Weird but effective 😂
I use whatever I have lying around the house but you can also purchase tension rings. Because of the way I hold my yarn (second method) tension rings don’t work for me.
For the second method, you could really use anything tube shaped as a yarn holder. I’ve used a silicon straw, pvc pipe, and one of my kid’s toys lol.
Have you tried either of these crochet hacks??

Lol I'm gonna try this. Honestly I never knew how I hold my yarn is not as popular until I started to watch tutorials online and people always seem to wrap the yarn around their fingers in all these insane ways. To me that seems crazy like just hold it but I guess I'm the crazy one 🤣

@@BagsbyBento I used to use a similar technique as the toilet paper but it was the tube from a pen lol I used them when working on the hat looms too 😅 the toilet paper tube makes way more sense though you can make it as big or small as you need!

Thank you, the fingers on my left hand are limited to how far I can curl them inward. I wanted to crochet again, but found it difficult to to hold the yarn under my fingers. This idea is fantastic. I’m going to try it thank you so much.

the toilet paper roll is actually genius!! I feel like it would help me a lot, because I hold the yarn a bit weird, so this would help with the yarn burn I tend to get on my palm.

I'll try the toilet paper thing because that's how I crochet and my pinky hurts

What if the problem isn't how I hold the yarn but how I hold my project? My left thumb, the hand I hold yarn with, is starting to give me a lot of pain, but it has nothing to do with the yarn feeding through my fingers. I hold my project sort of "pinched" with my thumb and middle finger, with ring and pinky supporting. (The index is stuck out feeding the yarn.) With the thumb constantly extended and contracted in a "pinch" shape/hold, the muscles in the pad at the base of my thumb get very fatigued, then start cramping. And now it just hurts all the time. I am NOT pinching or gripping tightly, it's actually a very loose hold! It's the POSITION of the thumb , plus slight tension/contraction for grip, for extended periods, that's causing the problem. But I don't know how else to hold up the project so I can work on it? 🤷🏽‍♀️ What is the best or healthiest way to hold your project that doesn't cause hand pain or fatigue?

I’m a complete beginner and this is how I hold my yarn and work and am also experiencing the pain you describe expect it’s at the base of my middle finger, not thumb. I hope we are both able to find some relief or tips on hope to prevent this!

I do the same thing, I can’t figure out another way to hold it.

dang who knew there are so many ways to hold it. My pinky started cramping the other day while I was gaming and I couldn't for the life of me figure out why until I started crocheting again this morning and it dawned on me its taking its toll xD time to find alternative ways! I am gonna try both of those and see which one gives me the right tension thanks!!

I could never understand how anyone can wrap a yarn around a finger, because mine just tightens and stops moving. I hold my yarn the second way, but because I hold the yarn so loosely I've never had any problems with my hand, not even when crocheting with garden twine.. Perhaps it would hurt if I used a yarn designed for scrubbies, so it's good to keep these tips in mind, just in case.

I never thought to use electrical tape. My hubby is also an electrician, so there's always a roll of tape laying around.

My problem is that I hold my work with the thumb and pointer then stick out the middle finger and hold the yarn with the last two fingers as I crochet

What is that spongy thing at the end of the crochet? It seems comfortable. I would love to pick knitting/crochet up again but I can’t hold anything with my ring finger and pinkie of both hands.

Stretch before and after. Support your arms and wrists at a table or with a pillow in your lap. Massage and ice also help!

Try standing at a tall counter while you crochet sometimes! Just moving positions regularly can help. Also supporting your hands with a pillow on your lap can help the “hunch” 😂

Lots of rest, ice and working on changing the way you hold your hook! There are thumb braces as well!
