until you realize how expensive they are. I use this kind of crap for gasfitting, but since it's never bigger than 1 1/4" I just use a manual threader.

Rigid does make the best stock & dies. Have a set of 1/2 to 2" that were my grandfathers from 75 years ago. Replaced the cutting dies on most of them. Years ago old timers would rebuild 18 &24" Rigid pipe wrenches by replacing lower teeth and entire top j hook.

Great stuff Steven, been a few years since i've seen a pipe threader at work. All the milking parlours used to use galv pipe for the vacuum lines but they have moved over to pvc like you use for furnace vents now.

Great video. I just use the hand dies now. I don't do a lot of piping in commercial service. That Oster is a nice machine.

Steve, this is good stuff. One thing I differ on is cutting those extra couple threads once the die teeth are flush with the end of the pipe. Any threads cut beyond that are going to have exactly the same major and minor diameter, ie they are going to be straight threads. With this discontinuity in the taper profile, these threads will reach an interference fit before the others do and require higher torque to squeeze them down to the taper profile. Two extra threads is not a big deal. Four and there might be problems like a small leak opening up if the pipe is subjected to bending movements. You'd probably never see it at 7" w.c., but it sure creeps up with compressed air.

+EightiesTV i find with 2 thread pass its the same as a pipe or nipple thread when i screw on a fitting it goes in all the way not 1/2 the way. do what ever works for you i always say .

Great video, Steve! I work for a steel plant that sales different style of piping. I'm going to attempt replacing all my gas piping in my home. So, I'm going this route as it will be cheaper. I know this is an older video, but it's a good one. :) I thought that I would mention people can rent this type of machine by the day instead of having to purchase one. At first I was going to replace the copper pipe going from my water heater into the crawl space, but I couldn't figure out what type (L, M, or K) of copper it is. For some reason, they ran about 5' of copper from water heater, and then tied into black pipe in crawl space. Actually, they did this on my stove, dryer, and water heater. I did notice some type of manifold or something in crawl space that I had no clue what it was... it's tied into the black pipe... guess I may have to replace it too. lol

Great video, It must have taken quite a while to set that up. Very good explanation and advantages of portability with the Oster power vice. I would like to see one threaded with no power. Also learned that you can thread a pipe thats overhead. You have to do one of those next time the opportunity is there... That would be a challenge. Its those things that seem to present themselves to us and then say, "how am I going to do that without tearing down the whole place... I learned steam many years ago using Rector Seal #5. I learned later a better sealant for pipe by Hercules called Grip. From the odor, I could tell it was a sealant I used in the 60s called Indian Head Gasket cement. I believe its a shellac based sealant. It seals the best of all the thread sealants I've used including leak-tite.

It would be interesting to talk about compensations when cutting and threading. what to add or subtract when measuring face to center, center to center, face to face, ect.
@stevenlavimoniere
@stevenlavimoniere 10 лет назад
i usally measure the fitting i am using with a tape measure in my hand to determand the proper center to end take of i always measure center to center then deduct the centers for my end to end cuts usally 1"black fitting take out 1" ,,,,3/4 black takes out 7/8 ,,,,1/2 takes out 3/4 " as a rule of thumb 1 1/4 takes out 1 1/8 ,,,1 1/2 takes out 1 1/4",,,,, 2"takes out 1 3/8 center to end..i usally never measure face to face .. center to center works better for me

Good video - I Need to thread some 1 1/4 in pipe here in New England for oil tank vent and fill line. Brought it to Home Depot but they said the pipe was too short to fit in there Rigid threader and couldn’t do it for me. I’m Planning on just purchasing the rigid handheld one that can do up to 2” - Do they work well enough to at-least make a couple threads on some black iron pipe? Also in MA is it legal to use a dresser coupling on oil tanks ? Tried to look it up but couldn’t find anything. Ive seen you use them sometimes

Why the F would you "go a couple of threads pass the end". Now that's just stupid. That means that the end of the pipe wont be tapered by "a couple of threads", it will be a cylindrical straight thread, and therefore that end will prevent the thread form binding along the taper inside the female taper. Then there is no meaning to taperthread at all. The end of the pipe needs to be tapered from the very end, orelse it wont seal..

come on Steve, complaining about rigid's speed while you charge by the hour? and in rigid 300 you can open dies and not have to unthread and all attachments are there so you're not reaching for them. I'm willing to bet, time wise it would be the same, but since you're the boss, I'll have to let you use that one)
