Was a huge mistake that Ford quickly corrected for 1983 release

My first NEW CAR at age 18 I wanted a Tbird and pulled in the Mercury part of the lot in August 1980 and salesman talked me right into his loaded Demo as seen in this video at the 5 min. point. Twotone white over bittersweet with the Bittersweet half landau rood and back deck lid face. It was attractive especially to a 18 year old. It was $10K with power options, 4.2 V8 and Decor Group. How ever I paid $7500 due to it being a demo. The horsepower was a joke compared to todays cars and the MPG wasn’t that great either.

Attempted to order one. Ford kept changing content, substituting equipment. After 3 attempts to order a 100% loaded XR7 I gave up.

Ford's placement of the horn button on the end of the turn signal stalk during this era was a poor safety decision. What were they thinking? I'm surprised that even passed DOT regulations and that lawsuits didn't follow, when panicked drivers fruitlessly pounded away on the center pad.

Hey , any idea how to tell the difference between the 4.2 and the 5.0 when looking into the engine bay with no stickers?

Using a VIN decoder should tell you the difference.

physically they are identical and neither engine would pull your wet socks off. these are the dark years for v8's . the roller 5.0 engine in late 80s to 90s are a different animal.

I still have my 1980 XR7 bought in Oakland CA in 87 and it runs like new.

The 1980 Cougar standard engine was the 3.3 L6, but you can't find it on the brochures.

1980 Cougar had a choice of 2 8 cylinder engines

Not a big fan of this car BUT it looked way better than the similiar T bird especially with the Two tone paint jobs and the vinyl top. Very informative.

I have owned two of these cougars before, I thought they had a classic look and were pretty decent cars for the time

I had an ‘81 Cougar X-R7, worst car I’ve ever owned, it felt cheap
