1:40 - 1:59....Although it's pretty understandable where Thomas is coming from in regards to not liking the "superhero" stuff and thinking that it's just a bunch of grown men running around in tights and that it's also just a bunch of "soap opera" type stuff as well, in actual fact, the "superhero" stuff actually *does* have some pretty deep and serious moments every now and then such as for example serious stories involving characters such as Spider-Man or Superman as an example or even the type of issues that a character such as Black Panther has to deal with on a regular basis and then there's some of the "darker" superhero stuff that involves characters like Spawn, Blade and even Ghost Rider as well among others. So yeah, Thomas may have a bit of a point on one hand, but on the other hand, there's *so* much more going on with the "superhero" stuff than he could ever even bother to imagine 💯.
Didn't he almost knock himself out filming that fight scene by doing his own stunts? I think in the making of the movie they talk about where he jumped through the wall and accidentally slammed his head on the window or something.
Hands down, Jane is the best punisher. It’s unfortunate he was lumped in the wrong film; if he’d had creators who understood the character more, the film would have blown it out of the water.
@@kurtstergar1042well if you’d actually read my comment, I said he’s the best punisher but the film he’s in is extremely flawed and not in line with the punisher comics. If he’d been in a film created by people that understood the punisher character, jane’s contributions would have made it to dredd levels of fantastic
The short was visually impeccable, but the script was hideous, as I said in another comment: Frank Castle needing motivation from some random dude to go help a girl in distress just because she's a ghetto chick so he doesn't care in the first place!? Whoever wrote that shit knows nothing about the Punisher and doesn't understand once iota of Frank Castle's (pre-current-woke-Disney-era) personality and psychological makeup.
@@oscarjimenezgarrido7591 I'll trust you on that. I've never personally read the Punisher comics. I always thought his motivation in that short was the little boy not the girl.
@@vandammefan34 It's been ages since I saw it and only saw it once, although it was more than enough and the fact remains: he had to be almost forced into action by Ron Perlman's peep talk, regardless of whether it was the girl or her child what acted as ultimate motivating factor, and that's completely out of character for Frank Castle. Not Jane's fault however, and the short was visually competent and all, regardless, but I'm convinced the writer was more worried about ticking the boxes in the notes he got from scriptwriting classes (I can almost see him losing sleep out of worry about fulfilling the 'main character always needs to have an arc' rule, which not only isn't always true or necessary but can even turn counterproductive in some cases, like this one) than he was about getting the character right - provided he even knew and/or understand the character properly to begin with.
There hasn't been a bad one yet, but once bernthal is done, marvel is sure to make the next Punisher woke and weak! Instead of Punish we, we'll get The PunishNerd!
There’s an “Extended cut” version of TJ’s Punisher which includes a “dark” scene where Frank essentially forces his friend to kill himself. It’s one of several great scenes which unfortunately got cut from the digital version.
Thomas Jane has a very small cameo as '" THE PUNlSHER"' in the movie, '"SPlDERMAN 2"'. Watch closely as Kirsten Dunst is running thru the streets of New York with a wedding dress on!
He totally should have won an oscar for his brief role in Nemesis. If you can act in front of naked and shredded Deborah Shelton..you deserve every acting award in the world.
@@ahabduennschitz7670 I thought the Expanse was a bit of a shit show myself the first time I watched it, but there was enough in it to keep me interested. But a lot of it was because I hadn't read the books, and most of it felt too random to me. Once I read the books, the show made a lot more sense. I rewatched it recent, it truly IS an amazing show.
Them 2 are literally my 2 favorite punishers ever like they’re the best yet underrated punishers and has the best performances on a global scale than the other 2 does(No Disrespect At All To Ray Stevenson, loved his movie but the story wasn’t hitting on a writing perspective…R.I.P.)
I like both. Jon has the benefit of a series, which of course is longer than a movie. You can better track and understand his suffering as a father and his suffering as a husband...
Thomas Jane was the unsung Punisher. Bought the VHS and the director cut DVD. When it came out in theaters I felt like I was the only one who watched it. When dirty laundry came out I was like hell yeah, Punisher fan since the 80's
Thomas Jane will always be my absolute favorite Punisher. Especially after watching the Special Edition with the extra scenes where he convinces Jimmy Weeks (at gunpoint) to kill himself for being the reason his family was killed. It's so dark and amazing!
I can see why they took out that scene and opted for the theatrical version, but goddamn, that deleted scene would've made the movie a lot more true to the tone of the comic book. Wish they had kept it in, but no doubt that executive heads wouldn't and couldn't allow it, because then it probably would've been rated NC-17.
