For those coming to this a year later, Mindustry has massively changed since this. It is now an open "planet", the levels are just spots on the planet - some pre-generated, some seed-generated.
And it is about to get another massive update. The version of mindustry featured in the video is v5, as of now there is an unfinished version of v7 available for free. It's buggy but has quite a lot of content
This major update can also tip your research tree over if you played before it, because some locations have new reqs to complete as well as new factories.
Mindustry is also available on IOS and Android, has Cross Plattform Multiplayer if I'm not mistaken, and has a classic "Edition" for those who don't like the new stuff. : )
@@randomaccount6435 yee like literally all you need to do is copy and paste the name of the person who made it and what the mod is called into the game, enable the mod, restart your game, and you're done
There was sorta-kinda a 'genre' that predates Factorio, made up largely of Zachtronics games, styled as 'games for engineers'. They tend to be more puzzle-based rather than open-ended, but old flash games like the Codex of Alchemical Engineering (since remade, polished, and improved upon as Magnum Opus) involved smashing bits together to make more complicated bits in increasingly complex production chains, etc. I played me a whole lot of SpaceChem back in the day.
I discovered Factory-like from Minecraft way a fair bit before Factorio, with mods like Industrial Craft, Buildcraft etc... and even mods adding Conveyor Belts and Pipes. I would not put Factorio as the source for the Factory genre, I am sure there are many examples that inspired those mods in the first place.
1st day of mindustry: "Sees all of the building" how the heck I'm going to do this 1st year of mindustry: "Intense Calculations" "Complex buildings" "And learning the logic" And all hail the *ROUTER*

Mindustry is my favorite of all factorio games because: - editor maps - Mods unlimited (except if you have potato phone) - Unlimited Campaign with mods (in V7, it’s possible) - PvP - you can even invite players in the campaign in very difficult sectors Edit: I forgot that it’s also ✨FREE✨ (In PC and android, but not for IOS) Also -in V7 (August 9 2022) an Alpha update that includes 2 PLANETS has release. It gets even better and better everyday
Who's ready for the mod "project unity" which changes every single thing in mindustry and makes it 100× better *literally* Not done though but I'm waitin for it
In case anyone is holding off on satisfactory because they think early access means it feels incomplete, it very much already feels like a full game. The only real sign of early access is that there's no story, and you won't even realize that with the focus on your production lines.
Mindustry consumed my soul for a solid year last year, and I just got back into it excited for the next update. I love how it is constantly growing and evolving. SatisFactory looks great too. I see you've got other videos on logistics/resource management games so I think I'm gonna go ahead and subscribe. Thanks!
Tip for Mindustry: if you have two exits from enemy spawn for enemies to go, completely block one of entrances with few thousand blocks because A.I works that they go where are less blocks, or no blocks. So you can just build very long maze with exit and put billion turrets.
Yeah, I think it's a tad unfair to claim that these games were solely based off of Factorio. While a game like Mindustry may share conveyor belts and NPC attack waves, I don't think it's enough to call it a clone.
I agree mindustry is not a clone plus Factorio=absolute disgustingness and people that assume mindustry is a Factorio clone are also absolute disgustingness and idiotic
Started with Shapez, used to get mad watching let's plays and people saying "oh, wrong hot key, I'm used to Factorio", or stuff like "in Factorio you can.. blah blah". I'd be like "well this isn't Factorio, if you love it so much, go play that". Well... I eventually had to go see what all the hype was about, now I'm closing in on 500hrs. Shapez still holds a special place, I adore the wires mode. Making a "Make Anything Machine" was a really fun puzzle. Also, that shape is a Jelly Fish.
Mindustry is actually new now mindustry now makes it so when you beat all the waves of a sector you capture it and will be yours forever make sure to knock out the enemy bases if there are ones near the sector (there’s even story now)
@@darkmoon556 The mining drones from v5 are not totally gone, there are new mining drones called "Mono"s and they are produced by the air factory in v6 and v7. A lot of the other support/green units can mine as well, and you can use the logic processor to make them act like mining drones.
Dyson Sphere Project also looks to be shaping up nicely. Idk if I’d prefer it to Factorio, but it’s cool enough. It is in early access as of right now though, so don’t get too excited for a full product just yet.
Unpopular Mindustry opinion: Router chains are actually OK in early game when refill speed does not matter. They only become a problem in late-game, and if you launch before late-game you're fine.
I still think optimizing conveyors is still better because you're both saving resources and not wasting your output when you eventually switch to titanium conveyors.
