Say it with me, if there’s green there’s something to save! I bet if you’ve killed a zz plant before it’s because you overwatered it. This plant THRIVES off of neglect. The rhizomes, aka the potatoes, are bulbs that store water and I am not kidding when I say they can go weeks, even months without water (depends on the size). I use just my typical indoor house plant mix for this one (potting soil, orchid bark, and perlite). When soil is completely dry, I wait another week and then water 😂 And with some patience, you too can help rescue plants too.
Ngl, I put a zz up too high for me to water it and my boyfriend watered it in August and then again in like... May and it still got new zzs and isn't dead 😂
Do you know of any places/organizations that donate plants for people? I’m struggling with severe depression and one way I know makes me happy is taking care of and having plants in my life. I lost my job, so I haven’t been able to purchase any.😊
I'm so glad I saw this video! It's really encouraged me to keep "doctoring" my orchid. I accidentally messed up bad with her. She was so big, and so beautiful. Her stalk got to like 2 and a half feet tall, and she had like 20 blooms on her. Her roots were also so long, and thick, and green. So I decided to try and mount her on a log. Well, I didn't realize that the moss I used had dye on it. So overnight, her roots just shriveled up like raisins. I immediately took her off and soaked the roots in water for about 15 mins, which helped a little. By the 3rd day, she had started dropping ALL of her blooms, and the stalk started turning brown. I gave her a couple of days to settle back into her orchid bark and cut the stalk off. Today, the leaves are still firm and green, and the last healthy roots have firmed up and are plumping back up. I'm going to remove her from the bark, trim off the dead roots, and recover her in some spagnum moss. I will not be trying to mount my orchid again! Lol
Remember that even if your plant/rescue doesn’t have lots of growth with leaves etc., it might have lots of root growth that you don’t even see. That’s why it uses all its energy to produce roots first, leaves will come later
🤔 kinda like people. ...just be patient! ...if there are roots...there's hope. "...any slow or small growth is something to celebrate!" Be patient with ourselves and others. ❤️ Krystal!!!
"any small growth is something to celebrate" - its a sign I did something good for my plant. I'm still learning about plants, and Ive learned a great deal from you so thank you 😊. Your videos are very informative, and your enthusiasm is contagious 😊
I first started my plant journey last year and these were one of my first plants that I bought. Well, you are right, I overwatered and it died. At least now I know those huge bumps hold water and are called a rhizome. I thought it was something bad when I first seen it 😂Thanks for teaching me 😊
ZZ plants are one of my favorites plants but I've had terrible luck with them! I babied them too much..now I fully neglect them, but they have not done anything in over a year, they just exist in my home! Still love them, but I'd suggest buying them at a decent size vs small!
I have a raven zz that's sending up new growth. So exciting! Also have cuttings in water that are forming roots! Should be able to pot up in time for my mom's birthday 😊
I am working so hard to be patient as I am trying to rescue a dolphin plant from a big box store that apparently didn't water at all... slow going, but it is still green! (Just no real dolphins at the moment...)
I had my ZZ for almost 2 years it's been through a lot, I had it outside for the majority of its life but now I'm keeping it inside. First died off from a freeze, hail then trampled by a cat and now it's shooting out new growth.
I found a huge pot with ZZ plants in it that someone had left to the room that our apartment buildings garbage bins are. The pot was huge the diameter was 30cm and the height 28cm. It was root-bound and most of the roots were rotten. I'm going on summer vacation with my family so I can't really leave any new plants alone because I'll be gone for about month (I might be able to come and check the plants sometimes if someone gives me a ride) but I can't do anything that requires me to check or water a plant at least once a week because I don't know if I'll be able to come home that often. Most of my plants can handle 2-4 weeks without water and survived last year with me being away. I'll probably have to cut the ZZ plants, take those with me and try to propagate them while on vacation. I wasn't really interested to get a ZZ plant before but now that I found one I'm really invested in it and really hope I can save it. Really bad timing for me to find a plant that needs saving 😭.
I think a zz might be able to handle a month without care. I would leave most of it in the pot or w/e, put some cuttings into other containers and also take some cuttings with me.
