Lead singer, Dr. Dexter Holland, holds a doctorate degree in molecular biology where he studied microRNA in HIV which helped determine just how HIV survives in humans and was crucial in the discoveries of cures for AIDS. One of the smartest people in punk music.

My dad died young and unexpectedly in 1991. I found Offspring Gone Away a few years later and it really helped articulate how I felt in a way that i struggled to find on my own. I really made a connection to it and it is soooo different than anything else I have ever heard from the offspring. Last week my brother died young and unexpectedly. I could really use an Offspring Gone Away reaction right now. It would make me smile when there feels very little to smile about. Thanks.

Wickedly FUN Band that is still going STRONG. This is a very Southern California song. The Baggy Shorts era. The early 80’s through the early 90’s were very violent times from LA, the Beaches, to the Inland Empire, & San Diego. Not to mention Central California. The Gangs were going at it BIG Time vying for control. It has flattened out, a little, in most areas, but not all.

It wasn't that violent. 98% of the citizenry didn't even notice. The only reason I knew was because my wife was an ER doc at Harbor UCLA. If you didn't live in Inglewood, East LA, or Watts ... not an issue

Well@@theccpisaparasite8813define “not very violent”. Between 1985 to 1992 I worked as a Law Enforcement Officer in SoCal, so I guess my perspective is a bit biased. I would imagine that it also depends on what Region you were in. In the later part of the 80’s, right or wrong, San Bernardino was considered the murder capital of The USA. The Dead don’t always make it to ER Doctors; they go straight to the Morgue Respect to ALL ER Doctors. True American Heroes. ✌️

I remember when this came out (1994) and i played it full blast, summer's day, all the family around and my 4 year old niece going absolutely nuts and headbanging. Great memories, great song. The 1990's took the best of the 60's, 70's and 80's and mashed them all together.

Fun Fact: The band enlisted their friend Jason "Blackball" McLean to deliver the famous phrase, "Gotta keep 'em separated." "[He] had kind of a distinctive voice," said Noodles. "He grew up in a Mexican neighborhood, all his friends were Mexican, he had the slang down, the accent. He was a Scottish cholo from Whittier. So we asked him to come in and do the line. He wound up doing it in the video, too." - this song was on Rock Band 2

I noticed that the house they are at is the same one from the "Self Esteem" video! It is the same yard, kind of long and skinny, with a house with an attached garage. I remember hearing that a lot of their songs are about how they saw the kids that came around their early concerts. The girl in the Self Esteem video with the oxygen tube, was one of their superfans.

The Offspring actually started as a hardcore punk band in the late 1980s; this was their commercial breakthrough in 1994. "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" was in 2000 when they went for a much more pop friendly sound and started headlining 20,000 seat arenas.

For more FUN rock gotta check out "Electric Callboy", a mix of heavy rock, EDM and pop music. Like attending a heavy metal show and a EDM rave begins in the middle, they have not put out a bad song in 3 years. Start with "Hypa Hypa" to get the mood, then "We Got The Moves" or "Pump It" if you like some work out music.

Oh my goodness, this was on the radio and MTV (back when that was still a thing) all the time! It was on Rock Band 2, Tony Hawk ProSkater 4, all of the Crazy Taxis, Forza 5, and a bunch more. I know you kids don't remember, but we used to have a hockey team in OKC called the Blazers. I used to attend quite often. Whenever a fight would happen on the ice, they would play this song. You guys need to play "You're Gonna Go Far Kid" next. It may be my favorite of theirs. Love you guys!

Never played Tony Hawk, but I have a gaming connection to this song. It was huge around the time I was learning a tabletop game called Blood Bowl, and now the two are welded together in my mind. If I’m playing the game now or even just looking over rules or miniatures I’ll hear the song start up in my head; if I hear the song I can practically see the board and dice in front of me.

The song was featured in Rock Band 2 and Rock Band Unplugged. According to the Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 soundtrack list of of songs, it didn't appear in that game..but it also says the N64 version has instrumentals and chopped up versions of songs, so it's possible it was sampled there.

I just saw them in concert for the thirtieth anniversary of the Smash album. This song and Self Esteem are off it. Someone once described them as happy punk. The music is very upbeat but the subject matter always matters. Some more songs to give a spin Mota, Walla Walla and last one of the greatest love songs ever Me and My Old Lady.

The kid from the "Pretty Fly for a Whit Guy" video also makes an appearance in another more comedic track Offspring recorded, "Why Don't You Get a Job?" that's definitely worth checking out. Also, I've got a double header suggestion that you really should review on the same day, just to see the amazing difference two bands can put to the same exact song with the same exact lyrics, "Gone Away" originally done by Offspring but covered two decades later by Five Finger Death Punch. First of all, it's an amazing song that just tears at your heart in either version, but the video for the Death Punch cover will probably literally bring you to tears.

28 or so years ago I worked at Pizza Hut and when I worked on the weekend perforating crusts with my manager, she would always sing to me, "you got to keep them perforated" to the tune of this song. To this day when this song comes on I still sing her alternate lyrics in my head. 😂
