Sharay Reed is scary good.
He’s worked with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Branford Marsalis, Yolanda Adams and Cory Henry’s Funk Apostles.
Back in 2009 I saw a RU-vid video of Sharay grooving to ‘Joy to the World’ and it blew my mind. That video has since clocked up a staggering 5 million views!
In today’s new lesson I’m going to jump into that performance and look at 3 specific times that Sharay went Beast Mode!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

I have listened to it multiple times over the years. The thing that makes it even sweeter is that the God given talent is played back to God in worship.

amen to this! I really dislike how the message tends to be "use your gifts to God" but somehow except if you're a musician, then tone it down please so you don't mess up the PEOPLE'S ability to follow along. Problematic because: a) if someone is grown in a method of experiencing music, ie exposed to high skill levels for their lives, they can follow along b) why are we toning down a God-given gift because PEOPLE dont' understand it? Pearls before swine I say...

Scott shows respect and admiration for all styles, good on him. It can inspire young musicians the world over that haven’t been exposed to gems like this. I played guitar at Mt Zion Baptist Church in Austin, Tx for 7 years and this energy happened weekly. Some days more intense than others, but always uplifting and energetic. Many people will never experience being in the center of this. Our music pit was directly in front of the choir and it would make the hair stand on the back of your neck! I even enjoyed weekly rehearsals with the choir. There is nothing like it. I wish everyone could experience this. There are so many phenomenal musicians you’ll never hear of that only play in churches like this. Much respect to them all!!✊🙏

Scott, your tribute and accordance is heavenly here, as a spirit. But, beautiful friend, your playing is behind what S did. It's not insult, because the SCOTT stuff that you ARE is genius as who YOU are. So it's okay, because we need to leave him alone and not try to copy it. Just leave his stuff alone with your bass. We are not him. It's like WHY DO WE TRY TO BE ANOTHER ONE'S FINGERPRINT? We cannot. You can't. But bless your amazing heaven here as a learning and sharing community. Let it be better felt than told, and certainly better felt than slow attempts to copy it and teach it, wonderful Scott. His place in our heart is JUST LIKE YOUR place in our hearts: the moment he did HIM, at that very moment.

I am with you! A second Amen! Beast mode is fine, but a killer groove with tastefully placed spaces will kill me more than a beast mode lick and/or solo. Marcus Miller once said (paraphrase) "Ultimately, the baddest groove should blow away the hottest solo", or something like that - in an interview with Bass Player Mag. I couldn't agree more. My favorite Marcus bass playing his his subdued "beast mode" when he came up with an incredible groove for MIles, or Luther or Sanborn. Or Tony Levin on the live version of "Red Rain" with his 5 string......... Wow! Less is more.