This year I have gotten unhealthy obsessed with Shapez. I can say it is a really fun game. I don’t really like games that get stressful with combat or a limited amount of resources so this game was the best. I can say it gets really addicting once you get past the first levels. The game is worth it if you like to create factories that go to other factories that go to other factories and so on. Right now in the game I have 20 different factories just to make one shape! I do recommend the game to all.
2:15 it will suck you in and won’t let you go, next thing you know it’s 3 days later, you missed work, didn’t eat, or go to the bathroom and your only 1% thru the game 😂😅
I'm not sure if this is common for people like me, but I have actually owned and played all the games mentioned in this video, so I kinda wanna give my opinion. - Factorio factorio is one of those games that I have always been obsessed with but I never actually got to buy it, so when I remembered this classic from my childhood it just had to be the next game I buy, and to this day I don't regret my decision at all. Being a very fun game to sink your time into and also a great game for exploding tons of enemies with your automatic grenade factory, the only real downside to it is that for more casual players it could be a bit overwhelming and not so fun to play if you're not into the combat being basically forced upon you. After all a great game if you're looking for a more complicated and thurough factory game. - Satisfactory what can I say, this is probably the best factory game I have ever played. It has awesome grafics, sound design, research mechanics, factory building, actually some really creative and allowing building for all your architectual needs. It is basically a 1up to the games it took inspiration from, which doesn't mean that the other games like factorio haven't done certain things better, what I'm saying is that with a bit more work and the game coming out of early access, this is and is always going to be a masterpiece in the industry by coffee stain If you love being satisfied by nicely lined up factories and also love the though of exploring an alien planet, then this game is worth every penny. - Mindustry even with my limited experience with this game I can tell that it's a treat to anyone who loves tower defense and factory building. I could find myself coming up with creative sollutions to problems I would never think I'd have to face in a game like this. It has a very unique idea and a great execution, I think it's really underappreciated and deserves more love than it gets. I'm not too much into the combat focused games but I still very much enjoyed it and would recommend at the very least trying out the itch.io version. overall, an awesome game with an awesome idea and a really cool artstyle as well. - Shapez.io now, this game may seem a little barebones at first, but it is a favourite of mine and if you give it a try you'll soon understand why. Having a very simple idea while having the game be so much fun to play, this game can get really fun, really fast. At the start I saw it through a youtube video and it really grew on me when I tried out the browser version. I bought it as soon as I could just so I could experience the full version for myself. If I'm going to be honest it did get a bit boring later on but I managed to keep myself going with just starting another save and trying different methods of planning out my factory and after all, the game gets really frequent updates from (I think) the one passionate developer that works on this game and it also has a puzzle DLC so now you have a whole plethera of things you can use to motivate yourself to play. Great game to play for relaxation on your free time. And that probably concludes this. I just want to say that this is all my opinion and if you disagree you can CALMLY respond and propose your opinions and experiences with any of these games. Also props to whoever actually reads this, I apreciate you very much and also thanks to Ingeniouseclown for making this very entertaining video, so entertaining in fact, that I wasted at least an hour on this comment. :)
Dyson Sphere Program is a REALLY good factory game. Its primary feature is, well Dyson Spheres. You can design dyson spheres, or copy blueprints from the internet, and then construct them by launching rockets and shooting railguns at them! It's factories on a galactic scale.
This! DSP is more similar to factorio than the games in this video. Although the 3D-ness & Dyson sphere design really adds another level of gameplay too
Love my factorio, artillery is supremely satisfying, after defending wave after wave and constantly stressing, finally getting artillery and just fuckin bombing biters from half a mile away and watching the shell slowly travel and just gib ten worms is just... chefs kiss. But Mindustry is also a super addicting game. I think it would be interesting to have a 2D factory builder where the goal is to get to the core of alien planets, constantly digging down, needing new tech to get deeper and unlocking new upgrades like thermal power but also constantly having to expand towards the top to get more low tier material to continue the grind
Nice video, didn't know about shapes.io before now. My personal somewhat factorio like game ranking would be: 1. Factorio 2. Factory Town (fantasy setting and 3D make this pretty interesting also I kind of like not having an avatar to control, not needing to walk around the map gives just building stuff more focus) 3. Mindustry 4. Production Line (about building a car factory, surprisingly enjoyable) 5. Automachef (about automated cooking, was surprised by how well suited the theme of cooking stuff is to automation and it's optimization, food spoilage and rush hours in particular make things pretty neat) 6. Autonauts (all about programming bots instead of using conveyor belts or such) 7. Blueprint Tycoon (you build a town but each production building has a blueprint that would have been like a mini Zachtronics game puzzle if they were implemented slightly differently but as is I found the way it works too simple) 8. Some Ludum Dare game from at least a year ago that I forgot the name of (it was about magic in some form) 9. Survival Vacancy (Terraria like, not super interesting to me and pretty far from finished) 10. Automation Empire (Would be awesome if it didn't have ton of stupid limitations, just one example would be that pipes used to deliver resources to nearby structures connect only in a straight line and come only in lengths of 1 and 3 which means lots of time spent figuring out the exact spacing your structures should have and/or doing some silly workarounds just to get resources across a 2 or 4 tile gap) Anyway when Satisfactorio first came out I quickly noted that my PC probably can't run it very well but it's performance might have been optimized since then so maybe I should look into it again.
