Female characters in these kinds of novels need to stop parading around, throwing out the titles of these English classics and using them to justify entering abusive relationships. Your reaction to her misunderstanding about Rochester in Jane Eyre is identical to mine whenever I read any discourse from teenage girls about Wuthering Heights. Too often in these novels women talk about the toxic relationship of Catherine and Heathcliff as though it's an ideal to be lived up to, and I'm just like, "Did this writer even READ Wuthering Heights or did she just read the blurb on the back of the book about how it's one of the greatest Romances of all time?" It's enough to make me want to bang my head against a wall repeatedly.

I have a book from middle school that is just filled of short stories with this plot line (dark fairy tales) some were pretty good and others… I actually really liked the beauty and the beast adaptations and always struggled between liking the one where the beauty was the hot tempered destructive one (to her credit she’s being held captive) and the beast was a worn out and tired soul who after being also imprisoned for so long became so calm and patient OR the one where the beast is a frat boy from our world turned into a beast and the beauty is dressed as a man to fulfill a deal her dad made to the beast and when they fall in love the beast openly questions his sexuality

At that age your brain is not fully developed and you have so little romantic experience that it's easy to not be very critical of the relationships in YA books. That's why these stories are so successful, they're targeted towards an audience who can easily overlook the problematic elements as long as the brooding boy character has one or two moving monologues

Alex Flinn's bibliography confuses me tbh bc her early books were pretty good. They tackled tough subjects like depression, abuse, forgiveness with a level of nuance rarely seen in early 2000s YA. But then all of a sudden she wrote nothing but shallow fairytale retellings. I wonder what happened 🤔 did she decide the modern fairytale schtick was more profitable? Not calling her a sellout but...

@@inosuke7002 when I read this book and I got to the ending and I remember thinking jane run. I just got an uneasy feeling about them being together. Mr. Rochester tells he loves her this that and other, and she accepts his marriage proposal. He allegedly loved his first wife, but he locks her up, so what's to stop him from the same to her eventually. I know he tells jane he really wasn't married to his first wife, because he was deceived into it and it wasn't valid. But here's the thing how do we know he's telling the truth. We don't get her side because she's already crazy when the book starts. I think he would be type to drive his wife crazy, or starts claiming she's crazy if she's not behaving the way he would her to or start being "out of line".

The biggest problem i have with this book is that part of the fun of “modern” retelling of fairy tales is seeing the clever ways the authors works in the story elements of the original to fit the new setting of the story, but nope this author literally just wrote beauty and the beast in modern day with high school characters and said “magic. Literal MAGIC!”
@emilygray6786
@emilygray6786 Год назад
While I love retellings, I agree that Beastly is forgettable in my mind because of how cliche and traditional to the original story it is. I can see how the movie tried it's best to make the story better, but both of them just don't stand out to me. I don't condone any of its poor messaging. It's just one of those trashy things in old romances, which sucks. There's also an alternative ending to the movie that pretty much is similar to the book that I like a bit better than the actual ending. It just felt more exciting to me. Also, I really like Beauty and the Beast in its messaging. I even examined it through a blog post. The best retelling of Beauty and the Beast I read was Ashley Poston's Bookish and the Beast. It's a modernized retelling that's enemies to lovers, but there's no kidding or stalking. The heroine, Rose, goes into a house owned by a famous actor, ruins a special book, and ends up in a deal in helping organize the book collection at the house. I definitely recommend that one if you're interested. I definitely like certain ideas of what Beastly was attempting to create a modernized fairy tale world. It's just that, if you're not into it, then it might not be as interesting to people like me. Anyway, great video and I look forward to watching more Adaptation Archives.

It would be great to write a story where the (centuries) older man doesn't try to pray on the younger girl, in fact downright rejects her.
