THIS Was Almost The FINAL Simpsons Episode Ever 

Homer being a being a better grandfather than father is brilliant... he didn’t learn until he saw how his kids turned out as adults.

I always thought that episode felt a lot like a series finale, and that it would have made a good one. As for when the show will come to an end, I have a feeling it won't be until the death of one of cast that voices the Simpsons themselves.

I want the last episode to loop into the pilot so the show never ends.

It would make sense to end the series with a Christmas episode since it started with a Christmas episode. Everything would have come full circle.

I remember seeing this on a reddit thread 10 years ago: The show begins with the family watching Itchy and Scratchy. They announce that the show is coming to an end and the entire family gasps in horror. They then announce that the last episode will be aired in a years time, and until then, a contest will be running; this contest will offer the winner the chance to write what will happen in the finale. The entire Simpson family applies. Krusty is in charge of choosing the winner. He falls in love with one of the Simpson's idea and puts it in winners box. He makes a mistake though, he puts all five of their ideas in the box by accident. He goes on his show to announce the winner and pulls out five cards out of the box. Stumped, he reads all five names out, "Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie." Flash forward a year later and Bart is in class describing his take on the Itchy and Scratchy finale to Milhouse, while showing us Itchy and Scratchy with Bart's voice-over. He finishes and the class is silent, Edna Krabappel is staring at him and says, "After-school detention." The scene then cuts to the power plant and Homer is describing his finale to Lenny and Carl. He finishes, a bell rings and he gets in a radiation suit. The scene cuts to a supermarket and Marge is describing her take to Helen Lovejoy, she finishes and strolls Maggie in the trolley to another aisle. Here, Maggie sees the unibrow baby and starts describing her take via waving and motioning. She finishes and the scene cuts to Lisa, she begins describing her take to Sherri and Terri. She finishes and picks up her saxophone to go to music practice. She walks in the music room sits down and then sees the time. She realizes the show is going to be on in ten minutes. She plays the Itchy and Scratchy melody on her sax and bolts out. It cuts to Bart, he's writing on the black board: "I will not talk in class ever again" he hears a bell, realizes the time and runs out. Cut to Homer holding some plutonium at a conveyor belt when a bell rings at the plant and he too realises the time and runs off, dropping some plutonium. Cut to the supermarket and we see Marge and Maggie checking out and running through the exit doors. Cut to a birds eye view of their home and we see everyone rushing to take a seat in the couch. They look at each other, they smile, the Itchy and Scratchy music plays, and it cuts to credits. -littlemoney69 A few obvious and story adjustments but in my opinion definitely one of the best fan endings out there.

I want an ending where Lisa doesn’t end up with Milhouse. That pairing is such a defeat for her character

I suspect the last episode will be called Maggie's first words. It will be the canon for her talking... and it will be a sweet little line that will be heart warming. Probably something like "thanks for all the great years, we'll miss you"

This episode really did fit a finale for the simpsons. Then again, it probably will never end.

My big upsetting moment would be never getting a episode when Maggie finally speaks and I mean an actual decent voice. Treehouse of Horror give them opportunity but they never do it.

I don't think a future episode is a good ending. They feel like Treehouse of Horror to me, and I don't think they really count as cannon.

I want Troy mclaire in the last episode, Even though the voice actor died, or Ralph. Those are my two favorite characters

Personally, I think the movie should have been the finale to the series. This was something very fitting with how the story played out and how it had that feeling of "that's all, folks. We made it to the end."

I would love it if the series ended in a Who Shot Mr. Burns like multi part episodes that allow for the fans (many of which have been for almost there whole life) to play along. Wouldn't that be cool?

As a final episode this would have been fitting, though I do like the idea of ending it on a Christmas show like the first episode, in effect closing the loop. Maybe have some kind of meta speech and then undercut it with a joke about how long it went on for.

I actually really liked this Simpsons episode, I stopped keeping up with The Simpsons around ‘09 cause they just lost that charm they once had. Then I randomly decided to come back and see how they were doing and this was the episode I saw, and thought “Holy crap they’re good again!”

Fun 🤩 Facts: since Holidays of Future Passed was originally intended as the series finale, season 23 would’ve been the show’s final season. Also it was planned to be the last episode of season 23, but since The Simpsons keep airing the last episode of season 23 is Lisa Goes Gaga

This actually was the last episode for me. I haven't seen any episodes since. So weird to learn that it was intended to be the finale. Spooky.

This would have been an incredible finale! For me whenever they do finally come to an ending episode (unless they want to end it with a 2nd movie) it should end with Homer, Marge and Maggie realising they’re late for Bart and Lisa’s school Christmas pageant, (Bart and Lisa are already there worried their parents aren’t on their way) rushing into the car and driving away in the snow. This obviously leads straight into how the very first episode opened and would make the whole show a loop, just a really nice way to finish it in my opinion

I just wish the sequel to this episode was scrapped, myself, as it took something away from this one. This is definitely one of the better later episodes.

