In this video I am reviewing the Three 4G Home Broadband service that comes with a ZTE MF286d .
This service uses Three UK Mobile broadband network.
Get up to £40 reward on a wide range of Three products using my referral link aklam.io/87y4pp
See my website fttppro.co.uk for much more on broadband technologies in particular about Full Fibre FTTP which is the best connection you can get.
Mobile Broadband uses Mobile phone signals to deliver broadband into your property.
Speeds can vary depending on the provider and location and what service you can pick up.
5G is the fastest and can support ultrafast speeds over 1Gbps.
Being a wireless service it is not the most reliable nor consistent and can be effected by congestion.
It can also suffer from high latency which can effect internet performance particularly for services such as online gaming.
Before considering this option you need to research it carefully and test to ensure you can get a decent service.

A lot depends on location, I have been using a cheap basic (slow) ZTE USB key style modem with a Smarty sim plugged into my TP-Link router originally as fall back connection it proved more than enough for all the many devices in our home, however we don't have a house full of gamers and most of the internal network is by power line networking. Happy with the 4G speed on a limited modem I have taken the plunge doing away with the FTTC broadband and landline using a proper 4G router and will go 5G when coverage reaches my edge of town.

Thanks for showing the back and connections. Didn't know there was WiFi only modems. Had nothing but problems with Vodafone on a full fibre optic set up. Completely no internet for 2,4 7 and now 10 days. Meanwhile paying for it and streaming services. Latest ones talk of 150 mbs bit I'd just be happy with reliable internet which Vodafone don't provide and require continuous phone calls to an 'offshore' call centre and still take a fortnite to fix it. Imagine if you were running a home business or doing what you do with RU-vid sites. I always thought cable were better but now experiencing fibre with its not affected by traffic or weather mantra not working I'll go with a WiFi 3 modem

@nsmmedia

Hi Herronbill they are two SMA antenna connections and unfortunately due to the locked down firmware you can not switch to just using external and it’s difficult to know if they work properly. During my testing using an external antenna it did not make much difference. You may be able to use custom unlocked firmware to give you more control but that is at your own risk. Checkout my review of Threes 5G home broadband service the Zyxel Nr5103e has a physical switch to use either internal or external antenna and does work really well with external antennas for both 4 and 5G

This may be a simple question. This Three router just relies on a 4G signal and it picks this signal up using the installed sim. I know it does not need a phone line. but It is not a fibre-only broadband router with a coax connection like a virgin mobile router. Is this a good solution for a home router? This sounds like its a mobile 4G router. Take it anywhere and plug it in. Is this right?
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia Год назад
This particular system is designed to work just off 3/4G mobile broadband signals no need for a fixed line. So yep you can take it anywhere(within this country) and as long as you have a good enough signal on Threes network your good to go 👍

@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia 10 месяцев назад
Hi Porcu the router does not come supplied with external antennas just the built in internal ones and while the router does come equipped with external ant ports they don't work very well. If your getting a poor connection and tried the usual things like finding where your nearest mast is and placing the router high up in the window etc then you will need to contact 3 and if they can not resolve cancel the contract. Even if your getting a good signal if the local mast has issues and or congestion then you will face issues its the nature of the beast I'm afraid.

The set up will work brilliantly at his house - my mobile is on smarty and speeds at his house are strong and very fast, after doing a bit of investigation on cellmapper it turns out the local 3 mast is just around the corner 320 meters away crow flying. Getting 70 down 40 up at prime time (19:00 weekdays), At weekends getting close to 100 down 40 up.

