It's a bit scary to get another player in that is huge on paper but can outright disappear. I think what the Mavs need are some players who are absolutely reliable and consistent in their performances and some proper defensive additions.

At best this could end up being Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics. A chance for Klay to come in and revitalize his career in a lessor role as the third option. Also who knows, perhaps not having to expend as much energy as the secondary playmaker on the team will let him be more active on defense as well because Klay can play good defense. Which is very different from Luka and Kyrie who just aren't good at defense. And that is what I'm hoping for him.

The one word I would *not* use to describe 2024 Klay Thompson is "dependable" His ceiling right now is, what, Kyle Korver? I'm legitimately worried about CP3 feeding Wemby every game (or as many as CP3 can appear in barring age/injury). One of the greatest passers ever with the soon-to-be lob king, and also a great coach/mentor to Wemby for everything else. He's easily going to take Wemby to the next level and the rest of the league is gonna be in trouble 😬

Honestly it comes down to what is the realistic expectations this season..Dallas just came from the finals so adding Klay you would think they at least make it back to the conference again..But if I’m being real adding Klay doesn’t bring a title to Dallas in the end game

I expect Klay to average around 17 pts and shoot around 40% from deep. As a Curry fan I wish him nothing but the best. I just always hoped the Splash Bros would only ever wear the one jersey together.

As A Warriors fan who watches all their games and follows breakdowns of said games etc let me point out a few things. Klay is not someone who has been looking to take a step back and seek a more relaxed less pressure filled role. He actively fought the attempts of the team to go with other younger options in the starting lineup. When Kerr did eventually bench him and stopped going to him in the 4th to close games he was pissed beyond belief. He was angry when they extended Poole, then Wiggins then Dray and not him. But he has never accepted that the injuries have changed him forever as a player. He has posted stuff on social media which clearly shows he still thinks Game 6 Klay is who he is. Putting aside the defence end where it's obvious he's all but completely washed even offensively he struggles for a variety of reasons some physical and some mental. The root of the problem is that the injuries to both legs have completely taken away his athleticism. He has no lateral quickness so he can't get the same separation on his jump shot nor the same lift consistently when he does shoot. He doesn't move as much or as effectively off the ball and almost never cuts to the basket anymore. If he plays too many minutes or too many games over a stretch he Klanks his wide open shots as well because he relies on his legs for his jump shot. Kerr and the team were babying and coddling him too much as it was and even a players only meeting last season only temporarily got him focused and playing the right way. He was an integral part of 3 titles but has actually been a locker room cancer since he came back from the injuries and is a big part of why Poole is no longer on the team and why the growth of the young players has been stunted. It's not all bad though. He'll get easier shots with the Mavs than he has had on the Warriors in years. I hope the Kidd and his staff have watched the tape and encourage Klay to focus on using his gravity to free up the offense. The only bright spot this past year for him actually being effective on the court was the 3 man game he developed with Trayce. Klay would draw 2 and dump it in to a rolling TJD for wide open dunks and flip shots. Gafford and Lively should feast in that same action. Eventually though i suspect the Mavs will find they have to bench him. His defence is so poor that he has to be red hot to win his minutes and actually have a positive impact. But if they can get him to buy in and go back to at least trying to do some dirty work then they will have achieved something Kerr hasn't been able to in years.

am a mavs fan , and i think ur thought process is on the nail. our consurn is D for sure becz we are trying to make defence our identity , klay is not the defender he once was but he still better then many and u bet he can share that knowldge with the team and i hope so. my pt is even if klay have off nights on both ends we need luka and ky to improve their defence becz they sure did last year. i hope luka get s in shape that will help him for sure

As a Warriors fan, we got the best years out of Klay and now he's washed up and gone to another team. Kind of like when Michael Jordan went to the Wizards. I'm sad to see him go just because I remember all the amazing things he did as a Warrior, but at the same time, we replaced him with a younger, better version, and cheaper, in Buddy Hield.

WIth how we supported Kyrie coming to Dallas and really let him shine, I think we can do the same for Klay.

honestly dont see how adding klay at this stage of his career is gonna help luka. what we need is to get kyrie to play at his highest level, getting better 2 way players, and reinforce the paint. what would one more shooter that is not consistent and cant really defend anymore do?

Honestly the most interesting trade to me as a Nuggets fan has been KCP to the Magic. Finding somebody to replicate his production is gonna be a hell of a task unless Christian Braun can really step up. We’ve been losing depth consistently since that championship run, and we really need to see some significant development from Braun and Pwat if we’re gonna continue to be a threat.

This will be a Ray Allen 2.0 scenario. Klay is on a "Revenge" tour against the Western Conference. Jason Kidd will figure out a way to get that lock-down defense clickin earlier in the season. D-Mavs will be WCF favorites again.

Johnny, I couldn’t agree more with your take. But I do have to say this to add on or elaborate the mavs need to utilize ball movement and have that Jason Kidd ask passing ability and play making on the perimeter passing and also lob city threat with lively and Washington. I believe if this team can utilize spacing figuring out lobs in the crunch.

