Bing is the ORIGINAL Crooner!!!

Thanks for sharing! That's my Uncle Edmond Hall playing clarinet and my Grandfather played with Fats Domino on the first Rock n Roll record to sell over a million copies. For many musicians in the early 20th century, being a musician was one of the ways out of the cotton and sugar cane fields. St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago jazz/blues also developed as musicians like my Great Grandfather moved up the Mississippi on river boats to work. My Uncle moved to Ghana to open a music school for kids and then eventually retired in Boston and was inducted into the New England Jazz Hall of Fame. Bing Crosby was definitely a crooner. And an often untold story is how people such as him, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Danny Kaye and others helped paved the way for many black artists, refusing to play or tour in cities and casino's that supported segregation. They would sometimes have to sleep in different quarters. These artists would often promote on their own shows artists of color and move away from showing white musicians in film, but having black musicians play the parts.. The Civil Rights movement in general became supported by people of many nationalities and faiths. Good music is good music regardless of color! You'll find many of my Uncle Edmond Hall's instrumentals on RU-vid with some amazing renditions like Dardenella. Dave Bartholomew, who was a writer and producer, also worte such classics as "My ding-a-ling," later covered by Chuck Berry. High Society was a movie in the 1950s which highlighted Newport Rhode Island and what woud become the Newport Jazz festival and the tastes of the "Well-to-do."

Bing Crosby's White Christmas was the biggest single of all time from the 1940s through the 1990s. He had one of the finest smoothest voices of all time. At the time this recording was made, he was an entertainment giant. Everybody knew who he was.

Bing and Louis were really good friends since 1926 (imagine that especially during such a time!) and remained great friends until Louis's death in 1971. Bing literally got top billing for a black person in a movie in history, and that was for Louis Armstrong in 1936. That opened so many doors for other black performers! Louis and Bing genuinely adored each other and each other's art.

Bing was the original crooner. He was the model for crooners who followed him.

Oh how my mother LOVED Louie Armstrong! And she taught her children to appreciate him too. White as white as we are, my mother’s respect, delight and honor for him helped me to recognize that “color” had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with the value of a human being! During the painful and long death of my mother from lung cancer, she relied on his song “It’s a Beautiful World” to grant her strength, joy, love and trust to constantly remind her of the value of her life in ours. Even now, years and years after her death, even the memory of that song brings me to tears. Tears of sorrow. Tears of joyful memories. Tears of the closeness of love which even death cannot erase.

Bing was the "crooner" of crooners! He was able to sing with anyone and blended in so effortlessly. From the Andrew Sisters, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald...to David Bowie! As for this jazz piece...I've got to say it is STILL alive today. Especially with my sons' high school jazz ensemble. IMUA Bing and Louis!!

I’m sure that you’ve heard Bing Crosby singing “White Christmas”. I have an album of his Christmas music that I play every year. Well it’s a CD now but it’s the same music from my childhood.

Please check out "Stormy Weather" by Lena Horne, from 1943. She was a phenomenal singer, as well as a dancer and actress. They called her Hollywood's "Velvet Voice". She was one of the most famous African American entertainers of her time, and lived from 1917 to 2010. Amber, you will love her!

Although his popularity has faded other than his Christmas music, Bing Crosby was the most popular singer in the world for quite a while. True icon of modern popular music,, and quite a popular actor for a time as well.

Many people nowadays don’t realize how Bing revolutionized popular singing. Prior to him it was common to sing opera style. Bing popularized singing in natural voice. Which everyone in popular music did ever since. He was very respected by jazz musicians as a true jazz singer, unlike many others from the era. He’s one of the all time OGs and GOATS. Louis is also one of the all time OGs and GOATS. He’s widely considered by musicians to be the greatest musician ever. He was known for musical magic, making you think you heard notes he hadn’t actually played, but only alluded to. He developed and popularized a style of simplicity, playing the least number of notes needed to convey the melody. Your brain fills in the rest. The opposite of bebop which came later. “Satchmo” means satchel mouth, referring to the baggy stretched out cheeks of a trumpet player. He’s so known for his singing now that people don’t realize what a great musician his was.

High Society is a movie... Bing is THE crooner... Again, you need to hear satchmo and Ella sing Tenderly. You'll also hear Satch play his horn and Ella give Satch a little ribbing at the end. It's very sweet.

Satchmo, or Satch Mo’, was short for Satchel Mouth, because of his puffy cheeks. The story is that when he was a kid he’d dance in the street for pennies, which would be thrown to him. He’d scoop them up and put them in his mouth! Maybe… He was also widely known as “Pops”. High Society is a musical movie and also starred Sinatra. It’s full of great songs! Try “Well Did You Evah”. Louis Armstrong’s voice was special but another to check out is Louis Prima, another jazz singer and trumpeter and bandleader who is probably best known for singing as King Louis the Orangutan in Disney’s 1967 animated The Jungle Book.

White Christmas by Bing Crosby is the biggest selling single of all time with over 50 million copies sold. I'm sure you must have heard it before at Christmas time. Satchmo, sometimes shortened to Satch, was a nickname of Louis (apparently short for Satchelmouth which he had been called at on time). Ella at times can be heard calling him Pops, another nickname of his.

