THR Full Oscar Director's Roundtable: Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Damien Chazelle, & More 

I'll be honest, I just wanted to listen to Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson.

Although Mira seems a bit out of place, since everyone here seems to be American directors I appreciate her being there. She has an interesting perspective on things and helps broaden the discussion and our perception outside of just the US film industry.

I'd love to hear Mel and Denzel discuss anything, anything at all. They'd make even the most mundane of things interesting. They're two ordinary people that have extraordinary abilities to move people with how they convey a story. True giants of film and genuinely decent people.

Hacksaw ridge was phenomenal. Mel might be the most underrated film director ever

In the immortal words of South Park, "say what you want about Mel Gibson, but that son of a bitch knows about story structure".

A Denzel and Gibson collab is what we need

Mel gives off this kind of no-bs unedited sincerity... Love it.

Mel Gibson is a legend, he talks and walk the walk.

You can tell why Gibson and Denzel are as famous as they are. They are so captivating, so enthralling. I hang on every word from both of them. What amazing performers.

Mel is a director who can shoot an Oscar worthy movie without any professional actors. This guy literally can take any material, be that actor or script, and make it great art.

Say what you will about Mel Gibson...but his love of history and storytelling is incredible to witness.

I love Mel honestly. Most of us have terrible, deep rooted issues that escape our control at times. But he is just on another level of intriguing.

When Denzel and Mel talk, they watch each other in such a relatable way...

I love this directors' round table. Great directors, no egos, they waited their turn to tell their answer to questions, they had great anecdotes and stories. I loved it so much I watched every minute of it.

Denzel is just the epitome of class. He is so inspiring. Mel has that crazy intensity that borders on insanity that seems to curse true geniuses.

Denzel @57:58 is one of my favorite moments, outside of meeting him in Germany. Dude is a beautiful human being. Protect him at all costs.

Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson should do a movie together.

Denzel says so much whether he answers or not. The last question he declined and it was as interesting as answering it. The man is pure class. He puts life into it’s proper perspective. Being in his position is a gift that he recognizes. His talent and hard work got him there but still recognizes that he is still very fortunate . If an actor can be a role model it is him!

For all the crap Mel has been given for his personal struggles, the man is an absolute genius. That almost mad-level of genius.

Denzel is a beast. He’s so wisely guarded.

I love Mel Gibson, his movies, his resilience, and his attitude as he strives for greatness. I really enjoyed this .

I could listen to Barry Jenkins talk about movies for days.

The one characteristic that I found so engaging and wonderful with all of them is listening, especially Mel and Denzel because their eyes appear to really focus and absorb all that is happening.

I LOVE Denzel for that single statement about making movies (as compared to real life work stuff): "It ain't that big of a deal".... and especially for the reaction it provoked in Oliver Stone, raising his eyebrow @58:10 ! Mel Gibson's reaction, on the other hand, is exactly the opposite.

I wish Barry Jenkins would have spoken more.

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto was such an insane film....so underrated.

I have great admiration and respect for Mel Gibson...always have. He is truly a majestic talent and a natural genius. Incredibly eloquent when speaking, he engages his peers as he tells his stories, with immense cinviction, passion pr, not to mention profound integrity and honestly....while staying humble. How can you NOT love and admire this artist? Seen all is movies at least 5 times. ALL!

Denzel is a no sugar coated kind of guy. He tells it like it is and his performances are the real deal. He gives 100% in every movie he does. My favorite actor of all time.

That's why I love Denzel. Sending your child overseas as a soldier is hard, "Making a movie is a gift". I love how real he is and ever since the first performance I saw with him in Glory.

Got chills when Barry Jenkins mentioned Chungking Express. A gorgeous movie. If I'd seen it when I was younger, my direction may have changed from writing to film. Loved hearing everyone's early experience with the movies.

