I strongly recommend you go back to the Everest region and hike the Three Passes trek - this partly overlaps with the EBC trek but is less crowded (you get to do a side trip to EBC if you want) but otherwise you spend time on quieter trails and more of the trail gets you amongst real, working communities instead of trekking-oriented villages like some of those on the EBC trek. The Three Passes trek also gives you many epic views of Everest (some actually with Everest being the tallest peak on the horizon as compared to most of the views on the EBC trek where Everest looks "smaller" than surrounding peaks because it's set further back). You can totally do the Three Passes without any guides but it is a more demanding trek and you do still need to obtain all the relevant permits.
@@Moloch2024 Kongma La (18,209 ft / 5,550 m), Cho La (17,782 ft / 5,420 m), and Renjo La (17,560 ft / 5,360 m). And that's generally the recommended order in which to attempt them. Definitely not recommended as a first trek in Nepal (although people do do it as a first trek!). It's also best to plan plenty of wiggle-room time-wise to allow for weather delays, especially at the passes themselves.
Yay, I’ll add it to my list. Will come back to trek in Nepal again late 2022 but will probably do the Annapurna region to mix it up. Maybe a few years down the road! Thanks
@@kraigadams Great! I so love your videos and I will very much look forward to your take on the Three Passes when the time comes! Nepal has given me my favourite hiking trips anywhere in the world so far and I'm sure I'll keep going back for more.
EBC! Did this trek in Oct 2019. Amazing mountains. They just never seem to end. Was a life long dream for me. Can’t wait to get back to Nepal to see more.
You are absolutely right when you say that just to be able to see Everest once justifies a trip to Nepal and the effort of a trek. It was the same for me when I climbed Mera Peak. It was my whole life dream to see Everest and I was able to experience that on the Mera Peak trek. Greetings from Tyrol/Austria Andy
After 2 years of lockdown we Australians are finally allowed to leave! Me and the mrs are doing EBC via Jiri and the 3 passes as our first destination in our 11 month backpacking trip. I absolutely cannot wait and this video has inspired and enriched me with confidence. Thank you brother.
You'll love the walk from Jiri! Those first few days before reaching the main tourist trail are beautiful and peaceful. Some really nice small villages and lodges there. Make sure you add Pikey peak to your route, it's a little extra but you get AMAZING views of the big peaks at sunrise, totally worth it
I loved how much I learned through this without being overwhelmed at all. Hike, camera, etc. all of it. But most of all I still very much enjoy the dry humor. Thanks for keeping it very real and still making sure you experience all the fun things and saying yes to what life is offering you.
Really enjoying having this breakdown separately. We did EBC a few years ago and had an amazing time. Watching this and the main video brought back so many incredible memories. Thank you. 👍🏻
What an amazing experience. I really felt that....."YES...finally on my own!". It's always great when you can do your own thing at your own pace. Fantastic Kraig!
Consistently beautiful inspiring work Kraig. You are not getting old at all. 30 is super young. Thank you for being you and listening to and being guided by your heart and soul always. In One Heart, Max
I went in 2017 - i'm 49 years old and when I was a kid EVEREST was a place that EXPLORERS went to and always held a certain mystique. To be there was just the most amazing experience The trek is tough in places. the altitude certainly affects to like nothing else. The food can get monotonous. it lacks texture more than anything. I said I would never go back but 18 months later I summited Mera Peak at 6461m (21,198ft). I plan to go higher to 7000m in 2022 and in 2023i aim for an 8000m peak (Mansalu). I highly recommend EBC too. it just gives you a feeling that is really hard to describe. (prayer wheels is the word you were looking for)
I went to Argentina in January this year - summit of Aconcagua was the aim - unfortunately I only got to Camp 2 at about 5500m - the wind and uncertainty of when it would abate meant I came down without summiting ( i'd acclimatised so well - no sickness no headaches ) its a tough place to go !
