A wonderful co-worker recommended I read The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King because of the appearance of Randal Flagg. I share some of my thoughts here (and some of my thoughts will make more sense appearing in the videos that are part of Season 2 of the Dark Tower reading project which is still the process of being filmed).

Nobody ever talks about this book when they talk about Stephen King. I loved Eyes of the Dragon.

Randall Flagg puts the Joker to Shame. Stephen King is a Masterclass storyteller. The fact that he switches up from IT, to The Stand, to The Dark Tower, and The Mist. The man has a beautiful mind in his head. I love this mans books.

Shawn Shaw Very interesting. Without spoiling any story that has Randall Flagg in it; what makes this character comparable to ‘Joker’ and from what I can tell better in your opinion?

You're one of the few people who have liked this book. Because of the "YA factor." If you put that into context, then it will be much more enjoyable to read. Most people probably crack it open, expecting a "Game of Thrones" experience, and are sadly disappointed.

I really enjoyed reading this one, I sometimes feel like I'm one of the few people who's read like 30+ King books and still likes it though!

Hello Emily. I have only recently discovered your videos but really enjoy them, especially your Stephen King reviews. Eyes of the Dragon is one of the King novels I have yet to read but from what you say I think I will enjoy it. After that it's time I gave the Dark Tower series a try! Looking forward to more of your reviews.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying my Stephen King videos. I hope you do pick up Eyes of the Dragon -- it's a fun read! And definitely go for the Dark Tower. Push through the first book (it's not the best) because the series is amazing! :)

It has a lot of dead dragons, taxidermized on the walls. To my memory there are no living dragons, but it's been a few years.

hello i have been watching your channel since the beginning of time. I always loved your thoughts on literature and especially your love for Stephen King. I am wondering since you also study literature, what would you do if you were assign a book you do not particularly like? How do you actually finish reading the assign books and write analysis for it? Sometimes I find the assigned books not as interesting and I always struggle to finish reading.... :( thank you so much for taking your time reading my comments. Love your videos and thoughts on literature. XD

Hi there! Thank you for your kind words and support :) [This is actually a post script: I wrote the following response assuming that you are a university or college student that has some freedom to choose your courses. If you are in high school, most of this advice still applies.] So I am one of those special snowflakes that actually did all of my readings. (That is 100% not a common experience. Most people make friends and go do social things. And I definitely sacrificed that during my undergrad.) I know a lot of people in English courses don't do all the readings. They just read what appeals to them and then write on what they read. Most essays and exams give wiggle room, because profs/teachers assume that you haven't read everything. But I really wanted to finish every assigned reading because I was paying for my education and even if the book wasn't a new favorite, being able to participate in lecture and tutorial was valuable to my experience as a student, scholar, and reader. Maybe framing the reading in the context of what finishing it will help you accomplish as a student and a reader might be helpful? I hated reading almost all of the novels in my 20th century British and Irish literature class but LOVED the lessons the prof pulled out of them during lecture. I actually carried forward some of the ideas from that course into a Harry Potter course I took in my BA and a trauma literature course I took during my MA. So being familiar enough with the material to engage with and understand the lectures helped me to grapple with different literature later on in my studies. There was value in pushing through the texts. Something that might be helpful for books you really don't like is to break them into manageable pieces. I always broke my assigned readings into small chunks with dated sticky notes. The sticky notes were my "read-by" date. So if I really wasn't enjoying what I was reading, I knew that I only had to read until I hit the next sticky note and then I was allowed to put the book down for a bit and either switch to reading for fun or reading for another class. As for analysis, I find that most profs/teachers give a pretty broad variety of essay topics that allow for you to bring your own interests into the class. (Sometimes they even have the "your idea" option that just requires you to go to them with a proposed topic for approval.) It might mean picking a more challenging or open-ended essay topic that really requires you to develop a strong thesis statement. And while it may seem scary, profs and teaching assistants are usually pretty jazzed when folks come to talk to them during office hours. Nobody really wants to read an essay that we can tell has zero passion and effort put into it. (The amount of wine consumed by teaching assistants during marking seasons is astounding.) Talking through an essay topic, developing a thesis statement that you're excited to write about can make all the difference with how you feel about actually doing an assignment. [This is the bit that really doesn't apply if you are in high school.] Finally, my last bit of advice would be to really research the courses you take. If you have the option to choose you schedule and your courses, see what other people have said about the professor/teacher and the course. You can usually find old reading lists on school websites to kind of get a sense of what is generally taught in that course. Also talk to other folks in your program or in the department if you can and see which courses they have taken and get their review of the prof/course material. Hopefully you find some of this helpful. Wishing you all the best in your studies :)

I think after this King wrote 'Misery' thanks to people's response to 'Eyes of the Dragon' being "You aren't a fantasy author, you write horror books, write horror books!"

A shame we never saw Thomas and Dennis appear in the Dark Tower books and have their confrontation with Flagg, would've been apt, in my opinion. They're even mentioned in the Drawing of the Three, and Delain is confirmed to be a part of In-World in the Little Sisters of Eluria. A missed opportunity... : (

This was the first book I ever read in its entirety(3 times). It also is the only Stephen I have been able to read. I find his writing to be tedious and thus why I prefer most of his books condensed into movies and mini series.
