Many of you have asked, well here it is! You've seen this film reviewed before, but not the way I have! While it still has people on both sides, it is definitely a movie with a lot going for it. You can't deny that.

You are correct, this film will never be considered great to the paid film critics and high end film makers,...but I feel Allcroft made a film that served its purpose. It has nostalgia for sure.

Also, there was a scene that may have been filmed (although unlikely) that would have tied Thomas & Friends to TUGS. It was supposed to be during the mail delivery sequence that was originally going to be a sequence with Night Train played over it.

Definitely a great review, Thomas & Friends has been a big part of my childhood and this movie was no different. I will add one note for you on why this movie didn't do so well, just an opinion. Shining Time Station was a kids show for the US/Canadian market, I grew up watching this show as well, however this show never made landfall in the UK where Thomas & Friends originated from. In which case, audiences from that country and many others would have no idea how Shining Time Station got in the picture

A very well-executed review. Thomas & the Magic Railroad was a cornerstone of my childhood. I've come to learn that everyone has their own respective opinion on the film, and I fully respect that. But personally, I will always view this film as being one of the best aspects of the Thomas & Friends community. And since I realize you pointed out that Edward didn't appear once in the film, which I agree is very strange, I wanted to propose something. In the scene where Mr. Conductor is talking to James at the Sheds, in the background you can see a train being bulled on one of the tracks next to the sheds. We don't see who is pulling this train, so given that, I like to believe that it's Edward. In other words, I think he actually might've been given a cameo, just an "unseen" cameo. And yes, I do believe such a thing is possible. Anyways, I gotta say, this review was worth the wait. And it makes me even more excited to watch the commentaries for Season 6.
@NitpickCritic
@NitpickCritic 4 года назад
Yeah,...I mean we can all think of where Edward could have fit in. Problem is...he still wasn't visible which is soooo unfortunate. Either way, good thought and thanks for the compliment!

@@NitpickCritic You're very welcome. Although I was a little suspenseful waiting for this review. This shows me that you can't rush a good movie review. I especially liked it because Thomas & the Magic Railroad happened to have been released in my birth year. And you know something else I realized? Even though the film was altered from Britt Allcroft's initial idea, I feel like she still received credit for the work she put into the movie, what with all the awards she received, and the fact that she provided the voice for Lady. It also shows that people who dislike the movie shouldn't blame Britt Allcroft for how they perceive it. While it may not be perfect, it definitely has many good aspects to it, at least in my opinion.

For me, I remember wanting to see Lady more after the movie. She's an unique character but sadly she only was in Calling All Engines afterwards. Another thing is the paintings which how does one lock a painting doorknob? It's one of the strange things I still don't understand. I also wasn't dumb. "Diesel 10 is back" well I was just a young kid and obviously I knew no such diesel existed before TATMR. There are other things that I quickly didn't understand since it doesn't line up with the timeline of the show and how it's explained how magic keeps the trains sentient let alone existing. Doesn't make sense. The only best things is Lady came out of it. Literally that's it. The story is good enough for my personal liking even with its confusing and unexplained moments or segments. Hey it's better than watching a heavy logging locomotive go over a bridge that clearly shouldn't be holding any weight (not to mention the toys kinda were flawed in one way or another basically the rolling stock were the best things out of them). All in all, Thomas and the Magic Railroad is best left as a stand-alone movie being it's kinda it's own thing. Except for D-10 and Lady making their appearances later. Would've loved to see more Lady the Magic Engine though. I still understand most of it though only snippets I don't fully understand. I do think the funniest scenes are with Junior

