Join the British Museum and City Lit for an evening of drama and discussion, centered around TS Eliot's play Murder in the Cathedral.
Performed and filmed by City Lit tutors and drama students, watch scenes from Eliot's famous verse prose play, which evokes the dreadful circumstances of the murder of Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral.
These will be shown as part of a panel discussion about Murder in the Cathedral and its context, considering why the theme of this play resonated with Eliot in the 1930s. Why was he drawn to the narrative? How did he articulate this? And what's it like for actors to embody and empathise with the main characters, King Henry II and Thomas Becket, and their circles?
The panelists include English Literature tutor at City Lit Phoebe Braithwaite, who will set the literary context for Eliot's work, and TV and film actor Gary Grant, who directed the filmed scenes. The event will be introduced and chaired by Dr Naomi Speakman, co-curator of the Museum's exhibition Thomas Becket: murder and the making of a saint. Speakman will also explore the legacy of Becket's death.
This event is held in collaboration with City Lit, the largest college for adult education in London and Europe.