It would have been a good ending. I'm a writer and believe the ending of any story is the most important part.

Honestly I think if they did the last episode it should end each of the families arc, bart and sideshow bobs last fight, homer getting a better job and being a better worker. Etc etc

Something like Flanders ladder would be good but I think everyone should come together and say this is the final season add do 23 to 26 leading to the in bringing back old guest stars and characters and wrap as much as they can into a season and not just one episode

I think this would've been a good finale back in 2011. I'm glad the show's still going but if this was the last episode I would have been more than happy. 😁

A final episode I feel would have to be a final season, each episode following a character or several characters that ultimately ends with a feel good ending, and the final episode being a Christmas special that focuses on the Simpsons house, ending sweetly as the family sit down and watch the TV and Maggie saying something like "I love you" or something

I’d like to see a sequel to “Who Shot Mr. Burns”. In this one Mr. Burns buys a super weapon in the present, that he uses in the future seen in this episode. They send future Maggie back to the present into all Terminator to stop Mr. Burns from buy the super weapon.

I think a great ending would be a revamp of the very first episode. Not exactly the same, but similar in simplicity and theme: No Christmas bonus, down on luck, miracle, family Christmas card. A homage to the one that started it all. :)

If this show ever ended I wouldn't have anything to watch on TV lol! I've been watching this show for so long that I've memorized everything lol! The Simpsons isn't just a show, The Simpsons is a part of us all.

I don't want the show to end at all, but I'm starting to think it probably should now, the cast is so worn out especially Julie. I feel bad for them all, and the show lost its spark

Holidays of future past is one of my favourite episodes and if the show had ended there I would have been fine bc it was indeed the perfect wrap up to an amazing show.

It’s been thirty years. At this point I’m gonna be stunned if it does end. At all. It’s sad because when it does those that even notice won’t care.

Want to see if you and everyone agrees with Me: Agnes is a great character.She may not treat Seymour right and is a bit wicked and narcissistic but that is what I love.The producers made a character you love to hate,they’ve kept her original character relatively the same throughout the years.How they made Agnes was great and is one of the few characters that I can say my opinion hasn’t changed on.

If it did end with this episode I would not be mad. But in my personal opinion when they make the last episode I hopefully would like it to be an hour or more. I also have thought and had ideas on how they may end it. But I'm sure when the show does end the cast and crew of The Simpsons will make a great ending for the series but until then I'm going to rewatch the show over and over and even when it ends I'll still watch it over and over.

The Simpsons have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I really don't understand why people are so eager for the show to end. It's true I'm not as an avid consumer as I used to, but the idea of show like The Simpsons to be cancelled just for the sake of being around for too long appals me. It seems we thrive on putting an end to everything that has been around for what we consider too long! We even consider performers like Britney Spears, Pink or Justin Timberlake as being too old! Damn!!! What would have been of Tina Turner's 1980's solo comeback or of Madonna's 1990's Ray of Light rise if we looked at them then as we look at other artists these days? As long as there is quality, artistry, will and motivation, why should we go "Logan's Run" on everything? (Old movie! Look it up!) I hope the Simpsons continue to be around for many years to come.

What if they builded up to the finale all the way from the premiere of the last season? Like the season premiere taking off in Christmas '89 and then let the characters actually age and evolve a little for every episode until the finale taking place in present day Christmas, at the same time being a "future" episode for the characters. Bart could still be divorced from Jenda and have his two boys. Maybe he also has trouble affording their christmas presents and ends up adopting a dog for them?

If they ended with a movie, they'd have to finish the trioligy.

Lydia, I have a question for you and everyone else. I have a personal selection as to when the show should have ended. There are 2 episodes that I think would have worked fine as a final episode. The first one I think would have worked is "Lisa's wedding", the first episode set in the future. I know the idea for "Holidays of future passed" was to show us how the family will end up in the future. But sometimes I think that the very first episode set in the future should have been the final episode. By giving us a glimpse into the future it gave us some nice glimpses for how Lisa and her family will end up. I know "Holidays of future passed" did give us some nice happy ending feelings, but I just seem to like "Lisa's wedding" better. And the other one that I like as a final episode is "Behind the laughter". As the season finale of the 11th season it works good as a final episode since it is a finale in its own right. And it does seem like a episode that tells the simpsons entire journey up to that time. And it gives us a happy ending feeling. So what do you think? Do you think "Lisa's wedding", or "Behind the laughter" would have worked good as a finale. Or do you have your own opinion?

A few things I noticed in this episode ‐ Bart didn't turned his life horribly like if he joined a violent street gang, turned into a violent person like Snake, spent most of his life childhood in juvie and his adult years in prison, or became an alcoholic like Barney or his father. - Homer & Marge not getting divorced at any point due to Homer's many problems over the years - Homer being okay with Lisa marrying Milhouse even though Homer has never liked him throughout his whole lifetime.

