Tom, that image at 03:10 brings back good memories of the wintry Lake District two years ago ! You were miserable and knackered in your own video of trip as well ! :-) :-) Great videos of the trip by all 3 of you and loving the images from all you highlighting the shapes, colours, textures of Iceland..
@@Alister_Benn Yeah, just don't come to Victoria, we are in stage 4 lockdown with a bloody 8pm curfew which is going to run for a few more weeks. Canon have just made all their Canon Collective guys redundant Australia wide so not a great time for photography here. I take my 400mm lens on our 1 hour permitted walks every day but think I might be breaking the law!
I got to agree with Thomas at 10:00 about seeing different views on shooting stuff instead of the big vistas. He, and Adam Gibbs, has made me look different to scenes and more into the intimate landscapes. I really enjoy those more minimalist shots lately.
I really, really liked this. I discovered Thomas about 4 years ago, and then Adam about 3 years ago, and most recently, you - Alister. I really love these kinds of intimate and in depth videos. Thanks for sharing this. Really well done.
Hi Alister: I found this video to be very interesting and engaging. Besides yourself, Adam and Thomas are some of my favorite RU-vid creators. Keep safe. . . . Keith (Canada)
Very much enjoy listening to you chat , its true what you said about being with like minded people , I have a group of guys that I go away with once or twice a year , we all met on workshops with Richard Childs ( worth getting on your channel for a chat ) and get on like a house on fire. Also re intimate landscapes , I've found myself moving that way and I think as you evolve as a photographer you do start to see Beauty in the small things , how the light is falling or the subtle colours and contrast , you start to get an eye for those things rather than just pointing your camera at the scene you are presented with. Anyway keep doing what you're doing Alister and keep away from that Covid
If you are a fan of Thomas Heaton then I highly recommend his book. I think the cover is beautiful which enshrines the many beautiful photographs that take you on a journey of planet earth. The format of the book, as mentioned in this video, tells the story of high places gradually descending through valleys to deserts. Thomas was correct about his autograph. I think mine was done at the end of the day. I would never be able to identify his name.
This was absolutely great. So interesting to listen to the three of you and Alister you did a great job of moderating this. Thanks so much to all of you for all of your videos from this trip and the lessons you've provided. Jim
Alister - I truly enjoyed this conversation, and I relate to sooo much of it. As someone who's shot for 40 years (most of it professionally), I'm finally at a place with my truest love (landscapes) that echoes yours, Adam's and Tom's. A very happy new subscriber from Australia, here. Thank Adam for the recommendation. :-)
A thoroughly enjoyable video, you are a natural interviewer, effortlessly transitioning into each subject and showing genuine interest...very insightful, and a fine behind-the-scenes discussion.
Thanks for recording this, it would have been better if I was there and could have joined in the conversation, who knows maybe one day. But this is the next best thing to be able to see a chat between three great photographers all of who I follow on RU-vid and in many ways inspired me to start my own channel. I’ll certainly be checking out some more of the vision & light series.
I've been following all 3 of you for about 6 months and it's great to see you all taking photos that you want to take and that really satisfy you rather than what people expect, it's clearly making you all less stressed and more contented photographers. I'm really enjoying looking for more intimate compositions within a larger landscape.
A great conversation between the three of you. Great to see how much fun you are all having because you are able to just be yourselves and do what you want. A reminder that everyone needs to find their own joy in photography. Thanks for sharing. 💜
So true Jane. Yeah, it was very therapeutic, but I really suffered when I got home. It took me about three weeks to get my perspective back. Feeling great now, but boy, August was tough.
Expressive Photography I think everyone is struggling a bit now with all the restrictions as we are still in a sort of limbo. Even worse when you get a break from it and then back into it. Take care hugs to you both.
Absolutely pleasurable evening of chat. I follow both Adam and Thomas, Alister, and of course this chat sort of wraps up the trip and the experiences you’ve shared, and given a behind the scenes conclusiveness to round everything out. Great idea, great fun, and thanks. I really could have listened all night…..
Great questions and interview technique Alister with two guys I've followed for years...having been on a couple of week-long trips with Tom myself I can reassure everyone that he's actually very personable and indeed as I found in Torridon last year he's partial to the occasional malt so can't be all that bad......:-)
Alister Benn, please, please get your book out! Thank you to the three of you for sharing your Iceland trip and this follow up chat. I gained a lot of creative inspiration from each of you watching each of your videos of this trip.
