This week, the alert level was raised at a volcano which produced the 2nd largest explosive eruption of the 21st century. This occurred at Chile's Puyehue-Cordón Caulle volcano, which produced a VEI 5 eruption on the same order of magnitude as the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helens. Elsewhere, in Indonesia, the aftermath of the Ruang volcano is much more apparent, and as activity further decreased, its alert level was lowered. Meanwhile, in Tonga and Vanuatu, a new volcanic eruption commenced in each country. This video will discuss these stories and list the 49 volcanoes which are currently erupting around the planet.

Is it just me, or does Ruang look _really_ steep on the upper slopes, approaching or exceeding 45 degrees? It almost has the look of a giant lava dome. Combined with the large collapse scare on nearby Tahulandang, it really makes me wonder what the risk of flank collapse is like for this volcano.

Ruang reminds me of Bulusan - they resemble each other and Bulusan is a lava dome complex.

Your channel is the best geological one on the net. Thank-you for your brilliant insights, but there's just one tiny problem: When the video is in portrait, please just put plain black each side. The blurry bits of the video make it unwatchable.

Ruang is over, but awu still waiting (idk when this will happen) The most notable change i can observe in the last few days was the increase in number of fumarole. It's height is also increasing from 10m above the lava dome to 30 - 50 m

Not really, it seems like it's just decreasing. From monitoring, white smoke was only occasionally seen and volcanic earthquakes were still detected, although in much smaller quantities
@jakeaurod
@jakeaurod Месяц назад
The Action Lab recently posted a video about gas and pressure and the position of an air bubble in the column and mentioned that this was also applicable to volcanoes. The experiment showed that counter-intuitively, moving a bubble up the column results in higher pressure in the entire column, because potential gravitational energy is converted into pressure. I'm curious if you saw it and if you had any thoughts on it and how it relates to volcanic phenomena.
