I took that lyric a different way, but I like your version of what it means... I've heard others saying that this song was simply about depression, as you two are saying. But it's far more - the reason for his depression is grief, because his wife or girlfriend has just died, and he's watching or imagining the funeral procession: "I see a line of cars and they're all painted black With flowers and my love both never to come back" "... I could not foresee this thing happening to you..." "I've seen people turn their heads and quickly look away Like a newborn baby, It just happens every day" I love this song, and hate it. I lost my beautiful wife to cancer five years ago, and every time I hear it I'm reminded of how it felt. But I still listen.

When I hear the line a bit into the song about "I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" (funeral) and then it talks about flowers, then the song makes sense to me. The only thing I knew about the song is that it was the (original) theme song for the late 80s Vietnam war (although technically it was never categorized as a war here in the U.S.A., since it was never voted on as such by congress) show "Tour of Duty". Great show by the way. Unlike a lot of shows about Vietnam from the 70s and 80s, it didn't portray all of the Soldiers as hopeless scumbags, but showed them as true human beings, with the complexities that brings. It did show the negative aspects, but it also showed all of the positive aspects as well.

You need to remember two things about the Rolling Stones and bands of that era - first, this was during Vietnam, so a lot of the songs actually had protests in them. For a great example of this, listen to the Monkees' Last Train to Clarksville. Secondly, these bands, like the Stones, the Who, the Beatles, Cream, the Byrds, and so many more - they were actually creating what we think of as rock today.

This comes from a time, 1966, when groups like The Beatles, The Byrds The Beach Boys and others, not to mention Bob Dylan were getting bored of the conventional styles of music they were playing, and were experimenting with different types of instrumentation and styles of music. Hence the use of the sitar, which had already been used by The Beatles on Norwegian Wood in 1965. This was a very fruitful period of music, and psychedelia was just emerging. The type of drugs they were using, e.g. LSD can not be discounted.

Great song. Look at "Satisfaction," "Time is on my side," "She's a Rainbow," "Sympathy for the Devil," and from the 1980s "Start Me Up."

I love "She's a Rainbow." It has a child-like feel but also a serious message about his love for his colourful lady. And the piano is killer.

They have some lamenting his sad but beautiful songs. "Angie" is a breakup song, while "As Tears Go By" seems to tell from the perspective of an old man lamenting his bygone youth.

This was on of their earlier songs and one of the first songs of their's I knew. It fit my teen angst well. Now as an adult having lost loved ones, it takes on the deeper meaning that it was meant to convey. It is very much how one feels.

This song was selected as the theme song for Tour of Duty which was a late eighties show about the Viet Nam War and though the song came out during the war it was written in 1966 at a time when the war was just beginning to elicit intense reactions and over time it started giving the same kind of vibe as other songs like Run Through the Jungle, We Gotta Get Out of This Place, Reflections of My Life and For What It's Worth. It was a time when intense songs were all adopted to fit the mood of the war, even though the original reasons for them may have been something else. And it fit Tour of Duty very well.

Sympathy for the devil By the Rolling Stones is a must to tie in with this style. Also the Lyrics version is very cleverly done. The song is a history lesson with a message but is a very psychedelic style with some awesome music that I'm sure you guys will love....from a UK subscriber ...keep up the great work

I've been listening to this song for over 50 years and I always thought he was so upset about his love's death he was thinking of suicide. In the song: "If I look hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes" suggests he was thinking of ending his own life that night.

Whoever made this video got the lyric wrong, it's "I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky", not "I don't want to see the sun, flying high in the sky" which makes no sense lyrically. This is supposed to be an "official" Stones lyric video.

This is one of the best lyric videos I've seen. It's so dynamic and the lyrics are presented so well. I was about to compliment how accurate the lyrics were, because almost every lyric video I've seen gets some of the lyrics wrong. But then suddenly, they got it wrong too. It's: I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky. Not: Don't wanna see the sun flyin high in the sky.

As a middle-aged dude now, this song rolled across my ears with the TV show Tour of Duty and completely changed the way I looked at the Stones and the "hippie era" of music. I was (am) a metal head and didn't want anything to do with that hippy-dippy crap and then this came along and I was captivated how dark it was. After that I dug into Pink Floyd (now my absolute all-time favorite band along with Tool), Beatles, David Bowie and so much more. I realized that the hippy music wasn't all flower-power and open love (though Bowie's Memories of a Free Festival and really early Beatles stuff is still a bit too happy for me - 😅), but actually discussing real subjects, specifically the darkest theme of all, war (obviously due to Vietnam). This song actually unlocked a world of music for me that I had panned as inferior to the fast, driving, aggressive metal I loved (big Megadeth, Iron Maiden and AC/DC fan back in the day). I will be forever grateful to the Stones and that TV show for unlocking a world of some of the best music ever made. And then the '90's grunge era came and I said, "This is our '60's baby! Another music revolution is here!" Edit: Also, there is some misinterpreted lyrics at the end of the song in this video. "I wanna see your face - Painted Black" is actually just "I wanna see it painted - painted black". And the worst one was, "I wanna see the sun, flying high in the sky." which is completely contrary to the message of the song and he actually says, "I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky." A much more appropriate lyric for the overarching theme of the song.
