In the waning days of the 2022 season, Albert Pujols and Aaron Judge both accomplished individual feats that happen only once in a blue moon. How did they get here? In this video, we're going to look at the unique paths these players took to reach their respective milestones, and why it makes baseball one of the most rewarding viewing experiences.

Another thing that I say when people ask why I like sports that is very similar to yours is that sports are the only kind of storytelling that are unpredictable and without expectations from narrative conventions. That to me makes the big sentimental moments feel even bigger. I'm a sentimental guy, I cry at a lot of movies, but as a writer I also know that plenty of those moments are become somewhat predictable with enough media experience. But in sports, they organically happen, and more importantly, don't always happen. Think how many greats have career totals that fall just short of some milestone round number. Bonds and A-Rod both got denied storybook endings (Bonds's last at-bat ended in a routine flyout at the warning track, A-Rod ended with 696 career home runs), why was Pujols any different? You could say something about karma or just desserts or how cheaters never win, but real life doesn't play by those rules, much as we may wish it does. Plenty of athletes have "bet on themselves" only to have terrible seasons after turning down a contract. We got to cheer for Pujols and Judge while knowing there was a very good chance for things to end in disappointment. When I first saw Albert's home run, I cried. It was emotional even as just a general fan of baseball, I can't imagine what it was like for someone who was a Cardinals fan back in the 2000s watching The Machine play some of the best baseball of his generation.

So happy that Pujols got to play his last season with the Cardinals and get to 700 career home runs. He will be a first ballot HOF for sure especially with all the statistical milestones he reached. The title of the video might be right as the way the game is nowadays I see it very likely that 700 career home runs or even 600 career home runs might not be reached ever again. We might see some players reach 500 career home runs but I just don't see a player getting to 600 career home runs or even 700 home runs again. The same can be said for 3,000 hits as we could see a couple players reach that milestone but we don't see players getting to 200 hits a season as we use to. The same could also be said for 500 career doubles, 600 career doubles, 500+ career stolen bases, 2,000 career RBI and 3,000 career strikeouts. The point is that the way the game is right now we should appreciate when a player reaches a big career milestone even more than we use to because who knows if we will see that milestone reached again.