I got a zz from Lowe's on clearance ($2.50!!!!) bc they totally overwatered it and put it in full sun so it was scorched as heck. I cut it back and checked the roots (thankfully they were actually very healthy!) and it is thriving at home with me ☺️
I'm waiting for mine to root, yes I did kill one before 😢. For about a year now I have only bought 1 regular plant find I can't pass the clearance/rescue (hero complex) it just feels so good to see them get better, like I can just buy and have this one plant or for the same amount I can save 6 😊
I'm trying to rescue a lil ZZ right now myself. The rhizome is practically gone. Thinking I should just cut off the one good stem and start a fresh with that.
Just rescued two monsteras today , the stem rot was starting but I caught them just in time before it got to the rest of the plant. Put them together , excited to see how they do.
1.) I actually killed a zz plant because I overwatered it. Now I have another one I wont overwater it again :D 2.) Thank you so much for your rescuing videos. They are so fun to watch and it inspired me to dont give up on my plants too fast. I almost killed two of my alocasias (i underwatered them, heh ironic xD) aaaaand then they got root rot. I thought they were for the trash can. But I also thought mhhh maybe i try saving them, what do i have to loose? AND GUESS WHAT?! THEY STOPPED DYING AND GOT ROOTS AGAIN!!! This feeling, aahhhh I get why people are rescuing, its so rewarding :3
Love your channel, and I thought of you as I stood in awe and amazement in the garden section at Lowe's in a rainstorm here in S Fla, looking to rescue something at 8 :30pm 😂😂 and a very nice garden employee told me on Saturday the store manager mark's down the already clearance plants and turns them into 85% OFF, to get Rid of them, guess where I'm headed first think in the morning , he told me because I said " Hey where's the dumpster , I want dive into it to save all these amazing plant's ..😂
I had a MASSIVE snake plant in my house and then my mum moved it and totally forgot about it and it died of littrally no water or light, when she realised she cut three slightly green dehydrated bits with old mushy root. Unfortunately 2 of the 3 died but the surviving 1 grew so quickly like it had a massive growth spurt a day! My goal it to rerun it to what is one was but that will be a few years yet like a really long time but I’m willing to wait for it!!❤❤
This makes me think of my crazy wasteful Venezuelan neighbors planting like 10 Coontie Cycad shrubs and watching them die a little more every day. They are like $50 a pop, so, like $500 worth- and my neighbors don’t even work!! So- I watched these poor beautiful plants bought with most likely government funds DIE. This weekend they mowed over them and I almost lost it but I’m kinda glad they mowed them over because they had allowed them to burn up- no special soil treatment, just being drained of nitrogen due to the grass and weeds sucking all the nutrients out of the soil. After that debacle they drained their pool for the third time this year- refilling it with our precious ground water. Such a vital resource and they just fill it with toxic chemicals and dump it right onto the ground to pollute our well water. It’s no wonder Venezuela is such a mess. 😓
I have been trying to propagate raven zz cuttings in water, and after 9 months I finally have roots started to show. I was so excited and my 4yr old called me embarrassing 😆.
My zz grew a mold and I had to replace the soil. Almost all of the potatoes were basically mush. I should have probably waited to water it more but the soil was all new. Now I got burnt looking leaves everywhere. It’s hanging on for dear life 😭
You should see my boyfriend's calathea... I don't even know what to do with it. Some roots, but if you adapt the pot to it, it seems to be too much for the plant. There are like 4 leaves, all crusty and already dead when they appear. So sad, it dies slowly and I can't do anything... Already changed the pot twice, now I leave it alone, give it some water from time to time.
My zz plant is the most fake real plant i have. I've had it 2 yrs, water it once a month, its grown one branch with a bunch of leaves very quickly and its never lost a single leaf. If i hadn't seen it grow that one branch id have thought i was duped and bought a fake plant. Lol
Zz grows from all parts of the plant. Infact the tip you threw, that grows too. In covid I tried growing them from leaves and they all grew into lil ZZ plants only from leaves!
Aside from overwatering and putting it in the freezer or oven I get the feeling that you really won’t kill these. They’ll look really sad but they bounce back with a determination to be admired
Help! I need your beef advise! We got gifted a cactus 🌵 and one has already rotted and fallen off (we haven’t watered it since we’ve had it we got it about 2months ago x how can we make sure the others in the pot won’t rot and if they are starting to how do we deal with them x thank you x
OMG Krystal! I finally remembered why you look so familiar! You look like the Actress who plays Grace in the TV series, Manifest. Her name is Athena Karkanis!
