Thousands of flights were cancelled and many were forced to land after the major Microsoft outage that affected travel across the world. The outage, that happened after a routine software update, caused long lines and left travelers without plans.

20 years ago, I took a computer class where we were taught that updates should be done on a single computer disconnected from the rest of the network. If the update fails, only one machine is lost.

Just to be clear, the airplanes themselves were not affected by the update, it wasn’t the fact that it was an “older plane” that made it where that flight was less affected. it was airline operations centers that were affected and planes could not depart because Ops couldn’t get info to crews needed to depart and gate agents and check in agents couldn’t get the necessary info to board flights. At some airports the pipes needed to refuel planes failed too so they needed to use traditional fuel trucks, which also takes longer. But the planes themselves were not affected by the crowd strike issue.

I love how airlines get fined but the customers don’t get their money back and after those fines airlines just raise prices so.. the customer just gets fkd twice. I mean.. there’s no right answer here but figuring out faulty infrastructure and transportation might be a thing huh?

It was a CrowdStrike outage not Microsoft

Crowdstrike provides security software for Microsoft and the issue was a result of a content update to windows hosts. It's not actually wrong to say it was a Microsoft outage since it was an issue involving windows. Crowdstrike caused the problem but windows delivered it to the masses.

@@brassman7599 Incorrect. Individual banks, investment companies, airlines, etc., are customers who purchase enterprise security suites directly rom Crowdstrike. They may choose to implement it on Microsoft hardware, or on Apple or Linux. The update came from Crowdstrike, not from Microsoft. Windows didn't deliver anything to the masses related to this outage.

It is. It’s a fairly standard business practice that updates are done on a single computer disconnected from the network so if it fails, only one machine is lost.

so is it the customers fault then? Are they blaming this on weather or is it an act of god? Someone is liable here, and it's definitely the airlines for having faulty system. This is an avoidable circumstance by the airlines. So it's not the customer that are very dumb. No one is dumb here

This happened to me. I was at the airport for Delta. My flight was supposed to board at 10:45 PM, but it never happened because the global outage.

You sound tatarded. There’s no brand loyalty for most ppl when flying. Considerations for price, layovers, time of flight, are all that matter to most ppl; so there are no” kind of ppl” who fly spirit.

Delta got us good. We are stuck in Maui for 2 extra days. Before you say thats a good thing, they wouldnt give us any vouchers for anything, claiming the computers dont work, and the employees are not allowed to say we'll be reimbursed. They booked us on Hawaiian airlines to get us home, but they put our 4 year old in a separate seat. We cant get any guarantee about our luggage transferring from Hawaiian to Delta, and we lost the value of our upgrades. I'll never fly Delta again. I get the pleasure of putting 2 additional nights and food for 4 in Maui on my credit card in the hopes I get reimbursed later.