@@qzump7989 Haven't tried modding it, tried Minecraft out when I noted that it's TIGSource thread was pretty popular but at the time wasn't that interested since it just seemed like a needlessly cumbersome way to make 3D maps(at least compared to using GTKRadiant to make Tremulous maps like I was doing at the time).
Automation Empire could be such a great game if only there would be more effort. It now feels pretty abandoned. Still has the most appealing aesthetics to me.
@@qzump7989 Cool, looking at those I'm reminded that I somewhat recently played and liked FortressCraft Evolved(and Vintage Story though that's not very factorio like) which is probably pretty similar to those mods. Anyway some other factorio like games I've played since my first comment are * Dream Engines Nomad Cities a cool game kind of similar to Warptorio mod(also reminds me of Eggoria which is a lovely nomadic city builder) * Satisfactory, it was nice and worked decently on my old PC. * Dyson Sphere Program which I played for quite a while despite getting abysmal FPS, liked how jetpack worked in that so much that decided to add a jetpack mod to Factorio though obviously that wasn't quite the same thing. * ReFactory, still early in Early Access so didn't play much but it's seemingly trying to feel less exploitative with more focus on green energy and such and in general trying to be more appealing to people who would be passionate about that. * InfraSpace, much more of a city builder, I feel like most of my time was spent building and adjusting roads but it's still pretty factorio like overall.
Mindustry has come a long way since this video, and im willing to say it is possibly better than factorio, not only in content and gameplay, but in convenience and ease of access. and there are mods. That's fun. Oh, did I mention it's free?
Shapezio is a game I've put more time then I should have. I have games that barely run over a few frames because of the factories I've made. I love it.
I highly recommend Mindustry even now, the game is still zero on itch and app store and newly updated game is massive and mods just make it better. Happy constructing you factory one any of these games.
Factorio:Noo you can't just wait for stuff to build before constructing it Satisfactory:Noo you can't just make stuff without clicking it forever to make lots of resources Mindustry:Haha construction goes brrr, but sometimes grrr, but we have polys and megas to help us out
What? No love for Autonauts? It has all of the factory and programming of Factorio without any enemies to get in your way--at least for now; they are adding a survival mode. ...AND IT IS SO DARNED CUTE!!!
I'd like a 2D factorio with way more exploration and some impactful decisions. For instance a snowy biome could have no enemies, but once you get pollution it melts snow which floods your base and also invites enemies. Or you could have desert where you need water to cool down your factory. And the incentive to go there is that these are the only places where specific resources are common, you can of course tap into tiny patches in safe areas but you will feel how you starve for resources. If the game invited you to explore distant lands with diverse biomes, mechanics, risks and payoffs then it would be great. How about delinearizing gameplay? Maybe an alternate route to get something? How about more hostile fauna, maybe some infighting we can use thanks to careful wipe out of a few key nests? You know factorion, but on drugs. I didn’t really touch the mods that much, I got quickly overwhelmed by Pyandon’s, which is probably natural, but still I doubt there’s that level of mods out there. Anyway, anyone else get feelings factorio is just perfect base that needs more development?
Is practically all of the game in this video turn into one game impactful logistic, place to explore, enemies to fight practically mindustry or factorio on a lot of mods
shit, i've actually played all the games on this list lmao never found a list of "X games you should play" where i've played all (or even any) of them before. Cool. I do hope Mindustry can fix their wiki situation though, there's like 5 different wikis and it's fucking broken as hell.
