I have only two tips to add to it. One, trust your tree, make choices based on what it's doing, not necessarily the "rules". We planted 5 more fruit trees during the lockdown, 4 of which I won't let fruit as they are still small and just getting settled. But one of them, a Magnus Summer Apple exploded, 3ft to 9ft in a single year. I am going to let it fully fruit this year to help slow it down. Trust the tree and make choices based on what it is doing. Second, know your climate, here in Melbourne, Australia, we have a warm Autumn and usually a mild start to winter, and yet still get 800-1000 chill hours. In the first month of winter, I still have stone fruit that is actively growing. Same with all my citrus. Knowing that you can make pruning decisions better, and also fertilising, I add fertiliser during Autumn because things will continue to grow up until July. (Mid winter)

The best advice for watering fruit trees regardless of age, is to water no more frequently than every two weeks as long as the watering completely soaks the root zone. Commercial orchards use that approach in the temperate northwest of the US for all their trees except nectarines, which need even less water.

@joggabonkers6380

It depends on what type of root system that is used for the tree. Some of the newer fruit trees will need support during their whole life time. If you dont want your tree to grow too large keeping fruit stops or stuns growth. I typically plant fruit with weak roots B-9 and M-9. They dont grow to large, they fruit early and take up less space. Typically you plant a meter apart, use some poles and wire to support trees and branches. Even on a 3 year old tree you can get nice harvests, like 3-4 kgs, and the apples that the tree produces is top quality. Also when you water a young tree, water properly like 20-40 Litres per tree, as the roots will grow towards the moisture and you ideally dont want the roots to grow upwards but downwards.

Thanks for a good video. And thanks for not going on and on about "organic". Even when it's true, it is trendy, faddish talk well before now. I think tree pruners have to decide which pruning theory they subscribe to. For my most recent apple tree I let it grow wild for a year first, the idea being, that since food is made in the leaves, it encouraged tree growth and root growth. In the second year I did the more severe pruning for structure. Many people have never heard of temporary branches that are left on the tree, but will come off in the future. So you need to have a good idea of the final form of the tree. And what about mulch around the tree? Killing the excess of grass cuts back on the tree's efforts to get moisture and nutrients. Pick a good sensible pruning program, study it and stick with it.
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 6 лет назад
Thanks Michael! I agree!
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 6 лет назад
Thanks Michael, I agree. For me a pruning program is an organizational system just to help you have clear goals and to achieve those goals. As for organic, I think it's great when it can be achieved. And yet I'll also buy fruit from local growers who can't necessarily achieve organic certification but who sell a good product and who are careful and thoughtful about their spraying program. It's not easy to grow fruit trees and growing thousands of them to feed the public is even harder. Glad you enjoyed my video! Happy growing!

Thanks so much for your videos. This is the first one I've watched, but I plan to watch many more. I planted 12 fruit trees over the past five years, and am now realizing I lack the knowledge to keep them healthy. My peach trees lost several large branches, due to the weight of the fruit. I'm hoping to find some information about how to repair damage as well as what to do about half-broken branches.

@bobbrawley2612
@bobbrawley2612 5 лет назад
Well that's one way to look at secret number three . Another way is to allow the fruit to develop to slow the vigor down . Slow the rate of growth of the laterals so that the energy [ carbohydrates ] will be directed in fruit bud or spur development .. I have had problems in the branches growing to much In length with too much blind wood from the base of the lateral to the terminal end . This year I'm going to let the fruit form to encourage more fruit budding rather than trunk and branch height and length
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 5 лет назад
Try it for sure! Just make sure that those branches are strong enough to support that harvest. What I do instead to slow down growth is a) choose my root stock carefully so it will keep the tree small and b) prune carefully in the summer rather than the winter to slow growth. Here's my article on winter vs. Summer pruning: orchardpeople.com/when-to-prune-fruit-trees/
@joggabonkers6380
@joggabonkers6380 3 года назад
Absolutely the best way of doing it! WHen pruning to not tip all branches. Rather remove branches in full and keep some longer horisontal ones. Apples can be both tip bearing and bud bearing. Younger trees tend to be more tip bearing, whereas older become more spur bearing. (Some varieties tip bear more others are more bud bearing, but most varieties will do both. If a branch isnt horisontal keep a few fruit and as the apples grow support the branch. Next year it will have the desired angle.

What a great question Duc! I wrote a blog to answer it! I bought Mayer Lemon Tree from Costco last year. It might have come to me when it was 2-3 years old. Should I remove small fruits and not let it bear any this year?
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 4 года назад
Hi Susan, good question! If you Meyer Lemon tree is in a pot and remaining in the pot, then you do not have to remove the baby fruit. We do this when we are planting a tree in the ground, because the roots need lots of energy to settle into their new environment. But if you are leaving your tree in the pot, then it can just continue doing what it is doing. It isn't experiencing the stress of being moved. Enjoy your tree!

