I love how Simon is watching Thomas play his kit like a father watching someone dance with his daughter, while Thomas is playing all the tom fills we would all play if we ever had the same chance.
Those starclassics are so nice. He obviously tunes them "up" a bit so they really sing ! I'd be curious to know if he uses one ply heads since I'm sure they get changed every show.
@@slidethedoss239 He uses clear ambassadors (so yeah single ply non-coated heads, and tuned up), probably the choice every discriminating drummer would go for when not having to make happy the Star who hired him and/or one of those bloody sound-check guys. It reminds me of Cobham's tom-toms in Spectrum.
@@nicklucero24 I’ve never heard of you dude! Who are you? I’m also a musician have been some 30 yrs. I mean I’m a ‘Real Musician’ You’re full of shit…. I said what I said, so go run to your safe place, self sooth and everything will be ok. Also keep dreaming ✌🏻
@@frankburdodrums8984 oh, he's changed kids but his setup is always the same. I think he also uses the same type of shells apart from one time when he had bubinga
That's the first time I've ever seen anyone do a sound check on Simon Phillips' kit with Simon watching! WOW! The drum talent in that room at that moment with Thomas and Simon is literally OFF THE CHARTS!!!!! Oh to be a fly bon the studio walls that day... dream come true!!!
@ whomev's will read ! as difficult as Rhyming Simon can be @ least @ times, I seriously doubt the great Thomas non-doubting style, bothered as in "irratating" Simon whilst lMr Lang got ta laying down some pseudo-funky etc beats for a classic sound test check...! As witnessed here/hear..!
This is beautiful! Two very different cats for sure. I always love letting my drum brothers play my kit so I could go out in the room and listen. Turns out a lot of (good) sound engineers are good drummers as well.
Plus you know how cool it is for a drummer to finally have somebody play with some efficiency on your kit where you really get a feel for what it sounds like front of house 🤘
I must be a nerd because I saw the green kit and immediately knew it was Simon's then he popped into the shot. So many years of reading Modern Drummer as a kid!
Wow,what a unique chance for us seeing Thomas playing both his kit and Simon's with such an evident joy.Fine music. Both kits sound awesome and different at the same time.Nice!
Nice to see Pro drummers having other drummers play their kits and listening so intently to make sure everything sounds right, just like I do too! I literally get the same look that Simon did in front of the kit listening!
Love how Thomas tries a hihat groove in Simon's kit (who plays open-handed and has the hihat very low), tries to play open-handed as well, finds it very unconfortable and proceeds to not touch the hihat ever again... xD
I noticed that too haha. I knew before he even began playing on the hi hat it wouldn’t be able to with how low it is. It’s not a set up you can play right away it takes a ton of practice. He never tries to play open handed btw
Thomas is showing massive respect here imho. Playing similar to Simon. He could have blazed his stuff, but he held back. I totally dig that about Thomas.
------‐--- Perhaps there has been someone who has commented something similar, I have not read all the comments. But, in my opinion, it is admirable to compare how Thomas soundchecks his drum set, of course amazing sound and playing, and then to see how he plays another drum set with different owner and playing style, while Simon admire his creation and check the sound. Two Masters!!
I got some green star classics like that. Birch very thin shells so loud no mic needed awesome drums my drummer hates that he sold me his old star classics too!
Lol. Both Tama and DW sound amazing if you know how to tune them. Also, one kit has coated heads and moon gel, and the other has clear heads and is tuned wide open. Two different beasts for two different purposes.
If you care about the small details, notice at 1:41 the drill holes for the mounting hardware for the legs at the bottom of the two largest rack toms before the gong drum. They are also visible later from another angle. So, I guess Tama was like: "Mr. Phillips, it is not possible to have rack toms this big!" And Simon Phillips was like: "Hold my beer!" :) :) :) All jokes aside - great sounding instruments played by great players.
Well spotted. This racing green kit is very likely from the time when mr. Phillips still had three floor toms. Later they were converted to rack toms when he changed the setup.
Simon Phillips has the best (recorded) bass drum sound I think I've ever heard. Check out The Pump, on Jeff Beck's There and Back album, from June 1980. What a drum sound..! 👍🏻
Same drum set but the tone is different. Thomas is so much powerful and solid. Simon is very precise and dynamic. Thomas lang is one of my fav drummer in Solo and Performance. But Simon is my number 1 fav drummer because of his Music creation and playing song like a God.