I'm so glad mindustry on this list, It's changed a lot durring the time this video has been out but it's my favorite tower defence/real time strategy/factory game ive ever played. The updates are frequent, the main game is very fun especially with coop + it has pvp that you can play with friends which is my favorite part. It's definitely with checking out
oh, another nice game in the same 'factory builder' realm that started early access since this video came out is Dyson Sphere Program, wherein your goal is to create dyson spheres around various stars by setting up logistics networks between their planets. Due to how dyson spheres work with energy generation, it gets exponentially easier to add more to a sphere as it is built, and once you have one fully constructed it makes it immensely easy to build another
I used to play some of these all the time then I got a new phone and I forgot the name of the game, I never stopped looking for it and thanks to you my search has come to a end Much thanks
Factory Town absolutely deserves a slot here. It's the zen version and is absolutely superb, especially considering it started off as a one man project and is one of the greatest examples of a quality early access title. :)
What made me love factorio as long as the tutorial lasted, and then get bored as soon as I entered the open world because I lacked an extrinsic motivation, might be just what mindustry has
Actually started with Satisfactory, and only recently tried Factorio. There's something about Factorio that just doesn't quite hit the same notes for me though. I think it has a lot to do with the fact Satisfactory focuses not just on the factory, but on the world, exploration and building. There's so much more room for player expression in Satisfactory as well. My factory is now a huge structure with some thought to outward aesthetic design, even if on the inside it's sometimes still a mess of conveyor belt spaghetti monster.
Yeah its kinda hard to understand why mindustry would be the best if these 3. But it is. At least for me. You have to play for a stupidly long time to fully understand it. To know that you have created schematics that you couldnt possibly explain to very many people. That only a select few can even fathon how you make every single resource from scrap. Or how you create power seemingly out of thin air. Even people who have played for a hundred ours are still in their beginning stages. THEEEEN, you get to multiplayer. Where nothing you learned as of tactics or space management applies. Where itll only take the opponent a few minutes to find out how to completely eradicate you. Even though you have 5 layers of thorium walls 2 layers of mend projectors and an american shit ton of foreshadows. Love this game and i will play it until the very very bitter end
you should count factory town in, that game has nice features like: vertical building, renewability (you can make your own resource sources later on) also it has no enemies, chill : D. the only downside is it becomes way too complex when it comes to vertical building
No, I just didn't have the picture in front of me when I was talking about it so I just said a color I *thought* it was. I knew when I was editing that people would ask that question haha
While Satisfactory is in some ways a more chill game than Factorio, it does provide slightly other type of challenges and the size of the factory can be felt more. A relatively new entry to this genre is "Learning Factory" with a little bit different approach, and a big huge shout out for Dyson Sphere Program. I love this Interstellar logistics game almost more than Factorio and Satisfactory. I don't know which one I like best, so to me it is a shared 1st place between Factorio, Satisfactory and DSP for now. Not mentioned games are also Early Access, but especially DSP has quite a high level of polish and quality comparable to Satisfactory EA. PS(edit) : I saw you covered both in separate videos. Great work! 😉
Yea lol V5 V6 completely overhauled the unit system, resprited and renamed most old units and added new things too, most notably tho it kinda made it a bit more complex.
Myself, I think TerraTech deserves an honorable mention. Granted, the game only has some elements of a factory game as most of the focus is on other things like exploration, building vehicles and completing missions and race tracks with them. While the factory elements are not as sophisticated, it actually does have some factory elements.
Also, I'm rather shocked that there was no mention of Fortresscraft Evolved. I mean, that's an open-world, exploration-based automation game seemingly inspired by Factorio (and Minecraft) with quite a few similarities.
After update 5 for Satisfactory the game has been much more refined along with the addition of a ton a new building parts, the game completely changed for myself and many others as a result. Coffee Stain also does not do road maps so every update is usually a surprise but they do show some content before updates come out but they leave out massive features and show those the day of the update launch.
I agree with this. Especially when they announ ced collisions for trains, where nobody expected completely derailed trains upon collision and have excellent physics on each wagon separately.
Correction: factorio man's objective is not to "escape the planet" or "get home". While the ship crashing wasn't part of the plan, he came to that planet on purpose. And that purpose is to strip it of all resources.
What I love about satisfactory is that it doesn't have any pollution mechanic, no renewable energy except geothermal because the company that the player character works for (and is probably owned by) just doesn't care and gives you nuclear bombs and a post car
Every time I fire up Satisfactory 200 hours of my life dissapear. Also map-wide conveyor stacks is the optimal way to transport resources! It requires the least amount of brainpower to design and it doubles as transportation! Slide jumping on T5 belts gives you some insane speed. Admittedly there was that one time when I passed through an area where the collision was really fucked up and fell through the floor multipple times, but it was worth it in the end because I didn't have to think.