The big thing for Klay is ego. He got upset when he played bad and got benched, a guy declining who still thinks he's "the guy" is one of the worst things to add to a team with championship aspirations coughcough Westbrick coughcough. If he comes to accept he's not who he was and shoves down his pride for the sake of winning then that'll be great for Dallas. I get the feeling he won't though and that's why I think the Lakers dodged a bullet and am not upset anymore he didn't come here.

They didnt replace DJJ with Klay, they replaced him with Naji who, on paper at least, looks even better on defense. Klay ie the THJ replacement except he can actually shoot. Grimes is the Josh Green replacement. Dallas literally upgraded with every single trade they made. I doubt Kidd would be short sighted enough to try to force a Luka, Kyrie AND Klay lineup, Klay can be given good minutes and come off the bench like they do with the Lively/Gafford setup.

I compare Klay more to Brooklyn era Ben Simmons 😂. Instead of being that last piece to get Dallas a ring, I see this nuking their chemistry and getting them bounced in the first round.

They need defense in the second unit and a big man. If they get those this off season they right back in the finals imo

Dallas definitely improved this offseason IMO. Marshall replaces DJJ, Klay replaces Hardaway jr., Grimes replaces Green. Klay's just the offensive cherry on top, it's Marshall & Grimes that will make that roster work defensively.

Luka misses out on 5-7 assists a game from just wide open misses. Luka was the second leading assist man in the league. Klay will come in as 40% 3 point shooter. You wont be able to double or triple Luka anymore.

He might secretly be relieved that he'll be a 3rd option, because being a second guy in a system like Golden State IMO would get wearying after a while. 34 years old is not 24 years old. Mileage adds up not only physically but mentally. Plus look who's ahead of him on the floor...Luca and Kyrie. I'd take that.

Good video, Jonny. I admit that I had a lot of doubts. This is because of how he struggled last season, especially with the 0-10 game. You make some great points though. He can still benefit the Mavs offensively and the stats for his last 20 games is a good argument in favor of helping Dallas. After thinking about it some more, I think he will be a decent 3rd option. I believe he will help Dallas improve to some extent, especially since he'd be able to lift some of the load off of Kyrie and Luka (and I agree with you there). I too disagree with the comparisons to Shaq joining the Celtics. With that said, I think that he isn't a game changer either and that while he will improve Dallas to an extent, his impact will be more modest. I don't think Klay will be in the closing unit for every playoff game, because of the need for better perimeter defense. I think in a playoff series Kidd will interchange Klay, Naji, and Grimes, depending on the match-up.

They are not replacing DJJ with Klay, they are replacing DJJ with Naji, THJ with Klay, and Green with Grimes. Klay is also taking a relatively small contract even as a pure shooter, not 3-and-D. THJ was getting paid more than him.

I like the Bridges to Knicks move more than the Klay to Mavs move. Believe it to be more impactive. Interesting enough, big question to me is, will the Mavs have an easier time replacing their defensive ace Jones, or the Knicks replacing their big man Hartenstein?

Derrick Jones Jr has always been underrated role player and this proves it. Klay does not even provide the consistent shooting that he used to anymore coming back from injury, let alone his solid defense during his prime. Derrick is still good in both of these plus being a fierce slashing and interior presence, and choosing to cut him to get klay is not going to turn out like how everyone suspects.

They SHOULD be better. A lot of Klay's issues tend to be when he's forced to manufacture offense for himself or the team, where his injuries show the toll they've taken, like on defense. That won't be a problem in Dallas. He's third fiddle, not second. People act like Klay wasn't a 40% 3p shooter last year. Like he didn't average just shy of 20 a game. As for the defense, for one, they really came out a wash overall. Their starting 5 D will be worse, their bench D will be better. Did people forget that their lack of D is nothing new? Despite getting clowned for their D over and over and over guess what? They kept beating teams.

Klay is not a good signing. They lost their only perimeter defender and replaced him with a guy who will be totally washed within the next 12-18 months.

You completely forgot about Naji Marshall which replaces DJJ and not klay. Klay replaces brickaway, which was horrible on both ends. Defense will not be elite but it also won't be worse than what they had this season - top defense in the league in the last 20 games of the season, and also won them some games in the first rounds of the playoffs

The bigger story is that the Warriors got Buddy Hield for $9 million a year, while Klay was paid $16 million a year... and at this point, Hield is better than Klay. In other words, the Warriors upgraded while saving money. I've always been a big fan of Klay, but last year the only word I would use to describe his play was... TRASH! He deserved to get benched, and the Warriors made a mistake when they put him back in the starting lineup, and they paid the price.

Me personally I see this as an B+ A- move you get a guy in klay thompson who can give you 20 points per game on really good efficiency help take off the offensive load from luka and kyrie which was a huge weakness of theirs in this finals I feel with the lessened offensive burden luka can play okay - good defense I know he has it in him and so does kyrie
