The third scene (sung in English) from Act I of Tchaikovsky's opera, 'Eugene Onegin' from the 1983 Festival Ottawa production directed by John Copley. Apologies for the high pitched distortion in the background - the video's been ripped from an old VHS.

I attended this production in Ottawa, in 1983, and it remains one of my great operatic experiences. In English, yes, but an exceptionally good translation and the diction was crystal clear. Allen was extraordinary and the Tatiana was a passionate and extremely gifted soprano whom I’ve never heard of since. The great Lois Marshall was the Nurse, a particularly touching portrayal. The Letter Scene was unforgettable....would this be possible to post as well? The entire performance would be welcome! Thank you for the wonderful memories of 36 years ago!

@stellasavon Totally agreed. Sir Tom possesses one of most marvellously rich and warmest baritone voices ever.

@Snowss You're very welcome! And you're quite right, Tatyana is really very much presented as the 'Ugly Duckling' character in this production. The glasses were such a nerdy touch!

Tatyana is a quiet and shy romantic girl with rich imagination, big heart and understated beauty. She is brave enough to profess her love to a young gentleman from St Petersburg. He is a Child Harold's type of men, bored & refined. He had to reject her because he thought he had lost ability to love plus she was only 14 at that time! When he met her again a few years later, she had different air around her. She was a high society lady, not the awkward teenage girl anymore. Tatyana carried herself with much dignity and grace. She married a war veteran but still had feeling for Eugene. However, Tatyana stopped his efforts to engage in any communication with her by simply stating that she is now married and would remain faithful to her husband. (Но я другому отдана и буду век ему верна) Good Christian wife, a true diamond. Eugene leaves heart-broken.

She was 17. Pushkin wrote about this to his friend

"and I was ---touched by what you said" might well be enough for this poor Tatyana...

That's not a voice... That's liquid velvet coming out of his mouth...

Thanks for posting, do you still have this vhs? I was a child in this production of Onegin and still have fantastic memories of it. Could you post the peasant scene or the grand party scene? (I forget which acts but one was at the very beginning before she writes the letter? The other was Act 2?) I was a dancer in both :)

Tatyana present as plain/young until as married wealthy, and richly done up. Then Onegin wants her, and also because he is irresponsible and likes chasing married women. Tatyana: Kathryn Bouleyn, a.k.a. Kathryn Day.

It seems to be quite cynical and uneducated point of view. Pushkin is subtle and deep. This comment is anything but.
