The Sarlala descent is one of the most unique and challenging descents I've ever ridden, dropping from 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level down to the ocean at 0 meters. The road conditions are constantly changing, from beautiful hot mix to washed-out dirt and sticky mud, with multiple landslides, missing sections of road, and even a waterfall crossing.
Cycling in Timor-Leste is relatively undiscovered, with a small but strong local cycling community in Dili. While the road conditions make life difficult for locals, they present a unique and challenging opportunity for adventurous cyclists, particularly those on gravel bikes.
Riding here requires respect for the local communities and a willingness to embrace the unexpected.
