Michael Johnson defined what it meant to be a 400m runner. His incredible endurance to run that brutal event where most of his quickest times could be equivalent to a women's 4x100 relay run is amazing

@@shanelawson5072 okay so what you're saying is that his speed & speed reserve aided the endurance Johnson already had. Then along with that tough 400m training, Michael must have done a lot of short sprint workouts of 100m sprinters then. Cuz his personal best over that distance is 10.09 seconds, which is impressive for a quarter miler. His running style wasn't ideal for the 100m. It was suited for the longer sprints, aiding the endurance needed for them. What you said makes sense now.

Love me some Michael Johnson content. The guy was a winning machine! And to run that split when he didn't really need to go that fast was legendary. On the level of Usain Bolt in my opinion.
@eamparbeng
@eamparbeng 2 года назад
Usain Bolt couldn't stand running the 400m as much as Johnson's running style wasn't ideal for the 100m. The two men have met and there's a lot of respect between the two legends. Bolt often sought advice from Johnson as what to do during his career. And Johnson praised Bolt as being the greatest sprinter of all time

@@AK-gb9rp Yep, I saw a documentary where they measured certain aspects of his form against other runners. When you lean forward and drive, your feet are behind you. That is ok for gaining speed, but doesn't maintain well. Johnson was already to top speed well before most other athletes ended their drive phase. Feet out in front, pulling him down the track at top speed, floating basically. Even in the races where he had bad starts, it was all over as soon as he reached that up right stance.

Incredible 200 metres as well, only 2 other athletes have bettered his 19.32 in a quarter century, & that's only thrice. His volume of oxygen to lung capacity must be off the charts or something, simply incredible sprinting.
@Ximme
@Ximme 2 года назад
😂
@Magnus_Loov
@Magnus_Loov 2 года назад
Probably not aerobic lung capacity. It's almost the opposite "system" in the body, the anaerobic, that kicks in when it comes to "speed endurance", His anaearobic capacity was probably off the chart. How his body handled lactate ("lactic acid"). How he could keep on running with lactate levels that would make normal person puke (or feel like his about to die) instantly and still keep the form despite how the body screams at all levels.. How he perfected his own running style which then delayed this lactate hell to happen later on in the races compared to other runners. How his setup of muscle fibers was unique with more of the "inbetweener muscle fibers". Fibres that shared a bit of both fast twitch (power) and slow twitch (endurance) muscle fiber properties. Yes compared to most (if not all) the 100 m runners he could have had better VO2-max (lung capacity). But not compared to the middle distance runners (and longer distances). If he would have had a VO2 max "off the chart" he wouldn't have been the 400 meter "sprinter type" in the first place! As a whole a fantastically fit athlete anyway. To me the greatest of all time with that 200/400 m "impossible" world record combo!

Great channel. But you have to stop putting these times that never happened into the screenshot. It's click baiting. I don't want to miss a good video from you, over a wolf cry situation.

Trust me I think usain could run the 400m and get that record also...Johnson is great but bolt is the glad of track and field

If bolt trained the 400 he would almost certainly have the record but at the end of the day Bolt preferred the 100/200 and is retired now

@@wyattcreeper6780 Bolt was made to run the 400 in high school and absolutely hated it! He did have the talent for it, no doubt.

Who's to know , the 400m is a bastard of an event maybe Bolt didn't have the stamina to do it at the highest level ??

Actually van Niekerk ran under 43 seconds if we subtract his reaction time. He ran a 43.03 and we know, no one can have a 0.03 reaction time. That is illegal. At least 0.1. thus Van niekerks running time is less than 42.93, which makes him faster than Johnson. In a relay race, you can subtract the reaction time -ish. Little less maybe as you don't hvae blocks but the "flying" start could arguably make up for that, oh and his reaction time was obviously more than 0.1, possibly up to 0.15? Oh yes

Olympics were dope testing since 1968. Worlds pretty much around the same time. Granted it was fairly easy to beat those tests....until the late 80s when technology was vastly improved. Anything from 92 forward was insanely difficult to beat when it comes to Olympics and Worlds. The only thing that was still easily beatable was doing blood infusions for more oxygen in the blood which distance runners were using until the early 2000s when it became widely known. It's not to say that there weren't cheaters, because there were, and were caught later using their backup samples, but for Olympics and Worlds......far less likely.

@@OoogaBoog linford Christie won in 92 a confirmed doper. Donovan Bailey came out of nowhere in 96 , broke the world record , never won anything after that. Maurice greene in 2000 was built like Ben Johnson and ran as fast as him too. Gatlin in 04 was retrieved for doping. ... Every athlete at that level is on something my guy.

@@OoogaBoog wtf? Athletes stopped doing blood transfusions in the early 90s when EPO came into the game. In 2000 they made the first test for EPO and everyone was scared so they started doing blood transfusions again.