When I watched snippets of the episode, I didn’t understand what the medical robot said about the umbilical cord being a vocal cord. If Maggie speaks, what would happen to the baby inside her?

I don't want the final episode set in the future. I think that they should try and bring back Conan O'Brien to write the episode, because you can't go wrong with him, and I think that it should end how it started, with something kind of like "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire". Wholesome and funny at the same time. I also think that it should include characters like Moe or Ralph, to make it feel more like an episode of The Simpsons, not the *final* episode of The Simpsons.

Its weird. I have been watching the Simpsons for over 20 years, the constant through my childhood, teenage life and adult life so far, I would be watching them on Sky One. It was probably only this year I have given some thought into when the Simpsons will finish. As they almost used this 2011 episode as the finale and having done numerous future episodes I reckon there could be a 'series' of finales. More of a detailed look at how Bart became a deadbeat dad, watching Maggie grow up (which probably would be weird for long term fans, silent character suddenly being focal for an episode), how Lisa goes off to an elite University but then comes back and settles for Milhouse after her intended marriage goes up in smoke with Hugh (and we find out what happens to him after).

I know it wouldn’t satisfy everyone but I would have been if it was

I think ending it with a Simpsons Movie film would definitely be the way to go, not with the second film currently in development but with a third one. I'd like to see a completed trilogy of Simpsons Movies that ends the show and films in a similar way to the previously intended final episode, ageing The SImpsons characters - only not quite as much as in that episode. Instead I think they should do something similar to the third and fourth Toy Story movies, and opt for themes of change and moving forward with your life. A film where at the end of the movie Lisa goes on to college, Bart moves out of his family home, Homer retires, Maggie is now at school and Marge finds herself with more quality time with her husband. Then you could leave it open for a continuation later down the road with The Simpsons in their new status quo, and when the voice actors are one day no longer around you have the excuse of ageing for why they sound different.

Apparently, season 30 was ment to be the final season but disney demanded more episodes. Which is why they aren't on disney+ yet

The season 31 ending was what I thought was going to be the finale because •they got a dog kinda •It was Christmas when it wasn’t in real time •it makes fricking sense

They could make a movie every season just staple 3 episodes together a la south parks trilogy episodes.

That episode may not have been the last one, but the Simpsons really should have a series finale someday. Their show is really starting to go down the drain and become less funny. Trying to stay on the air forever is not worth it.

I think the final episode should be the documentarian from “Springfield up” making his final trip to Springfield only this time the passage would be acknowledged and everyone will have aged we’d learn how kids turned out how adults aged/died etc as everyone reminisced about their lives the episode would end with everyone watching the film finally premiere with a look if nostalgia as the screen shows actual scenes from the series mixed with new growing up/old scenes as the credits roll

The Christmas specials, future episodes, the history and literary episodes, the trips abroad and the Treehouses of Horror are my favorites.

I love this episode and I think it would have been a fitting finale. (Except that I hate the idea of Lisa ending up with Milhouse. She deserves better). I'm happy however, that we've got many more seasons after this one. I'm a lover of modern episodes and I think the last couple of seasons have featured a few of the show's funniest episodes. I hope that when we do get the real finale, it manages to be as sweet and funny and sentimental as this one. ❤️

I thought about if and when The Simpsons ends the episode should be titled Good Morning. Which is a call back to the Tracey Ullman short that started it all. The ending scene with all of the Simpson family members getting up in the morning and Maggie saying her first words “Good Morning” with everyone shocked.

$300,000 per episode? Damn! I'd voice a series for like $50,000... a year!!

There should be a 50th anniversary episode and it should potentially end with a 1000th episode - a nice, big round number. I haven't watched 'Holidays of Future Passed'. Al I ask is that the eventual last episode be a montage and feature length - 1 hour - of all the wonderful exploits of this wonderful family. Like if u agree and please reply as to what u think

I saw this thumnail and was like wait noooooo but then i read it properly 😂

The last part should be a call back to the first ever short they did; Homer tucking Bart into bed, Marge Lisa, and singing to Magie, but more with how they are now; then go to Marge and Homer talking about what a family they have and how they've changed over the years. Then do the last bit, with them and the rest of the family if not the whole town talking with the us about the changes, maybe about the friends they lost showing something to honor Phill Hartman and Marcia Wallace; then do a backwards thing though the down showing the shops closed, the chalkboard empty; and then the people in the movie theater after the credits standing up.

Not gonna lie, as much as I love the Simpsons, I wish they would have ended it a long time ago. I watch an episode or two of the later seasons once a while and it just isn't the same show as it was back in the 90's, or even the early 2000's. I think this would have been a fitting and satisfying end to the show, and as far as I'm concerned is the series finale in my head canon, regardless of how they do eventually end it.