These games are all incredible. Shapez.IO is one of my favorites for sure. Getting into Mindustry again now. Satisfactory is so beautiful too, love the atmosphere.
Fun fact: if you get the space exploration mod for factorio, you’ll get an exploration side to the game, as you scour through asteroid belts, orbits, star systems and even the interstellar void
Factorio is one of the few games that I needed to see a gameplay video for 30 seconds without knowing absolutely anything about it to go purchase straight away without even worrying about its price, so much was the interest it sparked. I think the only other game that did that to me ever was Minecraft.
When I first researched oil in Satisfactory, I built a several kilometers long bridge over a big lake-filled forest, because I expected the path on the ground to go past something dangerous. I don't know if I was right, but at least I found lots of power slugs on trees.
There's one thing about Factorio- it's that Anuken (developer) knew about Factorio only after 2 years of development of game. I was looking for development of this game since it started. (Sorry for bad English)
Not only is Shapez a good game, it has an amazing sound track. I have never cared about sound tracks ever before hearing this one. I tried Mindustry on my phone and had no idea what I was doing, so I deleted it. Satisfactory looks difficult, yet beautiful. It's the only one I haven't tried yet.
This guy needs to remaster this video in the future. Because Factorio is getting a DLC. Mindustry is V7 now and Satisfactory is approaching release. Best part is he didn't go into modding in mindustry and factorio
1:40 "the entire world is a puzzle and you're there with your box of Legos trying to solve it." Never has this game been better summarized in a single sentence.
Mindustry's "mining anxiety" as he coined the term is something else. There will be times you focused on factorio based mechanics so much that the frontline will be breached and enemies will snap you out of factorio chill. Nowadays it works like mix of rimworld and factorio because you harvest fesources, invest in defenses, observe if you will be destroyed or not, move resources to different hexagonal seed generated part on the planet and repeat like until you conquered the whole planet. The only difference is that rimworld is more pawn based and mindustry is more turret based while factorio has more management dillemma while you actively try to defend your production lines
Oohhh, the good old V5 of Mindustry, now theres the V6,that includes better graphics, the way of attacking Is now a planet, that you have to conquer, new units, level 1 to 5 , level 1 unit Is basically a little unit nearly no health, dies quickly etc, but level 4,5 they are nearly indestructible titans
Satisfactory with mods is endlessly more fun. I have a wireless power plant that runs unattended across the map. I never have to worry about fighting the native fauna to get resources for my power plant. I don't have to hundreds of powerlines strung across the planet. I also use a mod which lets me have "underground" conveyor belts. Within my factory, I have so many things going on at once that two many conveyor belts would just get in the way. I don't recall where I found the mod launcher, but if you can find, get it as it makes the game sooooo much better.
ok a thing i did in mindustry which i thought was stupid but actually turned out to be a decent idea was "routers everywhere" i made a bunch of machines and shit and put routers everywhere because when every router is filled it will all act as a funnel into the core making the most efficient paths possible
Satisfactory may be unfinished but it's a game where you can put hundreds of hours into and never get bored, it actually gets overwhelming before you really get the grasp of building better advanced and cleaner factories
For those coming 2 years after this video, Mindustry has changed a lot, theres a second plsnet with a whole new tech tree. I hope anyone who is playing likes the game
Mindustry is AWESOME. The music is funky, The gameplay is good, They even keep their big versions of the game seperate just incase if someone doesn't like the newest one. And the fact that the enemy in the campaign almost feels like you're fighting another player. And multiplayer is so well done. THEY EVEN HAVE PROGRAMMING. you can make GAMES in mindustry. Literally. Some people learned programming from mindustry.
MINDUSTRY announcement: Units upgrades are now removed Units controllingment is now a thing Units rally squad is now a thing Ammunition is now a thing Theirs world edits And ofc theirs also Pvp, co-op, sandbox and more Theirs also mods Feel free to play the game Because it's getting better Since theirs now more new types of turrets, materials and units :D Feel free to try and go play the game If you don't like the game it's oky But don't hate it tho ._.
Factorio: Logic and combat based. A perfect balance is required to not lose your factory Mindustry: Production and tower defense combined Shapez: Simple to understand, infinite space and chill gameplay (fire ost) Satisfactory: Breaks into 3d, awesome visuals, barely any combat and lots of exploration
