Hey Chuck, regarding the farrowing pens and the issue with loss of strength removing the end pieces; why not use a jigsaw and cut out a window shaped piece which you could then attach hinges to so that you could open them in warmer weather. Then have a latch to close them for colder weather and so that the pigs could be contained also, if needed.
If more shade is needed you could screw 2 x2 or round branches between the two farrowing pens and make a roof between them covered with metal roofing you may have lying around. Shade reduces animal stress yielding a better quality carcass!!
I like to see the shade for farm animals. Ya know hail lightening high wind. So many homesteaders don't think of it. One farmer stretched out tough orange plastic on 4 post low to the ground , height of animal. Great vid ❤😊
I'm doing the same thing fixing up shade areas. We got more animals than normally It was a 108 to day but Sunday will be 112 and it goes up from there.
I would get about 6 tee posts, taller the better and drive the in a rectangular pattern, like poles for a pole barn. Maybe like 8' wide by 16' long and get whatever is cheap, a blue tarp maybe and tie it to the top of the tee post making a shade. It needs to be oriented with the longer side parallel with the sun travel, east and west so that some of the shaded ground never has sunshine on it at any time of day.
I'm recently watching your video, and have been studying a lot about rotational and multi species grazing and I am having a hard time understanding how pigs fit into the system. Thinking maybe a centrally located shade/feeding/watering/ mud wallow area. Fencing maybe in a wheel type of design with the central, some what permanent area always having pigs on it. Maybe you could have some, like 12 ft wide lane going to a grass area! Don't let me dissuade you from what you are doing. I see it is an intensely managed operation, which is unusual in these times, but I think you can earn a good living that way. I do see that what you are doing is a return to what a lot of small farms and the local town people done to survive prior to wwIi and the depression era.
The lower side of those shades you have should be removed for better air flow. I don't know how you are watering those pigs but if you could put some water in a spot so they can get muddy that will allow them to get a layer of mud on their skin and the lay in the shade, that makes them good for 100°f
Dzięki za dzielenie się wiedzą za porady i wskazówki 😉. Mam takie pytanie w jakim wieku zabieracie prosiaki od matek i czy to jest też dzień kastracji?
He’s been gone for a couple of weeks on vacation and decided to cut back to part time and work on some other projects. He’s still around just not as much.
