Scales vs Chord tones. In this jazz guitar lesson I teach you the right way to improvise with chord tones with just a little bit of music theory. There can be a bit of controversy here. Some say SCALES are best for how to improvise jazz. Others say focusing in on CHORD TONES the best method to improvise jazz. The truth is all the jazz masters that came before us didn't think scales very often. It was a strategic way of placing chord tones within the measure and linking them together with approach notes, enclosures and chromaticism, to add color, spice, and excitement to their jazz lines. In other words, it's learning how to use the "wrong notes" correctly.
I like to think of it as 80-85% notes of the chords and the rest scales.

Thank you very much for your video! The most important thing for me is that chord tones are not starting points but ending points or target notes. This is also very helpful for me as a saxophonist.

Hey there, I’m so glad you understand and got something from it. I’ve spent the last 20+ years studying jazz lines and learning how to create and play strong, good sounding lines that will stand on their own even if no one is comping changes. Chord tones is how you do it. Even if you hit 80-90 % of this approach, your lines will sound so much less “hit and miss.” So glad I could help you out!

@@JazzRockswithAdam I've been asking myself for years why my jazz lines sound rather trivial, even though I use the right scales. Putting chord tones on the heavy beats is now the right way for me. But at the moment it still requires a lot of concentration. It will probably take a while before I find it easier.

Hi Adam. This is excellent information. To make sure I understand this, are you saying to use the cord tones as 1) your guide and 2) as the notes you land on for the downbeat, and then add notes either above or below the chord tones as passing notes - and then resolve on the downbeat with the chord tones?
@JazzRockswithAdam
@JazzRockswithAdam 3 месяца назад
Essentially you got it. But it doesn’t always have to be a downbeat. Upbeats are great.

I've played jazz for over 20 years, and my solos still sound clumsy. I understand scales and chords, and I understand enclosures. The latter has helped, but it still feels like there's way too much thinking as I process what chord I'm on and what notes I can use. I'm not sure how to get past that to get everything sounding as natural as speech.
@JazzRockswithAdam
@JazzRockswithAdam 2 месяца назад
For me I find it’s less thinking than scales. I only have to think one or two notes to target at any given time and allows me to freely improvise anything in between. I find it freeing. That way I can listen in a way to play phrases, ideas, instead of passages that nearly all sound the same. It does take work in the beginning to get used to thinking this way. It probably won’t happen in a day. Thanks for your comment and for watching!

Hello there. Congrats for the lessons. Just signed to your channel. I'm an amateur musician. And old guy! Learn for fun. But you play fast. An advice: play slower while *teaching*. As a musician, you can play at speed of light. It does not impress the amateur. The effect is reverse. It inhibits him. We, amateurs, want to learn basics, not speed. I do not have figures, but I bet most of the people that subscribes are not pro musicians. While pros look for "what this guy is doing?", amateurs look for "what can I learn from him?" Sorry for the comment, but I had to say it. Keep on and many thanks for the lessons. Have o good new 2024.

I'm trying to narrow down what part of NYC you reside... I'm an expat living in the Pacific Northwest these days. I miss the food (P-I-Z-Z-A as well as being able to eat the best from all over the world, without living the city and its boroughs)... but not the rising rent prices. For those of you wondering, but what about Barry Harris--his method was WAY MORE than scales. He loved talking about triads as well. Unfortunately, there's a lot of misinformation and superficial knowledge spread on RU-vid about Barry Harris. Many latch on to "the Barry chromatic scale" or "half steps" and stop there. Barry Harris found a cohesive way to teach melody, harmony, rhythm--you'll find it, if you look deep enough. Or... find a teacher who studied and/or played with Barry Harris. One piece of blasphemy to ponder. If the strong beats in Western music are 1 and 3, then why do we tap our feet on 2 and 4? The common response is "because you have to feel 1 and 3 in your body." That never worked for me. Dancers feel 1 and 3 with their lower body and 2 and 4 with the upper body. Barry Harris used to teach tapping your foot on 1 and 3 on one foot and 4 on the other. The most important beat is the downbeat, and I could never feel that downbeat confidently with 2 and 4. Different strokes for different folks, but I think that the "2 and 4" as godsend was more damaging to my musical development than helpful--options are key.
@JazzRockswithAdam
@JazzRockswithAdam 6 месяцев назад
Ah, the eternal struggle of finding the best pizza outside of NYC! I feel you on that one. I live in Kensington, Brooklyn. Why we tap/clap on 2 & 4 is because they are the weak beats. It propels everything forward. Kind of like syncopation with emphasis on the up beats. The weak beats. I agree with Barry. Tapping your foot at least on beat 1, helps keep you grounded. Put the 2 and 4 in the notes. The video didn't have anything to do with Barry's method. And I agree, there's more to it than scales or the chromatic approach. This is just a taste of how I look at it. A sort of starter. Thanks for sharing.
@pickinstone

@@JazzRockswithAdam You speaking about resolving to chord tones on 1 and 3 of the measure reminded me of Barry Harris, and you used his photo in a previous video--so my connection wasn't random ;) Just starting a dialogue--not a criticism. I already subscribe to your channel. I have to channel my inner English teacher and write sentences instead of essays for my comments--that is definitely true. When you are passionate about music and literature, sometimes those modalities blend together in messy convoluted ways... Apologies if my comment came off as standoffish.
