LOVE the vintage watercolor look but don’t know how to achieve it easily? Try this fun and simple method using a wax resist (AKA candle stub or white wax crayon) and your Kuretake Graphite paints (or any other paints of course) and see how to create four different designs of nature themed bookmarks which will make lovely little gifts or favors this autumn.

Love the textures. Between the graphite and the wax I’ll have two layers of texture before I begin the primary design. A few flowers or abstract shapes, add the bits of shadow you showed, embellish with ink and suddenly I’ll have a very sophisticated vintage look without having to stress. Thank you!!

If you’re ordering pens, Diane, you might like to try a copper one. I love the white, black, gold contrasts, too, but I have found that copper really ‘snaps’ against a dark background, like perplexed red for example. I’m not as keen on the bronze, though. Depending where you put it, the silver is really magical … drifting off with midnight blue (or infant green). ❤

Bookmarks are always fun to make and I really enjoyed seeing the effect of the wax resist. After you introduced us to the graphite paint quite a while back, I purchased some and love them. As is the case at times, I forget what I have and need a reminder to pull them out, so thank you for the reminder. Those graphite colors are perfect for creating autumn art. Thanks for the glimpse of your peaceful farm. Your sweet dog and farm family seem happy and content as always.

Awesome book markers. Thank you so much for doing this video. I do have those graphite colors, now I know another way to use them. Using the candle is new to me but something I’ll also use in the future. Love your casual way of painting. That’s my best way also. I call it whimsical painting.

My first thought was "this reminds me of my weedy flower area" this time of year. Been gathering weedy bouquets for a watercolor, and this approach might be great especially for a background. I have a white candle somewhere. Maybe a small painting or skinny cards. I'm smiling now...no graphite pignents but think I can improvise. Thanks!

That's a great idea! Everyone appreciates a little bookmark, even if they don’t read, it’s nice to put on the fridge door, or with a few lines from a poem written on it makes a lovely message.

I've discovered people are re-reading books,in fact I've been loaned a wonderful book about Penzance and Tintagel,I was making such a fuss about not having any idea where to start with our King Arthur themed art exhibition ,coming up in November that a very kind friend loaned me this book, I'm sure it was just to shut me up, but it's such a lovely funny book that I'm going to buy it, the lady author was born in Helston and gives you an hilarious rendition of the flora dance and Terry Wogan , so I will make some more bookmarks and slip one into the book as a thank you, All the best Diane and thank you too ☺❤

Good old Terrry , the book Diane is called .. AROUND HELSTON & LIZARD with SHEILA TRACY ... one of our ladies grew up in Helston and she pointed out a man she knew as a child, a friend of her parents photographed in the book , he's long gone now but she said it gave her goosebumps to see him inside the book .. it cost me more than the £1.20 on the back of the book but worth the extra £7. haha , all the best thank you for the video xx

These are really lovely Diane and perfect little paintings for me right now, with my neck issues. I feel the need to do some painting, and so I’m super inspired by these! Btw, I feel your pain when it comes to trying to remember words. The harder I try to grasp it, the more ur eludes me🤦🏻‍♀️. Honestly, I am so impressed that you do these awesome tutorials for us and stay on track with a camera going! Some of my Bible journaling gals have asked for a video on some mixed media techniques and I’m not feeling very confident! I’m excited to work on these little designs tomorrow. On the whole I think it’s better to search for a word and keep the video completely authentic - we only edit out things like loud dog barking fits - to try to be as close to reality as possible, so I’m glad you appreciate that! These little paintings could easily be expanded to slightly larger pieces which could be mounted as gifts, couldn’t they. Hope your neck stops bothering you soon, sending love, Diane xxx

Fabulous, love the wax resist I can’t wait to try it! I need a lot more practice painting petals and leaves with just brush strokes. I love my Fiscars trimmer it’s 12” x 12” and one of the best purchases I ever made, I used to trim with a ruler, self healing mat & a mat knife, now I am just too chicken to do it that way😅

I love these! I can't wait to get the brushes, I particularly love the long round. Thanks so much for the great tutorial! I really have enjoyed all my Kuretake especially the graphite, I use them quite often. After what you mentioned about the color toner for our laser jet being the price of the replacement toner, we have started doing our color prints for cards at FedEx Office. They are beautiful and we get 2 cards printed on each sheet for about .75 cents USD total.

these are so nice. I love the wax resist but rarely remember to use it! I do not own those paints but they look lovely. I have the Derwent graphite set but it is not as pigmented and all the colors are similar shades of gray. I will have to order the ones you use.

Great ideas for gifts, and using my graphite colours which I bought after seeing your video when you first used them. That video (which I refer to, to myself, as the lollipop video) has inspired a few greeting cards. You talked about people not liking the scratchy noise of a nib pen, rather perversely I love that sound! (I don't like fingernails down a blackboard so I'm not completely mad!) 😊