I love this video. Really appreciate all of your bts thoughts. Thanks, Kraig. (your small description of the significance of sound design on your silent movies was so helpful)
I have been watching your videos from last year. I love your idea of hiking alone up in the mountains and lost in the nature. As a viewer form Nepal, you make me so happy doing all the hikes even in Nepal and even more after knowing that you are coming back to Nepal for more hike. Thank you so much for a such a huge contribution to promote Tourism Of Nepal 👏👏🗻🗻🇳🇵
During the pandemic, I did this hike virtually using Ifit on my treadmill. It was great to see it from your perspective, Im looking forward to my chance sometime in the future.
Really great. I'm not even a hiker and I completely enjoy your hikes and info. Your amazing locations and views make watching you so wonderful. ❤️ Love little Sasha ❤️So Washington next, from there, Baker is beautiful. Can't wait to see. Thanks ❤️
Thank you for your video Kraig! They are awesome and inspiring! This is Nigel from Hong Kong, Had supported with Super Thanks, please do more great videos! As a documentary maker, backpacker and hiker myself, always finding a way to shoot nature, hiking in a good way. However, it's so hard! I think you understand what I mean, it will take 150%-200% more time to shoot a route, camera set up, drone flying takes a loooooong time! and it's not the only thing, it also need experience of preparing the lightest pack and gears, tent, cloth, food, battery and charging, organizing, discipline and physical condition etc... And I was stuck on shoot hiking because there are lots of shooting form in my mind that makes great content, and it can take so much time and effort. And when I saw the way you shoot, It solve all problems, I can see how you minimize the shooting time with the best result, and it tells the story! Your videos totally inspire me to resume my undone hiking project, and it will be shot next week. Thanks again for the videos, saw some of your route that i hike before reminds me the good times also. Next time if you come to Hong Kong, Iet me show you some of the hidden, special and beautiful Hiking route. Peace!
I understand the need to do your own thing and hike unencumbered by others who might hold you back. But it can be a nice change of pace every once in a while. Well done man. Looking to make it out there myself one day. Thank you for the experience.
Such videos, even though lengthy, are very enjoyable ! Somehow listening to you is a very calming exp. This whole EBC trek get together, am sure has provided you with more friends and exposure, expanding more horizons - would be only good for you and the channel in the long term considering possible collaborations/getting more contacts is always good. Lastly, we all love your way of silent hiking, story telling, excellent film making and thought projection - please continue doing that. All the very best for upcoming videos!! Cheers !
I ate Dahl Bat every day on my Annapurna circuit hike. There is enough vartiation in how it's prepared to keep it interesting. And you are correct when you say that it is a perfect balance of everything you need while trekking. I hope to get back to do the EBC trek some day. By the way, I did Annapurna at age 55 so you aren't getting to old to world travel quite yet. ;-)
Video credit for this amazing shot. This video is astoundingly. We really appreciate everything that you do. This is exactly why we're following you !!!!
Thank you for the video Kraig. I really enjoy the behind the scenes videos of your trips. This one was especially interesting, given the World Vlog Challenge aspect. Time to go back and watch the silent video armed with my behind the scenes knowledge.
I would love this video as a podcast. For every trip and solo hike video you’ve made. Revisiting the trips, talking about challenges and little side stories. Experiences that we don’t get to see in your videos. Love your calm personality and humour so I think it would be fun to listen to :)
this seems so special and I’m so glad the trip went so smoothly for you! i guess that’s what happens when you hike with the open minded/flexible attitude you had. hope to make this hike someday!
This is one of my latest dreams. To be able to hike through the Himalayas and look with my own eyes at the Everest peak just sounds like bliss. Gonna thru hike the AT after I graduate high school and I'm gonna see where my backpacking passion takes me. Thanks for sharing your expedition
I love all your videos..... you’re amazing. EBC is my #1 bucket list dream..... but I’ll probably have to live it through your eyes - so thank you. I waited all the way until the end to meet Sasha... I got scared for a second that you’d forget 😜. She’s adorable.
Thank you for sharing all details of your trip. I'd love to hike to Everest Base Camp someday... I also recently purchased the same lens Sony 20mm f1.8. I love it too!
Hi Kraig. Thanks for all the great videos! Your videos and music are what inspired me to start making my own videos. This is for my mother who can no longer walk. She was so happy to see it. You are my teacher. I look forward to your continued success. Thank you very much.
