Dear god, Thorgal... This was my favourite comic from even when I was a kid, and to this day I love it more than stuff like avengers, Berserk and Oyasumi Punpun. It's not better, but I litteraly learned to READ with my dad reading this (he was the translator in Serbian). Dear god good times indeed
This is it! When I was a kid I had this book in some book case before I could really read but I remembered a lot of the art. I've been wondering what this book was for 30 years! So if nothing else, thanks a ton for showing this.
For some reason, all danish libraries had these in the 90s. I think they had to buy "european" cartoons or whatever for some budget and this is what we got. :D I remember being mind blown by it being mystic as well as futuristic. That kind of world building was wild.
The 'Child of the Stars' and 'Aaricia' albums (the English volumes have two Franco-Belgian albums in each) were published years after the Thorgal series took off, to give the fans some backstory and, well, to play with both the Viking/Norse mythology and SciFi angle a bit, I guess. When the English translations FINALLY took off, the decision was made to publish them as the first album, probably because to adhere to the 'proper timeline', but I think that was a mistake. Not that these stories aren't great, but they sorta misrepresent the series. The Thorgal series are not for small children. They're for older teenagers and adults. They can be pretty grim and deal with adult themes, and while the 'Child of the Stars' and 'Aaricia' are not exactly sugar and spice and all things nice, they look at first glance as something that was aimed at a younger target audience.
My mum collected them and I started reading them when I was around 6 years old. My main reason that they shouldn't be published as the starting book of the series, is they're not made that way. They're supposed to be prequels that you read later on. I think you're more connected to Thorgal and Aaricia through the other comics, and it's interesting to revisit their childhood when you're getting interested in where they came from. Still, I'm currently rereading the whole thing because I thought the series was finally finished (turns out it's not, I think?) and I'll never get bored of it, I freaking love these comics
my favorite comic. im 38 and have read this since i was a kid in poland. i got more than half of the books in polish last time i visited but i really wish this was more popular in english and just more well known... cuz its such an awesome story if you're into sci fi and fantasy and history in general. its pretty big in europe, its been around since the 70s. i heard they are trying to make a show too... they made witcher and thats based on polish books... i think? so anything is possible. i think it could be very popular if it was made into a show, its got too many stories to just make into a movie
first 20 thorgal comics are amazing. in Europe we have 37 volumes now. from volume 30 the stories become worse and worse. they are written by other guys than Van Hamme
Yes I did have hard cover versions back in the day and now I got reprint and seems like it’s censored.I contacted the publisher and awaiting some response.
