i still think the supertrios version is the best. I don't think i've ever heard a more intense Moment's Notice than that.

In the era when everyone else plugged in their pianos for more power, Tyner still had more power than anyone else in his fingers.

Saw Tyner in a room with less than 200 people at his "retirement" party. I was standing about five feet away and said, "what power and color in his playing". Then I saw his huge hands that could play things that other's could not.

Go, McCoy, go! I've seen McCoy seven or eight times here in Santa Cruz at Kuumbwa and he ALWAYS plays like this. All night. Every time.

All good picks but sorry, seven is far too small a number to pick for. Mccoy is ALWAYS in beast mode.

According to the late, great Marion McClinton, McCoy Tyner once broke piano strings at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis

I believe it. I saw him at Gilly's in Dayton,OH in the early 80's, I could see the piano shaking as he played. He had a lot of energy to get out!

Thanks for this. Ever since the very first time that I heard the first few strains of A Love Supreme, I've had this almost fawning, slavish devotion to McCoy Tyner. Over the years, I've listened and made noble but amateurish attempts to copy him ( that doesn't mean I'll stop trying :) ) with a limited measure of success. Seeing this compilation is inspiration and motivation to continue. Again, thank you

Great post. The degree of LH/RH independence is bananas. Something special about his brain. My favorite though is his accompaniment on "These Are a Few of My Favorite Things" with John Coltrane. It sounds at one point as though the man has 3 hands! I would love to see footage of that.

There's one thing that McCoy Tyner wasn't. He wasn't subtle. He didn't leave anything to chance. When I saw him back in the late 1980s at the Vine Street Bar and Grill in Hollywood, California, it sounded like more than 1 instrument when he was playing.

My personal all-time favorite is ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--b9LWJwBxH0.html from 1:20 on to 23:00. Out of this compilation it's no. 5 (Inner Glimpse), but you have to watch the original and see how, shortly after Mr. Tyner, Mr. Freddy Hubbard blows his mind out. :-)

It's probably "Hannibal" from the album "Looking Out" and the video is extracted from Montreal Jazz Festival 1982. But, I'm not really sure.