Super interview, very thoughtful questions and answers. You guys are so different but have a great natural affinity and diversity of knowledge and experience. You should do monthly Zoom calls during this hiatus.
Thanks for that guys, mates just having a chat about life in 2020 and after. We have all been effected, now we will see who and how landscape photographers rise. Regards from New Zealand
I could listen to you guys talk photography all day. Could be, intimate images are gaining popularity because they're just more accessible to most people, thus more relatable. Most of us will never get to Iceland, after all, and many of the "epic" images have already been done to death. Besides, travel anywhere right now is a sketchy possibility at best. But intimate scenes can be found almost anywhere near where you live, if you keep your eyes and mind open.
thanks for this conversation, you are with Simon Baxter my favorite photographers on youtube, each in your field you make me spend pleasant moments with your videos. You are complementary, passionate and you do not cheat in your attitude. Excuse me for my write i'm a french fan of you.
Really enjoyable video Alister. So pleased that you guys had such a great time after this year's upheaval and your disrupted work plans. Stay safe and have fun.
Another great video. I could listen to you guys for days. I believe I get more out of this kind of format, than the "how to" type. You guys are awesome. Thanks Alister.
You all looked/sounded like you were ready for home, but you all had an amazing experience. Some great videos from all 3 of you. I think the sand got to Thomas. ::)). Enjoyed the laid back chat.
Why is it that everyone introduces Thomas Heaton as "Mr. Thomas Heaton" and everyone else by their first and last name only? Why is he shown more respect than everyone else? And you're not the only one to do that.
Frank Crispo I think the “Mr T H” stems from the F4 crew and in particular Gavin Hardcastle (Fototripper) - seems to be a UK joke/Banter between friends that has been continued. I think the focus on Thomas comes from his subscriber numbers. However does it really matter? Just enjoy who you enjoy following, and don’t follow those that don’t inspire, motivate, educate and develop your interests. I like the F4 crew combined, because of all their different personalities. Not to mention they introduce us to other photographers such as this guy, Michael Shainblum etc...
Enjoyed the rambling as well as the videos from all three of you on the trip. I've been called so laid back I'm horizontal but Adam has another gear I need to find! One last thing, can I ask Adam and Thomas, at any stage of the discussion were you tempted to mention,,, Squarespace LOL
Marcesence is the term for young beech trees holding their leaves through winter. You are correct, older beeches don't do that. I only know about this because I wrote a blog post on it back in March. Really enjoyed this informal chat Alister.
Good to hear the three of you on the Loneliness of the Landscape Photographer: hope y'all have cleaned up fully now! Tom's observation on the wideangle epic shot at a given location leaving you with little else to do also struck a familiar chord - I think we can all get Insta'd out that way - but the Iceland material from all three of you has been really interesting and thought-provoking.
I really enjoyed that Alister. I have been following Thomas and Adam for quite a while and your good self for just a few months now. Iceland looks just fantastic doesn't it? So when are we going to see you on Photography online which is based out of Skye? It was really good to see a more relaxed, funny side of you, you come across as pretty serious in a lot of your vlogs!
It’s interesting listening to the three of you chatting, & each of you saying you are not sociable, with each of you having RU-vid channels where you routinely share what you are doing with all of your viewers. Seems almost like an oxymoron.
Thanks For that. Well, it’s our work, and talking to a camera in your office or outside is quite different from being sociable. I think sociable isn’t the right word. All three of us appreciate time on our own to do our own thing.
This is a fantastic video. Hope you guys do get together again soon for another chat. Where do i pre-order the book? Add your book to Toms and waiting for Adams. Got to pinch Toms idea and head to Scotland then to the Lake District and the Peak district for Autumn colours. Any less visited Gems of Scotland to go to?
Have you got any evidence of beech bark disease over there in the UK? I feel I should say that despite being rather insular I feel I could spend time with any or all three of you. This makes me miss my friend Scott, we weren't super close in the constant contact sense but just got each other and were very comfortable, we could shoot all day with neither cramping or rushing the other.
Very enjoyable conversation. BTW, 200mm on the Fuji GFX is equivalent to about 160mm on 35mm full frame ;) As for being more immersive of a photo experience with a drone, DJI sells a dedicated VR goggle set that basically puts your eyes inside the drone camera! Don't get motion sickness though because your ears and eyes will be in complete disagreement with one another which leads to vertigo.
