refreshing perspective as I listen to this video in 2023. as a soon to be new gun owner many of these youtube channels do a disservice to us, rather than educate us.
Great topic Dave. Bob Keller repeatedly stresses the importance of mastering the fundamentals and mindset, not the fastest or most flashy draw. The basics work if the mindset is right when things get real. I used to train and promote MMA and saw it time and again...good trainees do not always = good fighters when the cage doors close.
My martial arts teachers once told me in my very early years that the only legitimate reason for studying martial arts was to get you into such great physical condition that you could outrun any potential attacker. They were not purely jesting. You should avoid ever being in a situation where a conflict occurs, that includes not letting your ego get you into such a situation. If something none the less looks like a conflict might happen, you should de-escalate it or extricate yourself as expeditiously as possible. If a fight still happens, it is because you have already utterly failed with both previous imperatives.
Dave, thanks for another informational video . This idea particularly hits home for me in regards to the ‘fighting mindset’. I’ve never been in a gun fight(nor do I want to) however I come from a background in competitive martial arts and boxing . Many of the examples you cite of training vs. actual performance I’ve seen in a fist/fist scenario and it’s pretty interesting to hear from someone as experienced as you that this happens in the realm of gun fighting. I’ve always drawn the conclusion that fighting is all about mindset regardless of what style or medium that takes ; your wisdom reinforces that. Thank you
Is that a good thing I’m thinking no. I could live a long time without carrying with most of you tube content. At my age I’ll go with a gun to old to fight. And yes walking away is always preferable.
Great advise, pay attention and avoid. Nice to see you drinking an American made beverage. If you like Makers Mark, give their cask strength a try, good stuff.
