I can tell you all about that push back in 1998, as a fellow Padres fan. It was the late 1990s. The ownership wants a new Stadium. The Q (Jack Murphy to me) was no longer seen as an adequate field. The Padres were considering moving to DC had they not gotten their wish. 1997 was a letdown year after winning the NL West the year before. They signed key vets to short term deals: Kevin Brown, Greg Vaughn. Hard to believe that it was Brown that was what they needed to anchor that staff which consisted of Ashby, Hitchcock, Hamilton and eventually Langston. Not exactly world beaters but a pretty good staff. Brown sealed the deal. The team had by far their best season and outplayed expectations only to get vaporized in the WS by arguably one of the greatest teams ever assembled. Nonetheless, the euphoria of winning in San Diego was intoxicating. Not too long after the season ended, the measure that would fund Petco Park was passed by the voters. Once it was passed, the Padres ownership got their wish and their plan had worked. They got their new stadium. Once the ink dried, they jettisoned nearly their entire roster leaving behind the bones and scraps for the buzzards. That was the last major push the Padres had, in hopes of getting a new stadium. Since then, they hadn’t come close to being a legitimate contender, even during the mid-2000s, where the NL West was weak and the Padres were the best of a bad situation. And after Tony Gwynn Jr. knocked us out of the one game wild card in 2007, nothing has gone right ever since until these past few years. It’s wonderful to see them finally be competitive and be jockeying for a possible WS Title. I would be overjoyed to see them hoist a Title meanwhile the Judases rot in LA still in search of a Conference Title in this century, much less a SB win and just become the Detroit Lions of the AFC. One can hope 🤞🏽

@@daveatkins3796 thanks for that. I was born in ‘99 and my dad looks with fondness on that ‘98 season. He doesn’t talk about of those details but I knew that was the team that built Petco. I grew up going to Petco. Petco and T Mobile (I’ve lived in Seattle for over 10 years now but still spend a lot of time in SD) parks are practically the two homes of my childhood. Padres were my first love for sports. This is the best they’ve been my whole life and when I see the older fans excited this season it gets me pumped up for what we might accomplish. It’s ashamed Tony couldn’t live to see the team as it is now but we’re pouring one out for him when we win it and it’s wonderful that Jr sounds just like him while calling the games

The Super Sonics haven’t been in Seattle for longer than that and Seattle still desperately wants them back, even if it’s an expansion team the hatred for OKC will continue and run deep. Not only because of the whole stadium initiative, but a good chunk of that team was juiced out of their minds. Nonetheless good memories. Your Dad must be like me in that he’s probably a long time suffering fan. But I’ll tell ya what, if they should ever win it all, it will make it that much more sweeter. That’s cool that you were in Seattle. Nice place, especially during the summer months. I’m just like yourself in where I grew up in another sports town in addition to San Diego. It was Philadelphia. While the Padres are my Number One team (was really torn about the NLCS), I do love the Phillies because I grew up watching the games while they had the original broadcasters of Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn. Plus, I went to a few games back when they were still at Veterans Stadium. I also became an Eagles fan while in my time in Philadelphia. Nepotism also had a large hand in that, as well. I haven’t set foot in Citizens Bank Park yet, but I’ve been in Petco a few times. Great field but I still love the old Murph and Vet. Just the older stadiums had character and it gave the team its reputation. Just like you have with Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and Dodger Stadium (much as I hate to admit to the last one lol)

Though you could say kahwis 2019 shot against us was like the championship since they went on to beat the warriorswith ease

I think we knew the Jays needed to make some changes after the way that WC series vs the Mariners ended. Hopefully both the roster moves & acquisitions, along with the newly-redesigned field dimensions, result in a payoff for the Jays in 2023. Lord knows we need to erase the memory of that collapse vs the Mariners from our minds.

Honestly these fun rosters have the tendency to become insufferable if they actually get good. This is coming from a Jays fan who had to watch an bunch of immature prima donnas all last season, and it fucking cost them big time. (I’m not saying this will happen, it’s just a possibility from personal experience)

They're not 500 yet unless everything goes right, which wouldn't lead them anywhere anyway, but I honestly think they're a season or two off from competing for the playoffs, and possibly a season or two after that they'll be something real.

The O’s overplayed as much as the Red Sox played under their true talent. Baltimore’s front office was wise to be cautious and quiet this winter.

@@codenamelarry6518 I’m a Pirates fan, I know exactly what you mean unfortunately Really, it depends all on whether Rizzo is fired and (if so) what kind of guy replaces him. Rizzo clearly has a plan for this rebuild he’s already started, so canning him would just be ownership indulging in “fan service,” offering a scapegoat for the inevitable teardown. If he is sacked, look carefully at who replaces him. If it’s somebody from inside the organization, that’s a good sign. If it’s somebody who’s also clearly dedicated to the rebuild, that’s also good. But if he’s replaced with someone who has a mandate to quickly get back into contention…well, the 2020s are going to be as bad as the 2010s were good.

@@warlordofbritannia That's good advice. I think Rizzo will most likely be canned to the Nats underachieve in a season where they have expectations. But with ownership currently in limbo, it's hard to predict the path of this team over the next few years.

@@codenamelarry6518 Ledner, I seem to recall, never meant to actually hang on to the team for more than a couple of years after the move to Washington; he was supposed to be a caretaker owner at first. Definitely will be interesting to see how his heirs handle things over the next few.
