Thanks. What a journey down memory lane. I was a teenager when they hit the scene in the 60's and still have their album,Hellbound Train(1972). They actually were active until 2022 when the founding member,Kim Simmonds,passed away. There's a lot of info about them on Wikipedia. Tell Mama is their most recognizable song. They were a blues band,so their fans fit a specific niche. Either you liked them or you didn't. They toured for nearly 60 years,so there you go.

Wow! Savoy Brown! One of my very favorite bands from my college days! Every other dorm room I went by would have this song playing. This is the album that came out after Lonesome Dave and the others left to form Foghat. Kim Simmonds is the guitarist and Savoy Brown was his band. He passed away about a year ago but kept playing and recording until the end. I actually got to see him a couple of times after I moved to Maine a few years back, he still knew how to rock out! Peace! (My recommendation for another song would be "Leaving Again", lots of guitar and Lonesome Dave is singing on it. Foghat covered it on their first album, a harder rock version)

I was hoping you would get to Savoy Brown. Tell Mama is a great one to start with and I'm glad you did the album track and not the cut down radio version. There were a lot of personnel changes over the years. A Hard Way to Go, Street Corner Talking and Wang Dang Doodle are good ones to follow up with. Lots of great stuff. Hellhound Train is my favorite and will blow your minds. By the way, the accent on Savoy is slightly on the Sa and not the voy. Kim Simmonds kept the band going until recently. He passed last December just after turning 75.

Oh! Boy! I have been pushing them for a bit. Good rabbit hole. Any song is great! Very diverse blues based with many incarnations. Kim Simmonds leads the band. One of my fav guitar players.Thanks! I recommend an earlier incarnation with the album Raw Sienna lotsa guitar and lotsa HORNS. I believe this incarnation became Foghat after Kim Simmonds moved to another sound. Savoy always has plenty of good guitar. This song is a bit more country based than most.

We just recently lost the great Kim Simmonds, guitarist and founding member that was the only member to play in all the different versions of this band. A couple members from Savoy Brown left to form Foghat. My favorite album of theirs was Jack The Toad, but the only one I own now is Hellbound Train. Good choice, but there's a lot of good Savoy Brown out there, if you want some more.

@@jameskirschling7887 When those guys left most people thought it was the end of SB. But Kim Simmonds didn't want it to end so he went to work. He raided the band Chicken Shack, recruiting their rhythm section & keyboardist Paul Raymond. He then found a great singer, Dave Walker, playing in London pubs & signed him up. This version of the band put out 2 of the groups best selling albums, Street Corner Talking and Hellbound Train.

I saw them with their original lineup in the late 60's. They had a cult following in Maine where I lived. Their live album Blue Matter was a big hit but only in the "cult". The core of Savoy formed Foghat and this band was the second iteration of SB. Guitarist Kim Simmons was their heart. There is a video of them doing this live and Kim absolutely shreds on slide. An unsung guitar god

They DO have that guitar all the time…Kim Simmonds (guitar) is the founder and guitarist and main songwriter here. Vocals are courtesy of Dave Walker, later briefly lead singer for Fleetwood Mac and (even more briefly) Black Sabbath. Another Fleetwood Mac connection is keyboardist Paul Raymond, who had been in Chicken Shack with Christine Perfect (not yet McVie back then). I don't know if the fact that Paul and Christine were former bandmates is why the two bands toured together in 1972, but I know that when Fleetwood Mac had to cut the tour short (guitarist Danny Kirwan got himself fired), they hired Dave away, because their manager was tired of losing guitarists and thought the band needed reorganize behind a big sexy lead singer…an Ozzy, an Ian Gillan, a Robert Plant, a Roger Daltrey. This was of course a ridiculous idea for *Fleetwood Mac* , which is why Dave was gone after one album there. (Still better than "Ozzy quit, help us, Dave!"/"Ozzy's back, sorry Dave", as happened to Walker down the road.) This album was a heck of a comeback for Simmonds, considering that he had just had the ENTIRE BAND quit on him the year before. On the previous album, Simmonds shared guitar and writing duties with Lonesome Dave Peverett, but Dave decided to go out on his own, took the rhythm section (bassist Tone Stevens, drummer Roger Earl) with him and went and formed Foghat. Damn good rebound by Kim here.
@stevemccooleq
@stevemccooleq 3 месяца назад
Kim lost his rhythm section & 2nd guitar to Foghat so he promptly raided Chicken Shack for their rhythm section and guitarist/keyboardist Raymond. He then discovered Dave Walker singing in London pubs and had an all new band! There was very little animosity between Kim & the 3 who left to form Foghat. They simply wanted to try a more hard rock blues style and Kim wanted to stay with a more traditional or jazzy blues sound.