The best part of my Country is , Non of the Tourist will regret after traveling this beautiful nation instead they are blessed to have such a wonderful life time experience. No wonder Nepal is one of the most beautiful country on a planet with great hospitality and beautiful People. I had traveled 15 countries but i never heard people had complain about Nepal . Thank you for being here and keep coming again and again . Namaste 🙏
Wow, Mingma David Sherpa? I'm watching a documentary on him along with a Nepalese team in 2019 that climbed all of the 8000m + peaks in a single climbing season .... mind blown.
Thanks for this. Loved the EBC video and now I know the back story. I almost ran Grindstone this year and saw your video of your brother I think? Of course love the channel. Thanks!
it's sometimes more important to watch "the behind the scene" of the main video ! so interesting to have your viewpoint and your emotions. And so important too heard you speaking and debriefing thanks for that kraig! and keep going you're amazing man
Loved it! Great shots, beautiful place! I got curious with one shot. What are the arched vertical lines on the night shot of the mountain, with the sun setting ou rising. It shows on 28:45 of this video too. Thanks! Keep up with the great work! Cheers from southern Brazil
I always thought the hike up there looks more interesting than climbing Everest. Can’t wait to watch the video. Please do books that changed your life 🙏🏼
I did the Everest trek from Lamosangu in 1974, just after it opened. You can still do a long trek from Jiri which is about 4 days in from Lamosangu. For directions, we had an old dyeline map which was very basic but you got by asking people the way. We got robbed at Lamjura Pass and later attacked by dogs plus we got lost a few times, once for 2 days in a canyon during which we ran out of food but nothing serious. Pheriche consisted of one mud brick hut, half buried in the permafrost and Gorak Shep did not exist. Unfortunately, I'm getting too old for trekking but it remains a lifetime highlight.
Ideas for videos: - Hike tutorial - live editing a video (sound extraction, story telling, sound design, story board or not.. ) - Updated hiking gear 2022 - Drone operations (best practices, experience with people reacting negatively, problems with drone restrictions) - Washing clothes on a longer drip (special soap, products, anti odor) - Wild animal encounters and/or prep to stay safe ...
Nice breakdown, thank you. Manaslu is a fantastic trek. It's more calm and not as touristy. Annapurna is great as well, the view after you cross the pass and can see glimpses of Mustang when you hike down to Muktinath is just mindblowing. It's more crowded though and I think they have a road now (or are working on it). Anyway your new homies probably told you already all about it 😃🇳🇵
39:15 I will defend Big Bend until I die - I've hiked all over the world but the Chisos and Guadalupe Mountains are still some of my most favorite places on Earth. The desert has my heart
This is so cool! I love getting to see the behind the scenes to your videos!!! WINTER KRAIG IS COMINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!! :D Also Sasha is getting so big omg 😱
The "things" you turn as you pass on the left side are called "Prayer Wheels" (or "Mani" Wheels in Tibetan)! They are inscribed with Buddhist mantras and contain rolls of scripture or prayers inside. Turning the prayer wheel (with intention!) can be used as a part of the person's daily meditation practice and to build wisdom and "good karma" and intentionally put aside negative energy and bad karma.
Hello Kraig. Huge fan from Nepal and really enjoyed the everest and mardi video as well. You should really do the manaslu circuit if you plan to visit nepal again. The diversity of landscape and the views of mountains that manaslu offers is unmatched. Well whichever trek you plan to do can’t wait to see you here again.
Thanks for sharing your experience and backpacking trip. I already put some of your trips in my to do list. Did you ever check your backpack as checked luggage?
Would you also make a how-to video about the hike please? This vid was really fun but didn't really say much about the experience itself, advice, how to prep for food, etc. Thanks so much
Hi Kraig, I'll be shooting a doc at EBC in May! Love your stuff!! I'm using the Mavic 2 Pro. We're finalizing permits now. Wondered if you ran into any weather related problems while flying. Thanks!
Hey! Would be amazing if maybe the distance and elevation gains measurements could also be on kms and meters! (I think miles are easily converted but I'm completely lost with ft elevation gain) Great fan of your work! Have a nice day. :)
