I love that they reacted immediately to the Avatar The Legend of Korra Series. It is much more mature and better narratively with better villains you will be very surprised watching it and without a doubt Season 3 of Korra is the best of Avatar Zaheer steals the show and then in Season 4 Kuvira does not shine, all the villains are brutal and in the book Spirits we can see the Story of the First Avatar the Avatar Wan also that Korra and Asami at the end of the series end up as a couple I really liked it some say it's forced but it was very supportive for Korra in her worst moments

Korra spent most of her life cloistered, as a student of the elements. She had literally no life outside of working on being the Avatar. Her coming to Republic City is literally her first time in the outside world.

I’m so fucking sick and tired of hearing this excuse for terrible writing… Katara and Aang had to deal with ethnic genocide and saving the world. Korra had her family, cousin, mentors and leaders. She wasn’t sheltered.

It’s actually very shang hai tan style (as we call it in chinese/cantonese). It’s like the 1920s-1940s Shang Hai. It was a great era mix of traditional east meets west in fashion, music and culture! It’s very often used to portray opulence in modern movies because it is an iconic era. Actually the whole premise is very close to that era, fashion, architecture and the timeline (industrial revolution).

Ange you were right about Korra's characterization before in the first episode. She IS eager to learn to be an avatar, unlike Aang. Her problem is that she thinks being the avatar is all about fighting and beating up bad guys. Tenzin's airbending training is a lot of meditation, being passive, soft dancing flowing moves, all of which to her feel as far removed from fighting as possible. She sees pro- bending as more modern effective fighting styles, so that is what she is interested in. Pro bending is like the modern mma sports while old fashioned bending is like old fashioned martial arts.

Korra's right. Tenzin isn't great teacher... Korra just needed a different way of learning cause she didn't grow up like a monk. She has totally different temperament. And it's soo cool that Tenzin got it at the end of episode. And Korra also brought apologies. I love their dynamics

While with Aang we saw him learning how to be the Avatar across all seasons, with Korra we see her learning how to be the Avatar in season 1 only, the other 3 we just see her being the Avatar, we see how her choices actually affect the world around her and not just the team

It's not really spoiler since they mentioned it in episode 1, but Korra's journey is going to be more of a spiritual side of being the avatar. If you remember they said she has always excelled at actual bending but didn't have hardly any spiritual training. Aang had a lot of spiritual training with being raised by the monks, but his journey was having to master the physical side of bending.

Well, learning the bending disciplines and ending the war was the frame. The real meat of ATLA was still a spiritual and emotion journey for all the main cast, coming into their own. Aang may have gotten a good amount of spiritual training but being 12 was a little too emotionally immature to handle it all. His journey was him learning and becoming mature enough to come into his role and be resolute as the Avatar that he wants to be. Not too disimilar to Korra here, she just already has the bending down packed.

I always appreciated that it wasn’t just Korra being a little hotheaded that was causing the problem. Tenzin was also being inflexible in his teachings, not taking into consideration what kind of person his student is. Korra is a very kinesthetic learner. Also, she had a point about him keeping her cooped up on an island. I like isolation but someone saying I couldn’t go out and do stuff if I wanted would drive me nuts.

W. Once again its interesting to see the differences in character. An avatar who actually wants to be avatar and is very into the physical action aspects. Tenzin is a great teacher.. for only a certain type of person. He doesnt have the range needed because hes only had to teach his kids. There is room for him to grow too!

Definitely. I think Season 1 and 3 really come through in being great. I rewatch these two seasons a lot. For me the second half of Season 2 I'm not big on, and I never seem to actually finish watching the second half of Season 4 no matter how many times I have tried. Yes. I have never finished watching the show. I tend to stop around Season 4, Episode 6. But Season 1 and 3, chef's kiss. Love 'em. Honorable mentions for the first halves of 2 and 4.

@@LycanFerret oh really! you're the first person I've seen praising s1 but not watching s4 lol. i think overall we can all agree s2 was the weakest season, esp writing wise, but it had some cool moments. top season for me is s3 bc it's just the goat season but I love s4 a lot! @@tamarlevy5949 Spoilers: . . . . . . . Season 2 for me had its highest points with the Water Tribe stuff, Bolin and the movies(my favorite), and the Wan short story. The actual Spirit World parts I found to be very... not enjoyable. Especially what they did to Iroh. And that is most of the second half of S2. Did not like. Season 4 mainly gets me because I also don't like how they did Toph. Basically if Toph and Iroh did not exist, I would be far less opposed to Season 2 and 4. I do not like their characterizations in the series.

I don't know much of the lore but I think the new bison aren't the same as Appa, they are wild bison that were encountered and preserved after the war. Also you'll need to read the comics to learn what happened after Avatar, specifically what happened to Zuko's mom but also how Republic City was formed. There's a few of them.

That question of Ange's is actually answered directly in the show later. As far as I recall, Appa was never called the last air bison in the original series. We just never saw wild ones, which is unfortunate.

Just to give some context for how LoK is structured: it was originally announced to be a mini series only! What is now known as “Season 1” was supposed to be the entire show. That’s why Korra already mastered 3 elements and she only needs to learn Airbending and why the storyline is self contained. And then fans demanded more so they greenlit only one more season, so then they ended the series at S2. And then the fans demanded more yet again so they greenlit 3 more seasons! Yep, LoK was supposed to have 5 seasons at one point, but halfway through production of S4 (i think, this is all just from memory) they cancelled S5 and just ended it at S4.

Any resemblance you see is purely do to him being of Fire Nation descent. 7:38 - Iroh’s son’s name was Lu Ten, However he died young without having any children so no descent there if that’s what you were going for. 8:31 - Being hit headed isn’t a Zuko only thing you know? I know you guys miss the old cast but projecting isn’t going to help on that front. Don’t worry the new ones are good in their own ways. Glad you guys are enjoying this, and don’t worry if anyone gives you flack for it. Korra has its flaws but it’s a good series in my books and hope you guys enjoy it all the way!

Korra has mastered “Traditional” fire earth and water bending. Like she said in this episode she needs to master “modern” bending styles so she can operate in the city. But yeah mastering one style opens the door for other styles. Also she doesn’t know any sub elements like lightning or metal.

I know that this is just episode 2 and its natural for AtLA fans to look for any wisp of connection of every detail LoK has in AtLA but i hope you trust me when I say that if you treat this show totally separate from AtLA and appreciate it for what it is than what it should have been in comparison to AtLA, the better experience you'll have with the show. Easter eggs will be much more exciting whenever its revealed than always being vigilant whether its something from AtLa or not. Bbecause this show will never hide it from you it will tell you whenever it's an AtLa reference blatantly. So no need to speculate or be on the look out. Just enjoy the show for what it is...

I don't see any reason to think that Mako is a descendant of Zuko other than him being a firebender. Really, nothing points to this at all. I was surprised that they didn't clock how strange it was that Mako and Bolin are brothers but that they bend different elements.

Probably because Mako and Zuko are similar in appearance, Mako is even similar do Iroh (the general). However, the appearance on fire benders with hair, eyes and skin color is the same like it is with all other benders...like all water benders have darker skin and blue eyes, or air benders are bald and have grey eyes, etc... And yes, the brothers bending different elements is way more surprising in my opinion

Legend of Korra has a lot of problems, but to me the biggest one is that Korra ruins lot of the lore of the previous series, with retcons or directly contradicting it.

I think the characterisation is nice in this episode but I’m now so against the pro bending idea. It’s not the idea of it being a sport but every element gets the punch motion and not much of the old magic system remains. It really is a shame and for me the first of Korras changes I don’t like.