Any speed over 10Mbps is good. I was paying £25/month for 11Mbps DS and 1Mbps US. Since switching to Three 4G I get between 80 and 174Mbps DS and about 19 to 34Mbps US. What you fail to mention is that speed test sites are an indication ONLY. They dont measure accurately, to do so would require infinite capacity and minimum and a link with minimal latency to the test server. At no time are any of the above true. When you click "go" the speedtest may be running a 1000 or 10000 simultaneous tests, this is why the software speed gauge will "dither". Not sure if you were testing on Wifi or via Ethernet cable but plugging in an Ethernet cable will eliminate any wireless losses. The other point to note is that all UK traffic is routed via docklands in the UK. Changing the test server to London should result in the ping time dropping a few ms as its routed from London back to the test server (Northampton) in your test. The 4G signal is direction and you can make a reflector from a piece of cardboard lined with aluminium foil. Bend it in a concave shape and place it behind your router to the direction of your 4G mast. I've not tried this myself yet as Im getting a good speed, I live about 1/2 mile from the mast. Those speeds are excellent, so not sure why youre complaining. Full fibre is better but much more expensive. The speed you get on a speed test site is largely academic as all downloads are restricted. The BBC, Amazon, Ebay, Facebook, etc may have to serve 500 million simultaneous web requests. To do this network load balancing is used and restricts the throughput to every device. There is no difference in speed on most sites between ADSL2 and Full Fibre. The only time you can use the full speed is if you are downloading torrents or peer to peer. This was a good video, but you also forgot to mention. 4G is not affected by temperature, EMI, RFI like hybrid Fibre, you can move it around your house if wifi is weak in some rooms, and can take it on holiday if there is a Three network. You can turn it on and off at will, wont cause a fault like ADSL/hybrid fibre and its only about 50 seconds to boot. Good review, thank you.
@nsmmedia
@nsmmedia 2 года назад
Hi Hal, Many thanks for your comment to address the points you raise: You are right speed test services are only an indication of throughput speed. I performed speed tests using multiple services including fast.com and speedtest.net and on speedtest.net using a number of host servers that are of closest proximity to myself overall this gives a good indication of the service throughput speeds. During all the speed test's as observed on the video the latency of the internet connection increased to over 1000ms and caused packet loss (to 8.8.8.8) this indicates an issue with the connection. The tests were all performed using a hard wired connection and it was the only device using that connection during the testing. More real world testing was conducted including loading webpages and watching RU-vid videos the conditions observed showed the connection speed fluctuate and the quality of the connection shown in the RU-vid nerd stats buffer page shows the issues with the connection. What i did not show on the video was while streaming Netflix and Amazon prime the quality would drop from 4K ~16mbps down to HD at times again due to the wide fluctuations in the internet speed. That is a interesting tip regarding boosting the signal and a cheap one I will have to try that out thanks! I agree you do not need fast speeds to load the vast majority of websites and services and indeed having a 1Gbps symmetric connection for example you will come up against bottlenecks form the server end I will be writing a blog about speed on my fttppro.co.uk website soon so keep an eye out for that. 4G is not effected by all the same limitations as hybrid fibre products but is effected by its own set of limitations naturally being a wireless based product and something I demonstrated in the video. Full Fibre connection's vary in price depending on if and who you can get it from in your area in some cases it can work out cheaper than standard broadband packages and even 4G packages when taking actual speed into account. 4G and 5G broadband is certainly going to be a good option for some people like yourself where you can get an acceptable consistent speed and service and do not need things like Static IP's etc . There was a lot I had to cut out of the video to keep the time down and get the balance right (i can talk for hours on such matters) Kind Regards, Nathan

TESTING INTERNET SPEED WHILE HAVING [testing] ONLY 1 DEVICE IS NONSENSE! SPEED DEPENDS ON LOCATION AND ONLY THEN ON DEVICE. For me in my location my cat12 4g modem gives me about 320Mb/s speed. If i take it to other place, other house, street, city..other cell tower it will NOT produce the same speed. SO whne you show speed you showing speed of your location, cell load and so on. Other people may have tripple the speed you having or 3 times slower :) I always miss this information in such video. Not everybody is knowledgeble like i am. and they do believe the speeds they see.
