I set out to make three short, animated films for this project (Threads of Connection), inspired by conversations I had with other students on my course. I found that a lot of us had similar experiences moving to London for the first time and some had really unique perspectives on their experiences. We said we all felt a bit better after having these conversations and realising we weren’t alone.
One of the most common topics we discussed how difficult it can be to build new connections and support networks in a big city and as an adult. From there I decided I wanted to make a film showcasing students thoughts and perspectives on living in London, building connections and their advice to upcoming students. I wanted people to be able to speak frankly and honestly, so I set up an online survey where students from all over CSM could submit their thoughts anonymously.
I was surprised with the amount of responses I received and how varied the answers were. I selected several responses and set about designing and animating them. A lot of the visuals for the films came naturally to me, as so many of the students wrote beautifully descriptive responses and after brainstorming some concepts with the other members of the Associates, I was able to begin animating.
I created my own textured brush to simulate the string and threads and really enjoyed the process of animating the films. They have a very loose style which was great to work with. Along with the help of some students from CSM, I was able to get some great voiceovers for the films and that really tied everything together.
I hope by watching these films, students can feel reassured that they’re not alone in their worries and maybe take some of the advice offered from the students in the films!