I just watched Hacksaw Ridge and its an absolute masterpiece. It's a shame that Mel Gibson has been out of the spotlight he is a one of the greatest actors of our time and deserves that respect. He is also very engaging to listen to. You feel the emotion in everything he conveys. The patriot and Braveheart were pivotal movies of my childhood. Some of my earliest fondest memories were sitting together with my family watching them on a Friday or Saturday night. Sleep overs with friends. So much Talent

Mel Gibson is a force in all he creates 🙏❤️. I listen to Grace for a purpose and Denzel is a very spiritual beautiful heart and soul man 🙏♥️♥️

The passion and integrity of Mel and Denzel, I love those guys.

Mel Gibson’s gifts to western thought such as Braveheart and The Passion are immeasurable. The amount of commitment and courage needed to accomplish films like that can’t be appreciated enough.

This was amazing and the energy coming out of Mel's body is unbelievable. what was really interesting is their line for not telling about themselves unlike actors.

Mel + Denzel = childhood memory- Brave Hart, Man on Fire, Lethal Weapon, the bone collector, The Patriot, the siege, payback - such legends sitting in one table. Thanks for the incredible memories.

This sentence really makes me admire Mel Gibson so much. He LOVES telling stories & small pieces of a larger picture that are forgotten.

Being a teenager in Australia the First Mad Max movie by George Miller was already legendary before Mel did the second one. In that it was made with a fairly low budget.The camera work on that was made the film even more legendary . Then when he did Gallipoli he really did an outstanding acting job. He possibly got the feel for making incredible stories with lower ranking stars and beautiful camera work

Denzel is probably one of the coolest cats that ever lived.

Gibson, what a profound statement: "When we're kicked into this planet ... we need to hear these things to reaffirm who we are in relation to our planet, our environs and everyone else".

This is my favorite thing to watch. Filmmakers talking about every little aspect of the art. I missed my calling as a filmmaker. Listening to this is like watching a life you could've had through a 2way mirror.

I can't be the only person happy to see Mel Gibson doing well again. I saw Hacksaw Ridge and with Saving Private Ryan being the gold standard for WWII movies, Hacksaw Ridge is a close second. This man knows movies regardless of what he said years ago

When Denzel smiles….it lights up the world.

The balance of different experience at the table was perfect. Each person gave important and thoughtful life experience that a young and upcoming director/actor/film maker would appreciate. The importance of other jobs that they had to do BEFORE they got where they are. That failures will happen but to keep moving forward.

Anybody artistic minded, this is pure gold. Addictive. Let me give advice to any young or older person who is artistic minded and has an artistic dream (or dreams)- go for it full boar and never settle for a “regular 9 to 5”. Dedicate time to your passion everyday and something will eventually break for you. You do NOT want to end up 48 one day working in a factory hating life and only being bitter when you watch things like this because you never truly attempted your dreams. Even now, it’s amazing listening to these greats talk about the little things. Sometimes it’s the little info they give that causes someone to say “hey that’s just like me!”. From that the next thought should be “if they tried and succeeded maybe I can too”. This was very inspirational.

How have I not seen this sooner? Love how Mel & Denzel are so different in their approach and energy but both are & were my favorite actors. Two titans of the craft that I wish would do a flick or two together. 🙏🏽

Mel is like the wise old men; when he start to speak, everybody just listen with full attention. This is respect.

I enjoy these Directors videos enormously; especially when some of these Directors are also actors.

Denzel and Mel are my favorites growing up. Denzel is super smart, no nonsense, honest. Mel's energy is off the wall, amazing storyteller, fearless, passionate.

They should let Denzel moderate the roundtable.

When pressed to relay certain things from his past Denzel chose to forego and stood his ground ... but the brevity of his words and the matter of fact way he moves from one point to the next is brilliant to see... the most inspiring man at the table that's for damn sure... and then there's Mel😁

I’ve been inspired by musicians left and right but it wasn’t until I started getting serious about making music myself that I started looking to directors & actors for inspiration. The jobs are different, but the drive to create and participate in the moment is never lost to me

I could sit and listen to Mel just tell stories.

When Mel and Denzel talk, it’s storytelling at its finest. Especially Mel. They demand the attention, in a good way.
