Watching you cleaning those fish makes me smile, 50 years ago I would fish for panfish with my Grandpa. We would catch 50 or more a day on the farm, and come home and clean them, than fry them up. Good Days!

This was important info to share, especially from a young guy. I grew up bass fishing in So Cal, I am 62 now and fish many days a week. Growing up ? I fished salt water all summer. I have been a multi species fisherman my whole life. Largies, smallies, spots, flathead, stripers, wiper, Blues, Lake trout.. Anyway, no matter how big your love is for a particular species ? Burn out is real, like you said, keep the fire stoked by fishing other things. Sorry, long winded, but, you touched on an important subject. 🙏. Stay safe

I dont dislike crappie, but I do agree they arent the best tasting fish. I much prefer bluegill over crappie. I know a lot of people shy away from the Bream because of all the bones, but if you can brave all those little bones, its a much better tasting fish than crappie. The meat is firm and flakey and it is this sweetness to it that I cant describe. Maybe they taste different in different parts of the country, but I love them. Bass is also a good tasting fish that people dont usually eat, and if they did eat it they wont talk about it. I primarily a sport angler, but from time to time I will take a couple bass to eat. If I foul hook a bass in such a way I know it probably wont live, or it swallows the hook, its going home with me to the skillet. There are also times, where I just cant find the bigger bass and just catching a bunch of 1-2 pounders all day. As long as they are legal length I will take a couple to eat. You are not hurting the fishery by taking a couple bass here and there, as long as you are doing it conservatively.

Bro, I am so glad you made this video. You are 1000% correct! Crappie is not the best tasting fish at all. It cooks up mushy just like you said and the meat has no flavor. Bluegill is by far the best tasting pan fish, followed by redear and I don’t really care for largemouth or smallmouth bass. I have eaten wiper before and I don’t like him either. To me, the best tasting freshwater fish is definitely walleye and sauger! Here’s a little tip though, if you freeze the crappie filets after cleaning the fish in a zip lock bag with water once you unthaw and cook, they cook up much more firm, I mean much more! So try freezing your crappie filets before cooking them fresh after cleaning them and I assure you they will cook up more firm.

Other than kokanee, I generally catch and release, BUT it blows me away all the hate that keeping fish gets on social media...especially bass. The dumb thing about this is that tournaments kill WAY more fish than recreational fishermen keeping a few for the table, so the hypocrisy is insane.

Caught and ate a lot of bream as a kid at my grandparents house. That was mainly what we fished for except for a little while in the spring and caught Sand Bass (white bass). I especially liked catching Red Ear, just a lot bigger in the lakes we fished. Most of that fishing was either Lake Wright Patman or Elliot Reservoir in East Texas. We never fished for Bass, so until 2020 when I got a place on Lake Fork and bought my first boat I didn’t really fish for Bass. I was 62 in 2020, so Bass fishing is still a challenge for me and one good bite tends to be a good day but on Fork that one can be a good one. While my wife sits on our dock with Night Crawlers and catches a little bit of everything. I love landing a 5lb plus Bass and being on the water is really relaxing so I’m in search of Monster Bass and sometimes grab a spinning rod and play on the dock for fun.

Me; not into throwing fish back. Undersize, yes. Out of season, yes. But in season, keeper size, yes I'm keeping them. I'm fishing to eat, to feed my family. Trout, crappie, brim, catfish, striper, surf perch....We like them all. Nothing wrong with keeping fish as long as you're doing it within the law.

Here’s a video idea…come up to Minnesota and target walleyes. I respect your fishing IQ and think it would be fun to watch how you’d strategize the attack, kind of as a clean slate. Plus, there’s fantastic bass fishing here, smallies and largemouth as well as my favorite target species in my region, the leech lake strain muskies! Just a thought…

I have limited time to fish between working long hours and having a family at home. A good day fishing for me is 6 fish in about 1 hr of bank fishing. Did just get a boat so i do plan to spend more time on the water this year but i do keep up on fishing for all species from panfish to crappie, bass, striper, walleye, and catfish. Working right next the river i take my lunch breaks to fish gar, drum, and bass on the river. My mind has had to soak up so much information for fishing from lakes to ponds and rivers during high water and low water times of the year. I have outfished tournament guys on their homebodies of water but i think it is due to how many different bodys I learn at different times and circumstances so ive become adaptable and as you said intentional throughout the year. I even fish in negative temperatures and have learned where to find a few fish during those days though they are toughest for me. We eat alot vrim here too. We do lemon pepper or lemon juice and tobasco sauce on ours and bake it.

I would’ve lost my mind and gone crazy if I didn’t start fishing for the perch and bluegill and crappie in our lake because the bass are very few and far between. My finless skills have increased dramatically. And sometimes my lake is perfect for top water, crappie, and bluegill action, which is awesome. I can’t say that I have a favorite freshwater fish. I love them all, but if forced, I might have to go with catfish.

Do King Salmon count if they're caught during the spawn? If so then thats my favorite. Close second is wild trout. Bluegill are amazing too. Just like Mark D, when they're fried the tail is my favorite part. But when it comes to keeping fish, this is a nuanced discussion. If everyone begins keeping their daily limits for all fish they catch, then our fisheries will get depleted rapidly. I do agree with selective harvest though. Keep a couple schoolie bass for the fryer (they're not my favorite but they ARE good and much better when they come out of clean water). Just dont keep every single one, and PLEASE don't keep the big ones!

Love crappie to eat. Also love bluegill but they have a bit firmer meat and I don’t like it quite as much because of that (which I guess is the opposite of you, but that is all good-different strokes and all of that). But I have always loved LMB to eat above the rest (freshwater, that is). Maybe it is just because I have fond memories of it from when I was a kid. But that is my favorite. However I rarely keep them-maybe one a year. For saltwater, flounder (fluke) is great and striped bass is a classic, but redfish is probably my favorite. Specked trout and croaker are both very good but a bit too soft in texture to rank at the top for me.

One of the places my Wife and I fish, I was talking to the Biologist and he asked if I ever kept any bass. I proudly stated that we only catch and release our bass. He asked, told me (!), to keep as many bass in the slot as we wanted. I gave him one of these...😳🤪. He stated the particular pit was getting extremely overpopulated with smallish bass and they needed thinned. I told him that I guess we could our 10 as I have friends that would take some as well. He clearly told me that if I was willing to keep more to keep basically what we wanted and he would let the Conservation Officers know that I had permission to keep extra. It was weird and extremely hard to change my mindset!! But, we have kept a few more out of those pits.