@@Saturnia2014 yeah it's such an amazing scene. Thomas Jane is just so cold blooded in that scene. I hate that so many people shit on his performance/movie in general. I feel like if more people got to see that scene, it could've changed some minds but yeah, the execs never would've allowed that cut in theaters back in 2004!
@@mikejackson1003 i dunno how to find it these days with streaming stuff but i have it on the collector's edition DVD from like 2008 i think? I'm sure the scene is here on RU-vid somewhere. It's definitely worth looking up!
My one problem with the film was always how some City Crook like Howard Saint could get any info on an undercover FBI agent. Then I saw the deleted scenes many years later and it all made sense. His cop freind was the one who sold him out.
everytime I've played Dirty Laundry for anyone they've been blown away by how great it is. Greatest short I've ever seen. Thomas Jane is the best Punisher period. Bring back Frank Castle!
Thomas Jane is the shit, you boys done well, amazing interview, and what you guys always get out of your guests is just honesty, real talk, again great interview, Thomas Jane is a straight shooter, loved every minute.
Always liked Tom Jane, just seems like a normal laid back dude who just happens to act. Loved him as Frank, and loved him in The Predator, made that movie entertaining.
Agreed Thomas Jane has a very small cameo as '" THE PUNlSHER"' in the movie, '"SPlDERMAN 2"'. Watch closely as Kirsten Dunst is running thru the streets of New York with a wedding dress on.
There was a point in my childhood where all me & my brother had to entertain us were like maybe 10 movies. Being children of poverty & divorce our parents were young, still figuring things out in their own lives. To us, our family felt broken. Thank God we had that punisher movie. It helped me realize how precious family is & what it means to be resilient. We would watch it every week. And now as a man I have a better understanding of how much I needed stories like that. Just as important as the first two spiderman movies are to me. I still cry watching them, but now those tears have memories tied to them. He will always be my Frank.
Oh man I'm right there with you with the first two spider man movies I tried to get my dad into them but he prefers the newer more action cgi ones. Specifically Andrew Garfield ones.
Thomas Jane has a very small cameo as '" THE PUNlSHER"' in the movie, '"SPlDERMAN 2"'. Watch closely as Kirsten Dunst is running thru the streets of New York with a wedding dress on.
I gave him that hat!!!! I had one in Knoxville and he loved it! So, I sent him one! Great to see him wearing it!!! He’s the best! Love the show and the interview! Great job!
Thomas Jane is such a professional, he is talented but also puts so much dedication to his work. Punisher 2004 is one of the best comic book films that have been made, and his own version of the character in Dirty Laundry was outstanding. He has also proven that you don't need a huge budget to create excellent films. Dark Country is an incredible film, Thomas Jane is a fan of The Twilight Zone (1959) and so am I, watching that film was a great experience.
I felt like Thomas Jane was a awesome Punisher in a meh movie. It need to be Rated-R with Frank on offense versus a bonafide threat. Kudos to Thomas Jane for talking about the film.
Thomas Jane is an awesome actor who sadly been I feel been sacked from the limelight for wrong reasons. The Mist, Deep Blue Sea, Dreamcatcher etc. are other great ones he was in. Jane was great as Frank Castle aka The Punisher both in the movie and sequel video game. Too vad we never got too see him continue the role. Ray Stevenson was good for the action scenes, but Jane was better as the character overall.
I agree 100% with what Thomas Jane mentioned here about the score. It just didn't fit the film. You have this revenge story and yet in many instances, there's this cheesy, overpowering, superhero-esque score that doesn't make sense. It definitely dragged the movie down tremendously.
In another comments section somebody stated that the Director either delibratley left out or denied having this cheesy rock song that was supposed to be at the very end of the movie when Frank is on the bridge and it fades to black. He instead opted for the eerie wind blowing in the background
He was absolutely fabulous in the 2004 Punisher movie. I especially like how he put in the time to change his physique to such a fit shape. Really made the Punisher character so much more believable. Great job.
Dude, Dirty Laundry was one of the sickest things I’ve ever seen!!! I was always angry that there was never a follow-up Punisher based upon the style of that short. Man, what could have been! OG Thomas Jane Punisher was still top notch in my book. Maybe Jane could do a Punisher The Later Years version like Batman. That would be sick.
The dirty, laundry movie short was brilliant. I lost count of how many times I watched that. I actually watch it much later, after the Punisher movie with John Travolta. It was good to see Ron Perlman in the short movie too.
