Steve Jones not only held the British Marathon record but he also broke the world record! The shorts are just fine. Have never got used to the trousers that most runners wear these days 🙂

In 1984 Jones won Chicago in 2:08, he was sponsored by Reebok.

Some hilarious commentary on this. People were at peace in Thatcher's Britain were they? This race was going on in the same year as the Miner's Strike. A year before the Tottenham, Brixton and Handsworth riots. This park is literal a stones throw from Handsworth! Loved the footage mind, Steve Jones was a beast.

Yes talk about rose coloured spectacles. lol I remember there was a series of 10k races for a couple of years, i could be wrong. The guy how came second was Colin Rieltz number 1, he came third in the World championship steeplechase the previous year.

Steve Jones World & British marathon record holder - Chicago 1984, Birmingham HM WR in 1985 . Allister Hutton won London in 1990. Colin Reitz was best known as a steeplechaser and won bronze in 83 worlds and 86 commonwealth

Great job and thanks.steves club was Newport harriers.his mile p.b was 4.01 he didn't run many and probably was more capable than that time suggests.i remember him dropping some 4.40 miles in the London marathon and even a 4.38 I think.tremendouse athlete.best cross country 3rd in the world cross country.great video on RU-vid of him in 10.k track race

Merci

Yes it was Alistair Hutton. And Athe other chap was Colin Reitz (pronounced Reetz). He was an international steeplechaser. And the running shoes were not quite as bad as crisp packet thin back then! Though not much energy return for sure!

I was alive back then and I remember those years very fondly. You are correct. Things weren’t perfect but people had general respect for each other as well themselves.

I don't know what country you was living, but it couldn't of been Thatcher's Britain. It was a terrible decade, full of industrial woe, police brutality and riots. And we are still suffering from that right wing regime's legacy today. But generally speaking, things are even worse now.

I competed around the same era as Steve and I think he ran in Reebok "Paris" racers at one time, which, as described in the video were typical of the type of footwear used back then, I don't think I ever saw him wear a watch, just ran it as he felt it, this particular race is a great example of how he ran, seriously strong and gutsy from the off. A brilliant runner and a real gent. #legend

Was it that great then? Miners strike wasnt good for 1000s of people. Im 63 and id say that generally society was more cohesive then but it wasnt all a bed of roses.

The depth of talent in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s was exceptional. This race was packed with international standard runners. They all sone on road, track and country.

Steve Jones was a brilliant runner during an era when the UK had so many greats including Seb Coe, Steve Ovett, Steve Cram, Dave Moorcroft & Peter Elliott. Loved watching the sport as a kid in those days. Those shorts though are ghastly.

Huh Jones, winner of the second London Marathon and Allister Hutton, the 1990 winner. Steve Jones won the London in 1985. There are a few other faces here I remember but can’t put names to now.
