Trena restores her last exterior door of the season. This one was a doozy. The damage was much worse than expected. Water damage, rot, splitting, decay.
Thank you so much for watching! If you enjoy my video and would like to say thanks you can now buy me a coffee! This will just help me to be supported while I continue to make these videos for everyone to enjoy. Cheers to all my wonderful subscribers! www.buymeacoffee.com/JohnsFur...

I've painted buildings for 40 years, and this young lady is one of the few who understand how to fold sandpaper.

Yes! So puzzled by folks who fold an orbital pad in half. She folds it in thirds! My old heart is 😊

I was taught by old house painters to ful full sheets in half. Then fold the halves into small quarters. Same concept... You can always unfold to get fresh sandpaper that bites.

I’ve restored many doors ,among other things ( professional restorer) and when I saw the door spit ,I knew I’d been doing it all wrong for so long.! Now I’m going to have to make one. I knew this woman was the real deal when I saw her hand carve moulding profiles. It’s funny watching someone do a job I do all day.

Outstanding redo on that door, now everything surrounding it needs some updating. I love that no task seems daunting to you, you just go for it when most of us who really don’t know much about refinishing would have just given up and replaced the door, or whatever project was before us. Respect to you Trena and to your Dad John for teaching you so very well.

Wonderful restoration as always. That new door furniture is really cool. I've been folding sandpaper all wrong, thank you. You will become a cat person, they give you no choice ! As I enjoy this video, Keiko is asleep on my bed, Yuki gently snoring atop the bookcase and Michi will be on/near my daughter. All 3 are sisters rescued as kittens. They get to you - you have been warned.

I learnt how to fold sandpaper from my woodwork teacher at school 60 years ago. It wasn't all about not sticking a chisel through your hand although someone in my class managed that. About cats: my son's one chooses to sit in the crook of my arm when I'm trying to type, so I have to do it one-fingered and using the caps lock. And yes, she purrs all the time until she falls asleep. I'm not a cat person either, but she chooses to disregard that fact although now it's getting warmer, she's going out into the conservatory and garden. I'm more dog-oriented and I used to have a white standard, but sadly, he had to go. I love to see your girl - very much like my Sam.

An old carpenter here.. just love watching your videos and you are a true craftswoman! I only want to say one thing about the term that everyone seems to use. There is no such thing as “Dry Rott”, wood rotting is caused by moisture that doesn’t evaporate! So the has rotted, wood doesn’t rott from being dry! 😂😂❤keep up the great work!

Beautiful job to return this door to its former glory. Your skill to patch in those replacement pieces is second to none. I also use the PC-Petrifier to stabilize the wood before adding the epoxy wood filler. It is the best option I have found. Kudos to your mill for matching the profile for the glass bead. Thanks for sharing and giving this gorgeous door a new lease on life.

Incredible. I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite 'episodes'. I did miss the color toning though. That is one of my favorite parts in your videos. But this had sanding, scotchbright, and buffing. I love the sheen on this door. Oh, and the fact that you don't like 80's brass makes me like you even that much more. I am just so impressed with your work. I do wonder though, did the client have the door repaired just so they could say, "liook at my door, Trena restored it." instead of just getting a new one?

Having has to repair and refinish exterior doors, I can only hope that you fully sealed the top and bottom edges of the door. Especially the bottom. Considering the type of winters Windsor gets, sealing the bottom is most important even if your client was going to have a wrap around type of weather strip. Sealing the end grain prevents any moisture from soaking into the stiles. Important for a vestibule door.

Tip. At 21:11 it is easier to cut the replacement strip of wood to size first and use it to trace onto the door. That will give you an exact replica to chisel out and will eliminate a lot of trial end error.
@jonarothen
@jonarothen Год назад
That’s a great tip. It’s easier to cut your replacement pieces and use them as templates. I would also add. For the patch in the rail you could use a small router to remove most of the wood then cut the mitres with your chisel. When patching glazing bars I also mitre the ends to increase the glue bond. If the patches face out I use resin to bond the patch which also helps prevent any water getting into the joint. I’m looking forward to seeing your completed door. Best regards, Jonathan

At JOHN'S FURNITURE REPAIR you can actually learn something from watching paint peel. Another top level restoration/repair! To bad the original brass handle couldn’t be reused/matched with new security hardware. It looked like a more comfortable handle than the “modern” sharply squared-off replacement. I hope the brass one wasn’t trashed. So much skill, honesty and integrity is always presented in an unassuming way by Trena in these videos. I think they should be required viewing by all future (and current) MBAs in all business schools to demonstrate to them that ‘business’ doesn’t have to be (and shouldn’t be) the ‘cut-throat’, ‘winner-take-all’, ‘screw-everybody-to-get-ahead’, ‘lie-whenever-possible’ practice that it is becomming.

As always, you've done a terrific job. Especially matching grain patterns on those repairs. My hat is off to you. It makes me wonder if there was something special about this door that made it worth saving. While I am impressed with the outcome, I have to think it would have been more cost effective to replace it. I just find myself wondering why the owners chose not to. They could not have chosen someone better for the task. And that rotisserie for turning the door over was a fun to see!

well, its actually always more cost effective to replace than refinish. unfortunately new products and materials are usually sub par and lack the character of 150 yrs of life so often its such a treat to restore and have that piece of history in tact. cheers!

The other issue with the door being the wrong way round is security. Someone only needs to pop the glazing quadrants off to remove the glass and gain entry. The other benefit of folding the sandpaper as you suggest is you dont have two smooth faces of the sandpaper against each other allowing the faces to slip slide.