If Thomas Jane ever reads these I hope he reads mine and knows how much we love him as punisher. I really wish we could've gotten more of you as frank castle
Tom is such a class act, i had the pleasure of being directed by him on the EXPANSE, loves that Fidorah and pipe of his, something right out of a film noire.
Thomas Jane is seriously an amazing actor. So many great roles. The Punisher was obviously a great role, but even in roles like the Stephen King's The Mist, that was a great movie. Then you have other great performances in roles, like The Expanse. One of the Greatest Sci-fi shows in recent times. Well done, Thomas.
While I thought he was great in the role, he was still far too good looking. Frank Castle should should have miles on his face and the grimace of death incarnate. Ray Stevenson had the right face for it. Shame he lacked the charisma or it factor and was in a mess of a movie.
I'm glad he mentioned his portrayal of Mickey Mantle, he nailed it. When he chuckles in the restaurant, spitting image of Mickey's laugh. What an actor. Loved him as The Punisher.
I really enjoyed the Bernthal version but I really wish we got to see a deeper version of Thomas Jane’s version - they guy is such a great performer. 😊
Ahhh man, that was really cool. He's a real one, and I think that translates into his role as Frank. Imagine a world where the original did much better financially, and the sequel went hard R, and got a significant boost in budget, with Jane reprising his role...would've been a game changer. Thanks fellas, awesome stuff 👍
Thomas Jane might just be the most charismatic guy in Hollywood. He seems like the most down to Earth guy you could meet and to this day I think his movie Give 'Em Hell Malone is the finest modern day noir movie ever made. You can feel the passion in Jane's voice for this kind of material.
He is the best Punisher hands down. So much potential. I love the extended cut version better. If that was in the theaters the movie would have made its money and got another film.
awesome interview! this answers a lot of questions I had about this film. Thomas Jane was the best punisher and clearly an awesome and passionate guy about what he does.
Man you can really tell how passionate Jane was/is about that movie as well as Dirty Laundry. He seems like a real down to earth guy to boot. Loved when he played the homeless man on Arrested Development 🤣. But in all seriousness, you can tell that the Jane Punisher had far more potential than it had lived up to, and Dirty Laundry proved it. Still, Jane's Punisher is prolly my fav.
The extended version of Punisher 04 is first great comic book movie of the modern age,it fills in all the little holes that the cinematic release left open.
Thomas Jane, deserved so much more. Always thought that it will be a sequel with him, because the movie was so and still badass, and nothing... that's a shame! Is an underrated actor, deserves more. Hollywood what are you doin'???
I have watched The Punisher at least 12 times, and I know I will watch it again at any moment. T. Jane is an awesome actor, so unique, and so talented. Thank you for the interview. By the way I think it was him riding a bike this afternoon by my neighborhood...
It's weird that studio executives didn't understand comic book movies getting gritty at the time considering that it was all about that: 'Blade', 'Crow', 'X-Men', even 'Daredevil'. Sure, they weren't all successes or R-rated like they wanted 'Punisher' to be, but they definitely had something in the back of their minds to pull from. It's just so great to see how Thomas Jane has basically always been this down-to-Earth man even after 20 years or so since that movie. If I had one shot to talk to him, it would be to say how much I appreciate his work, how much it influenced mine and how much I would love to get him back in the role as Frank Castle. Not just a cameo or a short, a full on movie, because that's what he deserves and I bet that's what everyone would want.
I actually really like the 04 score. But i'd like to see the cut with 2/3 silent score. Loved dirty laundry. Marvel should give their heads a wobble and get jane back for an older punisher asap. Let him direct it
I need to start by saying that i fu**ing LOVE Jon Bernthal & I've actively followed his career since TWD... That being said, nobody can top Thomas Jane's Punisher. The story is far from accurate & Trevolta cheeses up the film big time..but Thomas perfectly encapsulates everything that made Frank Castle intriguing to me as a kid reading the comics. He's bitter, angry, resentful, and ashamed. But he's also calm, calculated, methodical, & patient. The phycological war he wages against his enemies & his unpredictable soft spot for the downtrodden never fails to impress/inspire me.
RU-vid’s algorithms threw this my way. LOVE TJ. STANDER was what introduced me to him (even though I’d seen him in things before , like THE THIN RED LINE) . Damn fine actor. And a fan of THE ROCKETEER!?! Hell yes! Btw... my favourite PUNISHER 👍👍
Great interview! Really appreciate Mr. Jane's work, he really made all that's in his powers to improve the Punisher 2004 (although I would partially disagree with the statements about the score usage, for me, it has elevated the whole movie experience, while it's definitely a fact, that it could've elevated the sole 3rd act even higher if used as described, but at the cost of grounding the previous acts). Hope to see more good stuff like Crown Vic with T-Jane in the future (and, maybe, a bit less of collaborations with something like 308 Ent).
