You're not supposed to C-Clamp the rear piston. You can do that with front pads, rear pads are supposed to be rotated in. Thats why it has notches on the face of the piston.... Kinda cringed watching that. But it's a common mistake, don't feel terrible.
@@normalguysupercar Part of being a youtuber you make mistakes publicly. Most us made those mistakes when nobody saw us and then had to tell our wife how we saved her life because the callipers were so bad you had to buy and replace those too.... Practically saved her life ;).
@@SRTst Yup! I don't mind failing publicly. My career was in software start-ups so failing is a way of life. You learn, and move on. Better yet if you can teach others not to repeat the same mistakes.
@@normalguysupercar Remembah you're training, Grasshoppah....."Success has many fathers. Failure is an orphan". You couldn't count how many mistakes I've made. Some of us are secure enough to own up to them....and then there are those with such fragile egos, they'll NEVER admit to any failings. I just shattered an S&K ratchet yesterday (using it as a hammer. Not smart). Had it for decades!......I'm such a dumbass.
Your supposed to use a brake caliper little block that screws in the caliper instead of c clamping it in. You got lucky because sometimes they crack when c clamping it in
How many others were cringing when he did this with the C clamp.... The good news is semi-loaded calipers are relatively inexpensive - you'd have to add your own red paint though ;-)
As others have mentioned, it looks like this caliper piston is supposed to be rotated clockwise in to retract. Calipers like this usually incorporate the parking brake mechanism so it is different. I don't know if you damaged it.
Hey Dan. I enjoy watching the work on Meg's mini, as well. I also enjoy reading the comments on collapsing the caliper pistons. Next time use some channel locks, that should really bend people out of shape.
"NEAR DEATH CRASH WITH FIREBALL AND EXPLOSIVE TOTAL LOSS AVOIDED by changing BRAKE PADS in TIMELY MANNER!" Good job, sir... the only other item worth mentioning... if you've added brake fluid at some point before the pads are changed the level in the master cylinder will overflow as the pistons are pushed back in with the c-clamps. I always pop the hood and remove the master cylinder cap just in case the system isnt vented and check the level before retracting the pistons. In a pinch, you can remove excess fluid with a old windex pump sprayer
Yeah.....made that mistake with the pads on my Hyundai when I did the first pad replacement. When I saw the notches in the Mini's brake piston, I thought it was gonna be the type where you compress AND screw the piston back in at the same time (Nissan & Hyundai for example). Dodged a p.i.t.a. step right there. Great vid, Dan.
I assume you pop open the brake fluid reservoir before you force the piston down right? Good work and 15 mins (without interruption) is quick actually.
That’s crazy that that had to wear out that fast. I drive over Highway 17 through the mountains every day commuting into F250 and my glass 70,000 miles front and rear. I’ve been meaning to get a caliper compressor but I’ve always used a C clamp even on my BMW
HI Dan . Good video . To get caliper push back . You need to use a caliper turn back tool kit . It should come with a left and right tool . There on amazon .
Wtf are you doing? That piston needs to be turned as well as having pressure applied. You need a wind back tool 🤦♂️ also remove the brake reservoir cap, makes it easier to push pistons back
do you need a diagnostic tool to put the rear brake into service mode first? I'm gonna do this with my clubman but giving the car has electronic parking brake, I'm not sure if I can just use the wind back tool to rotate the piston in.
I think you meant ECS Tuning. Not NCS as you said in the video. ECS has a great customer service and have just about every part for BMW'S or in your case Mini's.
Hey NGS, good video. I applaud you for leaving in the pad install mistake. We're all human, right? On rotor thickness: wouldn't it be a good idea to mic the rotor at several spots for a more representative reading? I have a '15 Cooper S 4dr HT (F55) that only sees 4 to 6 HPDE track days a year yet it burns through pads, too.
since you lost your dear friend and your dog I feel that you are not joyous as usal, smile my friend!! Is it the case to love another dog? =) I missed something, why the 430 is still in your garage?
