Zach calls up some members of the crew to talk about their favorite rut stories from chasing to lockdowns to decoy hunts. Hopefully this can get you fired up for November as it closes in. Drop a comment of your favorite rut memory below!
I have my best story from the rut. I was around age 12 (47 now) deer season is the only time i got with my dad, we went out to public land, he sat me under a cliff edge and said hed be back, to set still. So i did. Me and my 30-30. Few hours later he came back and said "c'mon. Youre not gonna believe what i shot". He led me to a huge "buck" 13 points, and large. He said "look at it close. Whats wrong with it"? I couldn't see a problem😂. He lifted its hind leg and pointed out it was a doe. A racked doe. He told me to watch it while he went to get the jeep. As i sat staring at this freak, i hear what sounds like walking (steps) in the leaves. I think oh no. Im finna have to defend dads deer from a hunter,😂 but, it was a spike buck following the path the man lady deer had taken. Thats the first live buck i had ever saw, i shot him at 10 yards, and ill never forget me and dad going to the local deer check station, it was the best day ever. Some of u may remember my previous comment, i lost my dad last December during late muzzleloader in Kentucky. Gonna struggle this year, typing this out has tears rolling. Geeze.
My most interesting rut story happened back in the early 80's when my brother and I had only been archery hunting seriously for a few years. We both had recently bought our first "compound bows" the year before. I had hunted with a recurve and had missed a few bucks but had only shot one small buck with my compound and my brother Tom had not killed a buck during the archery season yet. He came over to where I was working and living in Wisconsin to hunt. It was early November and the rut was on. The first night he hit a nice buck but couldn't find blood and didn't know where he had hit it. The weather was stable so we decided to wait till morning. We called our father and he was going to come over to help in the morning. I said I would go out and sit for an hour or so and then meet them at the spot where the buck had been hit. Shortly after dawn a doe came through followed closely by a small buck, on a runway just too far to shoot. I was ready to get down and I heard another deer coming down the same runway and it was another small buck. I stayed put and watched two more bucks come down the same runway following the doe scent. Finally i told myself I wasn't going to sit in that tree and watch anymore. I got down and walked closer to the runway where I could get a shot to it and stayed downwind of where all the bucks had traveled. Not 5 minutes went by and a 5th buck came along and I was able to get a shot. We recovered both bucks and had a great day with our father who got to take part in both of his sons archery kills. Everyone has a good story and i loved all the ones told and shown here. They all have a special reason they are remembered and special to us!
Great stories THP guys!! The rut is just starting up here is Wisconsin….a Halloween snow blizzard day here in Waukesha. Keep up the great videos guys!!
I wish I could find my way to get a group to do this !!!! I want nothing more than to do this full time I camp every weekend rain or shine , I’m a die hard bow hunter as well and I won’t let weather stop that lol… rut action is what it’s about to an exstent . The way your heart races thru your chest and how it all comes together for that one moment then…. BACKSTRAPS BABY!!!!!!! In a non prison movie way…. I love you guys and hope you have a blessed season and as always be safe!!!! Thanks as always #tattooharvester #beararchery
I’m wounder why the change , last year I seen so many state land bucks and this year I’m having a hard time I’m just now getting to where I’m finding some decent sign! Slow start this year for myself ! But hopefully with some of your tactics and tips I will put a stud on the ground !
I think the main reason is I would do what I have heard called "a midwest goodbye" and just keep acting like I was going to hangup but then just keep talking haha!
I have been filming hunts since early September and I elk hunted for about 7 days at the end of Sept. Saving most of that content for next summer/early fall. But I am working on a video with Jake right now and then we will be bow hunting deer again by the end of this week.