I wanna put something out there about everyone's complaints about Thomas and the crew having static faces. At the time, it never bothered me because that was the ICONIC LOOK of the series. While I do love how the range of expression have increased when they went full CGI, at the time the charm of Thomas came from how the series was made, narrator and how it LOOKED and that included the fact that they used clever cuts and camera angles to cover for the fact that they were filming models. Thomas' emotions work because of the facial expressions and the way the eyes move, with the help of the narrator doing the voices. But even if there were no narrator, just the LOOKS and the way the eyes move are enough to show how a character is supposed to feel. And it's not like Thomas was the only series that did this. There were series BEFORE Thomas that took this limited approach but again, there's just something about Thomas that made it so iconic that at the time, betraying it in favor of CGI would have made fans UPSET as it did when they slowed transitioned into first the CGI faces and then went 100% CGI. But from how the critics used it, it comes off as if they themselves have never seen the series and I can guess they probably didn't. Maybe if they were parents, aunts and uncles or watched the series with children they would get it but all the complaints about the faces just REALLY slams in how they were viewing the film and it wasn't as a Thomas film but any other generic 'kids movie'. If they KNEW about the series, they would have gotten it and pointed out that that's how the series is presented and shown but instead it was 'Static faces bad because other kids movies blurgh blurgh' Seriously, just think about it. If this movie had come out today and they claimed it to be an experimental an art film, these same critics would have praised the limited movements as groundbreaking and a bunch of other loaded terms that makes it clear they just want to SOUND SMART vs show what they really liked about the film out of entertainment and enjoyment. I'd rather hear from the fans and from them I've gotten a better understanding of what they hated about the film but also what they LIKED about it and I find it way more fun on top of informational than some overpaid critic who looks at films as a means of show casing just how 'refined' THEY are vs whether or not they really enjoyed. There is a difference. And to be honest; yes the movie is bad but it's so bad it's HILARIOUS. Plus the information that came out about what happened is SO fascinating and fun. Being American myself, I grew up with Shining Time and PT Boomer fits in so perfectly with the series that it is a shame he was cut out. He comes off as a more devious Schemer and even then Schemer would have thought this dude was too much. Can you imagine it if they went in even deeper and Schemer were in this film, and he was sort of lured into the plan only to turn his back on Boomer when things go bad. And what about the Jukebox crew? They could have had something where it's revealed that the crew can turn human in the Sodor bits much like how Mr. Conductor is tiny in the real world but on Sodor he's 'normal sized'. There are so many 'WHAT IFS' to this film and that's what keeps it so interesting.

What's even weirder about that Eric Idle narrated trailer is that when it was included on VHS' from Columbia/Tristar (the home video distributor of the movie), they got veteran voice actor Jim Cummings to dub over Idle's narration, but they left Thomas and Diesel 10's voices intact for some reason.

Finally! A review from someone who says this movie is good! The only flaws I think this movie truly has is its confusing story, handful of goofs and kiddish humor. But a lot of movies have mistakes, and a lot of movies have that kind of humor too. Even Disney movies like Aladdin and Lion King have that kind of humor and those movies have remained some of the best animated movies and not to mention one of the best movies of all time. This movie is TRULY an underrated gem and classic. Like Nitpick Critic already said, it's no masterpiece, it's not the kind of movie to get an Oscar or academy award, but it leave you with an impression and great feeling.

R Gilyard Well for one, the movie doesn't explain how the dust on the windmill that read "Stoke up the magic in the mountain and the Lady will smile, then watch the swirls that spin so well" appeared and where it came from. There might be another plot hole, but I can't remember. Maybe it's really just that one lol. Also, I noticed for some reason that there was something off about the story. Maybe that's just me though. Or that's the exact reason why people criticize the plot and story. By the way, please don't think I'm criticizing and hating on this movie! I saw your argument with Mr. Mineblox/Daylight Twinkle and MrPug25 talking about the film having no major flaws. Don't think I'm just like them. I'm just trying to share my thoughts and opinions on the movie without starting fights.

In my opinion this movie is a burning trash pile that doesn't deserve to have the T&F logo on it. My real problem with it is that it's too Americanized and T&F is NOT a "magical world in a alternate universe", it's a real working railway that co-exists with our world. The acting is sub-par, the plot is HORRENDOUSLY pathetic. This movie could never work no matter how many re-writes it gets. Additionally, after the movie bombed Allcroft was basically forced to sell the trademark to HIT Entertainment, and then we got the "New Series" which while not the worst era of the show, it's no classic series. I respect your opinion though. Great review! (I can't wait for you to talk about season 6!)

There's no such thing as a "good opinion". In no way did I dis-credit his opinion, saying "I respect your opinion though. Great review!" not respecting someones opinions. Please check your facts before ranting.

I think the live action should have never been but also it was immensely miscast. Peter Fonda can only play certain characters and even then he is not a good actor and Alec Baldwin would have been better as a live version of Sir Topham Hatt since he is so full himself. As a sortof fan of the series I am only interested in the the world of Sodor and talking trains.