Epic! Great stuff! Dirdy Laundry is just awesome! Hearing Thomas talk about the bts of that film really shows he wanted to make it special, but sadly it was out of his hands.
I never actually watched The Punisher until a couple of months ago because I seen the trailer back in '04 when it came out and knew it wasn't going to be for me. I was pleasantly surprised, sure it had alot of flaws but it wasn't as bad as I thought it was gonna be. The parts with the neighbours really made me laugh (not sure how funny a Punisher movie is supposed to be but whatever hehe). Thomas Jane's a great actor and this was a great interview, thanks guys!
The Naibour characters are based on actual characters in the Punisher comics (Welcome Home Frank I think) Most of the humor is pretty morbid so I would say it fits perfectly and actually enhances the seriousness sometimes by giving us a contrast to how fatilistic and self destructive and lost hope Frank has become.
Castle's first outing should be in a gritty dreary setting. A follow up film in Miami would be great. But immediately after his family dying he shouldn't be in a sunny bright place, hanging out with a bunch of misfits in an apartment building.
Him in Volition's Punisher game is fucking pitch perfect. That's probably the truest version of the character he got to play. Also massive shout-out to Tom Jane in Neversoft's "Gun." Those two games, released the same year, left a permanent impression on me.
John & Lance, this is my FAVORITE video you posted. I’m a fan of The Punisher Films especially the Thomas Jane film. I also own copies of the 89 film & War Zone.
Love me some Todd Parker. Always been a fan of Tomas Jane since Bogey Nights, wish they would have followed the Max series even more for his 2004 punisher effort. But that being said, he makes the film very watchable
God I lobe Thomas Jane, such a good dude as well as being one of the most underrated actors of the past couple decades! On top of playing by far the best live-action depiction of Frank Castle to date, he was totally outstanding in "The Expanse." If you enjoy sci-fi, hell - even if your not even much of a fan of most sci-fi, either way you really owe it to yourself to check that series out - it's legit one of the best tv-shows of all time, regardless of genre. It really blows my mind how it wasn't/isn't every bit as big as "Game of Thrones" ended up being, especially seeing as how it was a much more consistently great show from the first through to the last episode! And as a massive fan of the source material, (the book series), Jane's portrayal of Detective Miller in the show was absolutely perfect! Also, it's kinda funny hearing his opinion of the 2004's "The Punisher" score, no joke - that's not only one of my favorite things about that movie, but every single fan of that film, (including pretty much every youtube vid critiquing or "revisiting" that film), they pretty much all mention how much they love/loved the score. Sure the movie had it's flaws, but it was and still is the best live action Punisher adaptation. Everyone seems to adore Bernthals take, and though i thought for the most part he did a decent job, his portrayal sometimes would be just WAY too over the top with his constant growls and screams and shit. He did it so much that it sometimes bordered on parody, kinda like Bale's Dark Knight portrayal. My one major gripe with 2004's Punisher movie was that i really wished the final battle was longer and that he had to kill more minions before getting to Saint's son and then ultimate Saint himself. But that's more of a nit-pick than anything. I truly don't get why/how so many disliked this movie, it's truly one of my top 3 or so comic-book movies of all time! Anyways, sorry bout the rant - great interview!
I didn't care for The Punisher film when it came out. In that time I heard a quote, I think from Woody Allen, the sentiment of which was to rewatch the movies you DON'T like as opposed to the ones you do. I've given a few movies another spin and really turned around on em. The Punisher was one of them. At first I thought it was because I was drunk, so I watched it again sober the next night. Sold. Thank you for the film, Mr. Jane, for the interview, and most of all - thanks for Dirty Laundry.
Jane has always been one of my favorite actors and it’s amazing to me that he’s not a bigger star than he is. But his numerous roles over the years, including “The Punisher”, really left their mark. The Punisher, The Myst & Deep Blue Sea are favorites of mine. Another underrated (but great) film he did was called “61” which was about the home run race that year between Mickey Mantle and his teammate Roger Marris. He played Mantle in it and he did a fabulous job. On a side note… He always plays kinda cool, quiet and suave guys in his films. So I was pleasantly surprised at how down to earth he is in this interview.
The montage of him getting ready before raiding Travoltas compound- with his VO about “if you want peace prepare for war” is still the most iconic punisher scene for me.