Im pretty sure those are the calipers which you are meant to rewind to push the piston back in, you cant just push it back, that was far too much pressure you were putting on the c clamp.
Ha figures that always happens, still cheaper doing it yourself. Do those pads and sliders not require any brake caliper grease? Good video though, keep them coming. That 348 major was a great series, we need to get Josh in some future episodes.
No, as long as you take care of a Mini and can find one that has everything done they are great. I pulled the trigger on a 2011 R56S that was totaled and rebuilt it. Then my dad bought an R53S and it has held up very well with a lot of modifications, it now has a cam, 550cc injectors, Miltek exhaust, Wilwood 6 piston brakes, and a bunch of other small stuff and its the most fun car I have ever driven!
I bought my 16-year-old daughter a red with black roof, John Cooper Works, Mini Cooper with black wheels, with an all-around air-dam package and a lot of carbon fiber trim for her first car because that is what she told me she would like. I called it driveway candy because it was so darn cute. She loved that car.... But after a long business trip, I come home and there was a brand new black shiny Honda Civic on the driveway and no Mini? I asked what happened to the Mini, thinking an accident, but thankfully that wasn't the case. My now 18-year daughter tells me, the Mini was too unreliable and she needed a car she could count on to start every morning. She had taken it back to the dealer several times for Timing Chain issues before those issues were declared a full-blown recall. But they could never seem to get it right. So my 18-year daughter decided to trade in the car of her dreams, the car she loved for something reliable and she bought a Civic, fully loaded of course. And drove the Civic round trip from Chicago to Los Angeles twice. We both still think about and miss the cool, little black over red Mini every time we see another Mini on the road, but she never regrets trading it in!!!!
Yup. A mutual friend pinged me last night and asked if it was him on Live PD that she had just seen. I then pinged Dan and he confirmed that he had just gotten pulled over 15 mins ago. Crazy world we live in now. He and I were wondering if any subscribers would also see him. :D (Not sure if they showed it, but he said he just got a warning)
Well I love to say "If you're not doing it twice, you're not doing it right!" But, now that THAT'S holding true through the 348 Saga and apparent in this video, I'm adding "If you piss people off, you're doing it correctly!" (Even though it may cost you some rear calipers in the future). Just make sure to do some research before replacing brakes on a car with an electronic parking brake. 👍
Thanks for this vid. I have the same brake setup on my i8. I also saw the comment on the c-clamp, so I'll use that advice. One suggestion: If you are replacing pads that often, buy them from FCPeuro. They have a lifetime guarantee on everything, meaning after you buy a part from them, once it wears out, buy a new part to replace it, send the old worn one back and they refund you 100%. They even do this for oil and filters! They sell OEM or aftermarket, so you're not getting sub-par parts. Apparently, that was different years ago, but they listened to customers and offer lifetime guarantee on everything they sell. I had only heard about this recently on bimmerpost, but that's where I'm going to start going for all my wear items. www.fcpeuro.com/page/lifetime-guarantee
See i do know something about cars! Haha. After i snapped 4 screwdrivers and bought the manual thats how i learned it. Lol i changed a 3000 job into a 100 dollar job for my friend with 3 kids and no money.
i cried a little when you sprayed brake cleaner on that nice painted caliper. now the finish is dull and gross. Just use a brush and some iron-x or jay leno wheel cleaner.
I really enjoy your content but honestly find the click bate stuff benith you. What was "Unsafe" and the comments about the engine being destroyed on the 348? When you posted that your 458 had been crashed into! It was obviously not good but... Nuff said. I still look forward to your stuff but in the long term you might loose peoples interest. Keep up the great work and whats with the 430 being back. Please not my intention to offend but just trying to be helpful... Dean
He explained in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EoVdlOdWtpA.html He felt he had no choice but to start "clickbaiting" the titles, otherwise the YT algo wasn't listing him as popularly. He hates it, but because everyone does it, if he doesn't his content just disappears into a black hole (for non-subscribers). The only way to get YT to feature him, thus giving him a chance for new subs, is to play along with their crappy algorithm game. :(
