outcomes by being more attractive. 'quirks' can be slapped onto a pretty face and make them even more likeable. 'quirks' on an ugly person (especially women) are either ignored or make them seem less desirable. there's eventually a point of diminishing returns with beauty, but that bar is very high, and gets higher as beauty standards continue to rise

Thank you for sharing this... because based on my experience, it is true... I have always hated my nose as a child.. it is a button piggy nose... I was only made fun of as a very young child in elementary.. but it stuck with me my whole young life until I started dating.. and hearing men say that was something that caught their eye.. it was what separated me from others and seeing my confidence in a room made me stand out.. I hate to admit that those moments are what made me come to peace with my nose.. but its true.... another example to prove your point is with a well known actress, Jennifer Grey from Dirty Dancing.. let's be honest, her nose was what we loved or remembered most about her face.. So when she changed it, it changed her whole face.. till this day, she says it was the worse decision she ever made... she is so beautiful either way.. my point is, love you for who you are because that is what separates you from others!

It’s true, it’s why I receive a lot of envy from women when people are more interested in me than them even though I’m technically an uggo. It’s attractive to see someone comfortable in their own body who is confident in a respectful way and not incredibly insecure and obsessive. Regardless, people will still attack you for your looks constantly when you’re not perfect. Women can’t really win in that way

This filter reconstructs the bone structure of the face, not just making the lips and cheeks more plump. This filter can cause someone to not even like how their face looks at any age. Some things that are created for social media, sometimes are better left as an idea or on the cutting room floor.

Yeah but this is the issue. She doesnt look too far off but only with make up and some procedures, she will be able to achieve that look. This perpetuates the idea that being natural isn't good enough. No wonder so many people are getting procedures done nowdays. Whether thats ethically right or not, it still creates more pressure in society for people to get something done in order to look 'acceptable'.

It looks like it converts the images from pixels to vector, as result, smoother facial lines and blemishes removed. It appears too “cartoony” or “fake” as it loses the “imperfections” on our faces - like lines and marks on a tree, they tell a story; they give us our individual character.

men have less wiggle room for what's seen as attractive. there are vastly different standards for male beauty, e.g. virtually all (noticeable) makeup is avoided, eyes and lips can only be enlarged ever so slightly before they become 'feminine.' whereas it's socially acceptable for women to get lip fillers, teeny tiny noses, false lashes, eyeliner, eyeshadow, blush, foundation, etc. if a guy's face changed as much as the women's faces, he would look femininized to most people

If this technology gets adopted by mainstream media, a lot of professional makeup artists could lose their jobs. For example, when a newsreporter is about to deliver the news on tv, instead of someone doing their makeup, the cameraman could simply apply this filter to the reporter's face so they'll be camera-ready. Also, around 2010 or so, I remember when HD cameras and televisions were becoming popular and people were concerned about the high definition exposing our facial flaws and imperfections. Today, we are swinging in the opposite direction with becoming too flawless.

My daughter only gets to use our cell phone on the weekends and for 4 hours max...she doesnt have a cell of her own. Most of the time she is bored but due to that bored-ness she invents her own games, writes stories, reads books and learns to sew instead. I know i wont be able to control this behavior for long but at least it instills a sense of non dependency at an early age. I feel sorry for her, the future is rough

23yr old women and I have NEVER had social media. No Facebook, no ticktock, no Instagram NOTHING. I have messenger for Samsung and it's only family and colleagues lol. I workout everyday, I eat very well Balanced meals, cook, clean, live out in the country, work from home full time, do yoga, take amazing care of my hair and skin. I REFUSE to give a crap about other people's appearance. I don't even know any recent celebrities, I'm on here occasionally for true crime and self help stuff, other than that I don't even have a t.v. I'm on here like 30 minutes at a time, during summer almost never since I garden and hike a lot, DISCONNECT YOURSELVES. You'll get much farther in life, at 16 I worked full time. Moved out at 18. Today I own my dream home, with my fiance and two little dogs.

Makeup for many is just a polished look of ones self. As a new content creator uploading soon I also struggled to determine whether or not I'd wear makeup in my "shown face" videos, something that faceless content creators, including on TikTok, don't have to do. I decided not to wear it on a regular basis (none so far) until I record a course, and to never use the filter, but I understand the temptation to use it. Beauty without putting the work in lines up with our "want it now" culture. Just click a few buttons to get the makeup look (and instant weightloss) without actually having to apply, clean up, clean off your face, and without the cost of actually buying makeup or managing the makeup clutter. Girls and women are expected to look flawless, stunning, and thin in photos. I understand completely.

My lord. I used to love what I called “the pretty filter” when I first started using Snapchat but it never looked natural and I felt silly. Stopped doing that years ago and have come to love the portrait option on my iPhone :) Natural beauty is so much better. Can’t imagine growing up in todays times. Social media on its own is the devil. Add to that these ridiculous filters combined with todays beauty standards… and you have broken children/teens/young adults thinking they just aren’t good enough.

It just looks like a full face of makeup with contour. I don’t use filters or really any makeup except for special occasions, but I don’t get why this made the news lol. It’s just like if someone chooses to wear a lot of makeup, they’ll alter how they look for the day. I guess it could get to where people can’t take pictures without a filter (I know some people like that) and that’s where I think it becomes too much, but that’s with all the filters out there not just this one.

Makeup cant remove facial lines, distort the jaw, neck, make your lips physically bigger and your skin blur. I wear makeup every day and they subtly do all those things, but the filter makes it extremely dramatic and over the top. If you cant turn into kim kardashian with the best of makeup...but a filter instantly makes you turn into kylie k....then that is very crazy indeed

This app seems to be targeting gals more--the modifications for male faces are way less. Ladies, hang onto your dough, and accept that you are good enough, as is. No need for alterations, but I do understand the pressure to improve upon one's natural looks and bodies in certain industries--film, modelling, etc. Once you embark upon the path of plastic surgery, there is no end. And,,, you will eventually look nothing like your original self, and perhaps even worse because it is not possible to predict how the body heals and responds to so many interventions.

Our poor kids are growing up with things that damage their mental and physical health that NO adult has ever even thought about having to process as a child... we were told looking at airbrushed photos on the magazine stands in grocery stores was unhealthy expectations for young minds to see... now this?! If you all are about cancel culture, influencers that use this app should be who you cancel. This generation of kids are going to be so screwed up. God bless them and protect them.

I don't like these types of filters and throw social media in the mix, it's a recipe for disaster in my personal opinion. I am a model but for all of my childhood and teenage years I struggled immensely with my body and these ridiculous expectations of society and beauty. I now completely disregard social media because of it. I haven't even done modeling at all anymore unless my agency gets me work because with modeling you need a social media presence for networking purposes but I can't even handle social media in itself so I don't even use it anymore. It's gone and I haven't been more happier with this decision. Plus social media is all fake anyways. People only post their highlights... it's not all rainbows sunshines and yacht parties all the time. We all are going through something but these platforms don't always show it

I was also amazed by this filter , but I know that I can achieve that look also with makeup. That said it might not be good for young people...and it definitely will push more people to plastic sergury...Once you see it you want to look like that!

If everyone is beautiful then nobody is beautiful. We need to stop letting everyone think they are models. It's OK to not be beautiful, you have value in other ways. Just like not everyone can be some rocket scientist. You don't have to be beautiful to be successful and happy in life
