Honestly, a lot of these comments are sad, but funny at the same time. Just goes to show that no matter how great you become, how much you dedicate your self to the craft, there will still be those that undermine your gift. These are two of the greatest drummers in the world, and of all time. If you play drums and you don't realize this, then your opinion is bias and irrelevant... Honestly
I hate these drum mixes but I absolutely LOVE their playing as always! I've been listening to these guys since 2006 and I always find myself learning so much just from hearing their phrasings. Awesome!
My take on it: I love both of these drummers. Technique wise, they're practically equal. I noticed Ronald was very tight, precise, and well thought out. Amazing phrasing, he's thought this through. On the other hand, you have Thomas, loose, laidback, and going on pure feel. I don't thomas "thinks" about his playing as much, he just does it. He's definitely put his hours in tho, that's why he's so good. He fucking shredded that shit (they both did) but whenever thomas would start playing I was instantly captivated. He was truly in the moment. Props. Thomas get's the win on this.
You've missed the point of these things then. They're not put there for song context, it's "shedding" it's just a means of showing off and/or learning from other drums. It just happens to be this kind of setting where drummers don't have to worry about holding the beat or whatever, it's just trading licks and chops =) Watch them on their own or with their respective bands if you want their musical side though.
Thats the point ... Ronald is just about speeding it up, while Thomas keeps it down to earth and shining with some grooves. For me. Thomas wins this battel.
@MrsStudivent Well I`m saying that his overall skills, not just technique, is something almost unseen he grooves he has it all,but I agree he plays sometimes just a little over the top
Lol. They act like this was a showdown. Thomas, Ronald, tony, Eric, David, Justin, etc knew each other for years. They all grew up around the same area so to judge these sheds like a comp would be foolish
Everyone's gonna jump on the band wagon and go with Pridgen, just for the fact he's more popular. I gotta go with Ronald , for not only great playing but being a great teacher.
Rudments are Senseless? When you do all the studying these guys do you know where to place them and split them between your limbs in a musical context. If you knew where it all came from all gospel chops is from Jazz/Fusion players that happened to study rudiments. These guys can groove and they know time so well that they can do all these tricks...when it comes to them playing music they will always know how much freedom they will have but to call rudiments senseless is well...Senseless.
Sure one can like either one of them but when speaking strictly technically, if you're a serious drummer, you should know how much harder those licks Ronald did are.