I asked a commerical orchardist what they did for their young apple trees and he said first thing we remove all fruit for the first 3 years of the trees growth. I believe a minimun of 2 is okay but it's all about growing structure for the tree in later years for supporting the heavy fruit.
@Rinsuki
@Rinsuki 5 лет назад
Yes. I tell people all the time that it is worth the wait until the tree is at least three years old to let them bear depending on variety. Fruiting too much can mess up the tree's structure or even kill it. Some will fruit themselves to death so this is why we intervene.
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 5 лет назад
Yes, it's something we will do probably for the rest of the tree's life. Even when we allow the tree to fruit, we need to make sure it doesn't have more than it can support. That's why to me, correct pruning is so important. That way I can keep my tree compact so I can reach all the branches to thin (and prune, harvest and spray!)
@joggabonkers6380
@joggabonkers6380 3 года назад
Remember a commercial orchard normally plants whips. Most people buy potted trees. A whip is a one year old tree, whereas the tree you buy in the orchard is normally 2-3 years old. If it has several varieties on one tre, it is three years old. For most people this means that the first year you plant (the tree is 2-3 years old), you should remove the fruit, or let the tree keep 1-3 for tasting, depending on the vigour. The year after you could normally keep fruit. (This is for B-9, M-9) varieties. For larger rootstock varieties, they normally don't flower that young.

What can you do about white aphids and snow like substance on guava leaves? we put on neem oil with soap and it did not work, two bottles worth.
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 5 лет назад
Interesting question. The best solution is to get beneficial insects to do the work for you. Not sure where you live but you need some sort of pollinator garden nearby that will attract beneficials, like ladybirds/ladybeetles that will gobble up the aphids when they come by. That's a longer term solution but will serve you well. Next I'd try washing them off with a hose. Insecticidal soap, used daily for 5 or so day should dehydrate and kill them. But there's a few other things to think about. What is the general health of the plant? Insects LOVE weaker plants that haven't been fed and pruned properly. They're like bullies in the playground who pick on the vulnerable kids. So have a look at the total care you can offer the tree. Hope this helps! Susan

Hi 😄 do you have a tutorial for pruning apples , persimmons , avocados, cherries , nectarines, peaches , guavas, and or cherimoyas ? I would imagine the pruning approaches are similar . For instance , would it be okay to prune back to the 3rd bud for stronger branches ? I also heard that inserting spacers to bend vertical branches to 75-90 degrees is good for making stronger better fruit bearing branches. Also , when you say to remove fruits the first two years would it be okay to just remove the flowers before the fruits even appear ? Thanks so much for the clarification !
@Orchardpeople
@Orchardpeople 5 лет назад
These are all great questions! I'll answer them in order. Yes I do have an online course in fruit tree care and it's relelvant for apples, cherries nectarines and peaches. It teaches pruning, fertility management, pest and disease prevention and more. It's at www.orchardpeople.com/workshops. As for your second question. Pruning is VERY important but the strategy isn't just to head back branches but also to selectively remove entire branches to create a strong, stable structure for your tree. I teach how in my course. Finally, some do remove the flowers rather than the fruits. But be very careful not to damage the buds. I suggest removing the baby fruit just because it's easier. With some trees you'll need a pair of tweezers to remove the blossoms! If you go to www.orchardpeople.com and sign up for my mailing list I'll tell you about upcoming podcasts, new blog posts and more. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Prune in summer/Spring and sparingly. Cherry trees do not like too much pruning. To restrict growth in height use a tight woven netting (primarily to prevent birds eating the fruit but with some weights it will also force the top sideways). Do this when the tree has the desired height. also you then continue to do this evey summer season to prevent the groth upwards. Some say that you can break undesired branches and keep then hanging on, not using cutters as the trees bleed easily. I just keep pruning to the minimum, mostly getting rid of diseased wood and take out as little as possible, mostly branches that fill the same space.

@@Orchardpeople Right-tow Across the street bordering a strip mall are 15 year old trees about 7 inches diameter Trunk. Not fruit trees. Their lowest limbs are 4 or five feet from the ground and yet their canopy is probably around 12 to 14 feet at the highest. Sort of looks like a wisteria trees I have seen in photos. . Those landscape trees are like maples . I guess . Very handsome small trees

@@chrisc9611 Pathogens/Diseases spread much easier... Apricots, Peaches, and Plums are most susceptible. Apples, Pears, Quince, Loquot, Roses not as worrisome, except if you have any fire blight. Fire Blight most commonly spreads through blooms during pollination, but open scars can be infected from rain splash

Hi @Chris C, yes I agree with @PM Beaham, fungal diseases spread like wildfire in rainy weather so it's best not to have any fresh, open wounds on your tree. And while pruning is beneficial, it does take a few days for new protective cells to form on the healing pruning cuts. So best to prune on a dry day.