I love old movies! They showed us so many great talents. Bing Crosby's voice melts butter!

"High Society" is one of my all-time favorite movie musicals from this time period. It stars Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and Frank Sinatra. Bing Crosby is definitely one of the most famous crooners of all time, as is his costar Frank Sinatra (need to cover his music too). Grace Kelly went on to become Princess Grace of Monaco when she married Prince Rainier.

Louis is a trumpet player that can sing, not a singer that plays trumpet. Bing has one of the smoothest voices of all time. Check out Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and my favorite Charlie Parker, all great jazz players. For me, all the greatest music has a jazz influence.

Bing is the first crooner. Crooners became A Thing when microphones and wireless radios were invented - before that people had to sing loud enough to compete with a band. With the advent of microphones and recorded music, people were able to sing quietly and with subtle style and be heard for the first time. I highly recommend the miniseries Soundbreaking about the history of recorded music from crooners to hip hop and beyond. Like hip hop is amazing because they managed to make music with zero access to instruments. Very interesting series with great artists

Bing Crosby is a favorite son of my hometown of Spokane, WA. He has to be the most famous person from there even over 100 years later, LOL. He went to my high school...only about 75 years before me, haha. He was amazing. And I never have enough words for how awesome Louie is. You summed it up best.

I was born three years after WWII ended. Bing and Satchmo were part of my childhood, first experienced on radio, then this new thing called tv. New technology meant I experienced many versions of the same music/song. My sons didn't know much of the music, but knew the performers. I had newer music to cherish...from 60s thru nineties. Oldest son especially liked Bings' Christmas music..his brothers got him an animatronic Bing to put under the tree, dressed in Santa suit. Over the years parts stopped working, but music still good. Now his daughter is convinced lil Bing is an elf and can't wait for him to show up. Fun to see how the music he made is still happening over and over, for 70+ years! So good to see Bing, Satchmo, Jimmy Durante, and others keep going through the generations.

You probably would enjoy Bing Crosby in his “Road” movies with Bob Hope. They were both talented and funny in everything they did, and partnering them in movies was incredible. Some of Bing Crosby’s biggest hits included “White Christmas”, “Swinging on a Star” and “Pennies from Heaven”. If you are familiar with the old Looney Tunes cartoons, both Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra were characterized in episodes as heartthrobs with the women going crazy while they performed.

I believe he premiered that tune in the movie White Christmas with the amazingly funny Danny Kaye, the female crooner Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney's aunt), and the unbelievably talented tap dancer Vera Ellen. It's a classic! Bing Crosby is in movies with Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, and so many other wonderful talents from that time.

Bing and Louis were GIGANTIC stars each in their own right! This was my mothers' generation, she was a teen during WW2 and had a great crush on Bing Crosby. EVERYBODY loved Louis Armstrong. I was a baby (Boomer) when our parents watched these guys on black and white TV, so we grew up with them, and all our parents favs,...My Mom thought Frank Sinatra was an 'interloper' as he showed up on the scene a little later after Bing. and she was a loyal Bing 'teeny bopper" We saw Louis on TV ALL THE TIME, on all the varitey shows, and as kids we absolutely loved him, So fun, so cool. Another great crooner is Mel Torme--his voice was so smooth he was called 'The Velvet Fog'. And no adventure into the crooners would be complete without Dean Martin. He is my personal favourite crooner.

Armstrong appreciated Crosby's progressive attitudes on race, and often expressed gratitude for the role in later years.

Bing was an actor also. He and Bob Hope did many movies together. but My favoite Bing movie is the classic White Christmas. I've watched it every Christmas eve for more than 50 years. Danny Kaye starred in it with him

Oh I adore you Kids. My son grew up being exposed to any music I played, and I owned a dancing school so I played music from all genres and all decades. My grandchildren on the other hand were neither exposed to nor interested in hearing my music. You are somewhere in the middle. You didn't grow up with it but you are loving it. Bing often insisted on having a diverse band. He wanted the best to play with him no matter the color. For other big band jazz from the era, I'd suggest Sing Sing Sing by Benny Goodman's orchestra, it's a banger. Also, Duke Ellington, Take the A Train, and Count Basie, April in Paris.

Love the reactions. Now that you have watched a clip from an old movie , go back to 1943 and watch the most amazing dance sequence ever filmed. Big band leader Cab Callaway sings and scats to the song Jumping Jive and then the Nicholas brothers dance a routine that will absolutely take your breath away. The whole thing is under 5 minutes long but anyone who sees it will remember it forever BTW. The dancing was done in 1 take as I believe the whole 5 minute sequence was .A whole band by with horns and singing and a mind blowing dance

'Satchmo' was a reference to Louis Armstrongs jawline - it was an abbreviation of 'Satchelmouth' - which many might consider an insult, Armostrong embraced it and it became his 'monicker'. :)

Louis Armstrong is probably still the single most important figure in the history of jazz.

I was raised during the 60s and 70s. I got to enjoy these tunes due to my mom playing this stuff all the time and I loved it then and still do.

When live American jazz was first heard in Europe, after the first world war; a French music critic described a singing voice that sounded "like It was ten thousand years old".
